To the point Wondering if you'll have access to Wi-Fi on your next flight? Find out which airlines offer this service and under what conditions.

How In-Flight Wi-Fi Works

Providing an internet connection in a metal container travelling at 900 km/h at 10,000 meters altitude is quite the challenge!

In-flight Wi-Fi relies on two methods: ground-based cellular towers for short-haul flights and satellites for long-haul flights or flights over oceans. Aircraft must be equipped with a specialized antenna to capture the signal, which explains why not all airlines or aircraft are connected.

The main Wi-Fi providers for the aviation industry include Gogo, Viasat, and Thales. Depending on the provider used by the airline, prices, coverage, and speed will vary.

In-Flight Data Packages With FlexiRoam and GigSky

A new advancement has emerged in the world of virtual SIMs: satellite internet. Now, some eSIM providers offer internet packages that allow you to stay connected even in the air. These options can be interesting for accessing faster in-flight connections and are often cheaper than the Wi-Fi offered by the carrier.

For example, Flexiroam has partnered with about twenty airlines including Emirates, Lufthansa, and TAP Air Portugal, to offer fast connections on certain aircraft. GigSky also offers a similar service on the same airlines.
