American Airlines’ AAdvantage program has more than 100 million members worldwide. For Canadians, it remains one of the most attractive programs for accessing business-class and first-class flights with airlines in the oneworld alliance, often at very competitive mileage rates. In addition, fees and taxes on award tickets generally remain low.
In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about American Airlines’ AAdvantage programme: how to earn miles, the best ways to redeem them, elite status tiers, and tips for maximising the value of your miles. To compare other card options, check out our selection of the best credit cards in Canada.
The value of an AAdvantage mile varies depending on the type of redemption. On average, a mile is worth about 1.4 US cents (about 1.9 Canadian cents). However, on business-class flights with partner airlines, the value can climb well beyond 2 US cents per mile.
Conversely, some redemptions such as car rentals or hotel stays offer a value below 1 cent per mile. The rule is simple: prioritize flights to get the most out of your miles.
Canadians have several ways to earn AAdvantage miles, even if the options remain more limited than for other programs such as Aeroplan or British Airways Executive Club.
The main lever for Canadians is transferring RBC Avion Rewards points to AAdvantage. The ratio is 1,000 Avion points for 750 AAdvantage miles (i.e., 0.75:1). The minimum transfer is 5,000 Avion points.
This ratio is not the most advantageous compared to transfers to other programs. However, RBC sometimes offers transfer bonuses that improve the rate. Watch for these promotions, as they can make the transfer significantly more attractive.
The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card and RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card allow you to earn Avion points that can be transferred to AAdvantage.
Three hotel programs allow you to convert points into AAdvantage miles:
Transferring from World of Hyatt offers the best ratio. Keep these options in mind if you need to top up your balance for a specific booking.
Each cash-paid flight with American Airlines earns AAdvantage miles based on the amount spent (excluding government taxes). The base rate is 5 miles per US dollar spent. Basic Economy fares earn only 2 miles per dollar.
Members with elite status earn miles faster:
You also earn AAdvantage miles by crediting flights with partner airlines. The number of miles varies by airline and fare class. Partners include Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Qantas, and many others.
American Airlines sells AAdvantage miles directly to its members. The regular price is about 3.5 US cents per mile, but promotions offering up to 40% off appear regularly. Historically, the best price observed is around 2.45 US cents per mile.
Buying miles is mainly worthwhile if you have a specific booking in mind where the value per mile far exceeds the purchase cost. You can buy up to 150,000 miles per calendar year on the American Airlines website.
There is no co-branded AAdvantage credit card issued in Canada. However, Canadians who hold U.S. credit cards (via CitiBank or Barclays) can earn AAdvantage miles through welcome offers and everyday spending. Welcome offers range from 15,000 to 75,000 miles depending on the card.

Several other options exist, especially for U.S. residents:
The best use of your AAdvantage miles is booking flights. The program offers two award charts: one for American Airlines flights (dynamic pricing) and one for partner flights (fixed prices based on a zone chart).
Since April 2023, American Airlines has used dynamic pricing on its own flights. The published chart indicates minimum prices, but actual prices fluctuate based on demand, date, and route.
Actual prices can be significantly higher than these minimums. A Los Angeles-Paris business class flight can range from 89,000 to 400,000 miles depending on the date. However, prices can also drop below the published minimums: long-haul flights to South America have been observed at only 55,000 miles in business class.
This is where the AAdvantage program shines most. Partner flights follow a fixed-price zone chart, with no dynamic pricing. If you find availability, the mileage price matches the chart.
Taxes and additional fees generally remain very low on partner bookings. For example, a Tokyo–San Francisco Japan Airlines first-class flight costs 80,000 miles + about US$50 in taxes.
The AAdvantage program offers several outstanding deals, especially on partner flights in premium cabins.
Qatar Airways’ QSuite is considered one of the best business-class products in the world. A one-way North America–Doha flight costs 70,000 AAdvantage miles in business class. If you continue to the Indian subcontinent (e.g., Maldives, India, Sri Lanka) on the same booking, the price remains 70,000 miles because the final destination is in the same zone.
For Africa via Doha, plan on 75,000 miles each way in business class, still on QSuites.
A one-way flight to Japan in Japan Airlines first class costs only 80,000 miles. This is one of the lowest prices in the world for a long-haul first-class product. Additional taxes are minimal.
Starting in 2025, Etihad will operate its A380 with First Apartments between Toronto Pearson and Abu Dhabi. This ultra-premium product can be booked with AAdvantage miles via the partner chart. It is one of the most accessible first-class products for Canadian travellers.
The AAdvantage zone chart allows you to continue your trip within the same zone with no additional miles. Some examples:
For French Polynesia, Air Tahiti Nui in business class costs 80,000 miles + US$5.60 in taxes each way. A rare and affordable mileage option for a hard-to-reach destination.
You can use your AAdvantage miles to upgrade a cash-paid ticket to the next cabin on American Airlines, British Airways, and Iberia flights. Basic Economy tickets and award tickets are not eligible.
A few examples of upgrade costs on American Airlines:
Even if you do not plan to book with AAdvantage miles, American Airlines’ search tool is the best on the market for finding oneworld availability. You can search a full month at a glance, without even creating an account.
On aa.com, select “Redeem miles,” enter your itinerary, and click the calendar icon. Filter by “Nonstop only” and “Business/First” to quickly spot dates with premium-cabin availability.
AAdvantage offers a free hold on award tickets:
This feature is very useful if you need to transfer RBC Avion points or other currencies to your AAdvantage account before finalizing the booking.
American Airlines does not charge any fees to cancel or change an AAdvantage award ticket before the departure of the first flight. Your miles are redeposited into your account. This is one of the most generous policies in the industry.
The AAdvantage program has four main elite status tiers. You reach them by earning Loyalty Points between March 1 and the last day of February of the following year.
Loyalty Points come from cash-paid flights with American Airlines and its partners, as well as spending on co-branded AAdvantage credit cards (U.S. cards only). Award tickets do not generate Loyalty Points.
Baggage and seat benefits apply to the elite member and up to 8 passengers on the same reservation.
In addition to status tiers, American Airlines offers rewards at each Loyalty Points milestone reached. The first milestone starts at 15,000 points (boarding group 5 + one reward choice). Higher milestones (60,000, 100,000, 175,000, 250,000 points and beyond) unlock benefits such as Hyatt status, systemwide upgrades, travel credits, and bonus miles.
After one million actual miles flown with American Airlines and its partners, you receive lifetime Gold status + 35,000 bonus miles. Two million miles grants lifetime Platinum status. Beyond that, each additional million adds 4 systemwide upgrades per year.
Concierge Key is an invitation-only status reserved for the biggest spenders (generally US$50,000+ per year). It offers Admirals Club access, priority upgrades, a dedicated phone number, and World of Hyatt Globalist status.
AAdvantage provides access to an extensive network of partner airlines, mainly through the oneworld alliance.
The 14 oneworld members with which you can earn and redeem AAdvantage miles:
Several airlines outside oneworld are also AAdvantage partners:
The level of integration varies: some partners allow both earning and redeeming, others only one or the other.
Although flights offer the best value, AAdvantage offers other redemption options.
If you want regular access to Admirals Club lounges, the Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard (US$595/year, U.S. card) includes complimentary membership.
AAdvantage miles expire after 24 months of inactivity. Any earning or redemption activity resets the clock. A simple purchase via the eShopping portal or a points transfer is enough to keep your account active.
American Airlines’ AAdvantage program is a powerful tool for Canadians looking for discounted premium-cabin flights using miles. Its key strengths: a fixed-price partner chart with competitive rates, low taxes and fees, free cancellations, and one of the industry’s best oneworld availability search tools.
Earning miles remains the main challenge for Canadians, with RBC Avion Rewards transfers as the only bank transfer option. Watch for transfer and mile-purchase promotions to maximize your balance. Then, target partner redemptions in business or first class to get the best value.
