To the point Service has been discontinued since May 21, 2024, and is not scheduled to resume until September 2024 for Amtrak's Adirondack train between Montreal and New York City.

Update June 7, 2024 Amtrak took the decision to suspend the service between Montreal and New York since May 20 for maintenance work on the rails to improve service reliability. The train had to reduce speed due to excessive temperatures on the tracks between Rouses Point and Montreal, causing delays.

According to the Adirondack Explorer, Amtrak customer service has informed its ticketed passengers for this summer that the train is scheduled to resume on September 9, 2024, north of Saratoga Springs.

Those wishing to travel this long but splendid route can book an Adirondack train ticket on the Amtrak website.

Bookings are available from April 3, 2023 from New York to Montreal and from Montreal to New York on April 4, 2023.

One of the world’s most dazzling train experiences was available in economy class. The price of a one-way train ticket from Montreal to New York ranged from $70 USD to $102 USD.

Adirondack Train Features

The route is 613 kilometers long and the train stops at 17 stations. Before suspending operations for three years due to the pandemic, it carried approximately 120,000 passengers per year. Small pets are allowed and seats are not reserved.

Food service is available for a fee with the Café service, which includes a choice of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. But if the train is crowded, we recommend that you buy your meals before boarding, in case the Café runs out of certain items.

It takes 11h05 to travel from Montreal to New York City (Pennsylvania Station or Penn Station), then 11h35 the other way.

How to book an Amtrak Adirondack train ticket

Update June 7, 2024: The following information is for information purposes only to show the process when the train is in operation. Service is scheduled to resume on September 9, 2024, when maintenance work is completed.

Reservations must be made through the Amtrak website or mobile app, which is available in both English and French. Another option is to call for reservations at 1-800-USA-RAIL.

For the moment, the Via Rail site refers us to the Amtrak site for booking trips.

*It is recommended to add one to two additional hours, due to the border stop and the reduced speed of the train north of Albany.

The Value Economy ticket costs $70 USD and includes some refund options and can be changed at no charge.

While the Flexible Economy ticket costs $102 USD and allows for 100% refund prior to departure, with no cancellation or change fees.
