To the point To access the Internet on board a WestJet flight, here's how to get Wi-Fi and a tip for getting it for free.

For work or just to surf the Internet, it is possible to connect to the Internet on several WestJet flights.

TELUS is WestJet’s in-flight Internet provider. We also wrote about this in another post on the partnership between WestJet and TELUS to offer free in-flight Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi service is available on select flights in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Types of aircraft that offer Wi-Fi

The following WestJet aircrafts have Wi-Fi on board:

  • Boeing 737 MAX 8
  • Boeing 737-700 and Boeing 737-800
  • and the Boeing 787

When you make a reservation, you will notice the presence or absence of a Wi-Fi icon, which indicates whether the service is available.

To be sure, you can click on “Flight details“.

In the example above, this 6:50 a.m. flight operated in partnership with Delta Airlines does not have Wi-Fi.

However, we note that part of the 06:00 flight offers access to Wi-Fi. Looking at the details:

The De Havilland Dash8 Q400 is not in the list of aircraft providing Wi-Fi. So, there is no internet on board between Montreal and Toronto.

However, the Toronto to Orlando leg is flown with a Boeing 737-800, which offers Wi-Fi.

How to get access to Wi-Fi

Buy an in-flight access

WestJet Connect is the platform used for Internet access on board WestJet aircraft. Before your flight, you can also download the Westjet mobile application.

Wi-Fi internet access is available when the aircraft is in the air, at full cruising altitude. Then you must:

  • Open the “In Flight” tab on the WestJet application
  • Or go to the WestJet Connectwebsite
  • Or select the “WestJet Connect” Wi-Fi network on your mobile device

The price and payment options will be displayed for Internet access:

  • $ 11 for 90 minutes
  • $ 22 for the duration of the flight
  • $ 33 for 24 hours

The access is perfect for checking emails and simply browsing the internet.

However, the following actions are not compatible with onboard Wi-Fi:

  • Listen to movies, series or videos on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, etc
  • Make calls with FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp, etc.
  • Using text messaging
  • Download or update applications

Around December 2024, WestJet passengers will have access to the internet thanks to Starlink. This will be free to WestJet Rewards members and TELUS customers only.

They will be able to watch videos or play games on their devices. This new platform will be available towards the end of 2024, and will be progressively installed on the WestJet fleet until 2026.

For another free goodie on your flight, don’t forget the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard, which gives one free bag on WestJet-operated flights for the cardholder and up to 8 additional guests traveling on the same reservation.

Bottom Line

Thanks to the Wi-Fi on board the planes to check the last details of the trip or simply to let the kids play with the tablet.

There are many ways to get it and start (or end) a trip with WestJet!
