To the point Until June 30, 2024, WestJet is offering its members up to 40% off the purchase of WestJet dollars.

WestJet Rewards is launching a special offer that will save you up to 40% on the purchase of WestJet dollars. To take advantage of this offer, you must be a member of the loyalty program and go to the WestJet dollars purchase page. This offer expires on June 30, 2024.

Details of the offer

WestJet Rewards members will receive a 40% discount when they purchase at least 2,500 WestJet dollars in a single transaction. Here’s a breakdown of the offer according to the number of dollars purchased:

  • 20% discount on purchases of $100 to $499 WestJet dollars
  • 25% discount on purchases of $500 to $999 WestJet dollars
  • 30% discount on purchases of $1,000 to $1,499 WestJet dollars
  • 35% discount on purchases of $1,500 to $2,499 WestJet dollars
  • 40% discount on purchases of $2,500 to $5,000 WestJet dollars

For example, buying 2,500 WestJet dollars will cost you $3,000 after the 40% discount:

You can purchase up to 5,000 WestJet dollars per calendar year to take advantage of this offer.

For your information, sales taxes are added to the purchase price if you pay with a Canadian address. Whereas with a U.S. address, there are no sales taxes.

Please note: Purchases are made via Points.com, a site external to WestJet. This will not count as a qualifying purchase from WestJet.

Is the offer worth it?

The WestJet Rewards program is easy to calculate: according to Milesopedia’s semi-annual estimate, 1 WestJet dollar is worth $1.

At the current price and with the 40% discount on the purchase price of WestJet dollars, each WestJet dollar costs you $1.20 before taxes. Unfortunately, this is not an attractive offer.

A better alternative would be to sign up for the WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard to get the welcome offer that will save you money on your next WestJet flight and the following benefits:

With the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard, you can earn up to $450 in WestJet Dollars as a welcome bonus:

  • 250 WestJet dollars upon your first purchase
  • 200 WestJet dollars when you spend $5,000 in the first three months

With the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard, you get a travel companion voucher redeemable for a round-trip flight at a reduced rate. And your purchases can bring you closer to achieving status with WestJet.

In addition, the primary cardholder and up to 8 guests receive complimentary first checked bag on WestJet flights.

With the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard, you earn 2% in WestJet dollars per dollar of purchase when you buy a WestJet flight or WestJet vacation package, and 1.5% in WestJet dollars on everyday purchases. If you travel regularly with WestJet, it’s like earning 1.5% to 2% cash back (including at Costco) to use towards the purchase of WestJet flights!

You’ll also benefit from a wide range of insurance plans: Out-of-Province/Country Emergency Medical Insurance, Travel Accident Insurance, Trip Interruption Insurance, Flight Delay and Emergency Purchases Insurance, Hotel/Motel Burglary Insurance, and Rental Vehicle Collision/Loss Damage Insurance.

Bottom Line

For the time being, this WestJet dollars promotion is not advantageous according to our calculations. If WestJet Rewards follows the same trend of offers related to the purchase of points and miles as other loyalty programs such as Aeroplan or Marriott Bonvoy, perhaps their next promotions of this kind will be worthwhile.

If you fly WestJet frequently, we recommend you apply for the WestJet RBC MasterCard or WestJet World Elite RBC MasterCard, to take advantage of welcome offers and enjoy a discounted next flight.
