Air Canada has taken another step towards improving the passenger experience by becoming the launch customer for the Airbus Airspace cabin on its A220 fleet. Scheduled for introduction in early 2026, this innovation promises to significantly increase the amount of storage space available to passengers.
15% More Storage Capacity
The main innovation is the new XL overhead bins, which will offer 15% more space for cabin baggage. This enhancement will ensure smoother boarding and a better overall passenger experience.
A Complete Redesign of the Cabin
In addition to the overhead bins, Air Canada is introducing several other enhancements:
- New ceiling design
- Optimized lighting system
- Redesigned in-flight entertainment system
- Improved seating configuration

These enhancements are part of a broader trend aimed at optimizing the passenger experience. The new overhead bins tackle a common issue: the shortage of space for carry-on luggage. For Aeroplan members and frequent travellers, this is great news that will make travelling with just a piece of carry-on luggage more convenient.
The A220: A Strategic Aircraft for Air Canada
The company currently operates 34 A220-300s, with a further 31 aircraft on order. These aircraft, assembled at Mirabel ( Quebec), already offer:
- The widest seats in their class
- Spacious corridors
- The largest portholes in their segment
Bottom Line
This announcement confirms Air Canada’s commitment to continuous improvement in customer service. The new XL overhead bins, combined with other Airspace cabin enhancements, promise an even more comfortable flying experience for passengers starting in 2026.
Earlier this year, Air Canada followed in the footsteps of other airlines with new fees for cabin baggage. Fortunately, it’s still possible to secure a free checked bag for yourself and up to 8 travel companions on the same Air Canada reservation by holding the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card.
