Our review
Unlike the other two National Bank travel rewards cards, the National Bank Platinum Mastercard does not require a minimum income.
With this exclusive welcome offer for Milesopedia readers, you can get up to 25,000 points and the first-year annual fee is waived for the primary cardholder.
Here’s how:
- 10,000 points after $2,500 in Card purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
- 5,000 points if $6,000 or more in net purchases are charged to the credit card within 12 months of account opening
- 10,000 points if you sign up for Credit Card Payment Protection for a minimum of 3 months
You can earn 2 points per dollar on grocery store and restaurant purchases, and 1.5 points per dollar on gas, electric vehicle recharges, recurring bills and À la Carte Travel. And since it’s a National Bank Mastercard credit card, you can use it at Costco.
In addition, you get premium insurance usually dedicated for high-end credit cards:
- 180-day Purchase protection in the event of theft or damage
- Possibility of tripling the manufacturer’s warranty (up to 2 additional years)
- Trip Cancellation Insurance
- Trip Interruption Insurance
- Out-of-province hospital insurance

Points earned on the 1st anniversary of account opening date
You will earn 5,000 reward points if you charge a net purchase amount of $6,000 to the credit card no later than 12 months after the account was opened.

Reward points and refund conditions
Net purchases: The net purchase volume is the amount of purchases charged to the account minus returned items and refunds. Annual fees, balance transfers, cash advances (including transactions that can be directly converted to cash, such as money orders, bank transfers, travellers cheques and gaming transactions), interest charges and any other fees or adjustments not considered purchases are not included in the calculation of net purchases.
Account in good standing: The account must be open and in good standing at the time when annual fees are refunded or reward points are applied.
Reward limit: There is a limit of one cashback amount per category (welcome points, points for signing up for credit card payment insurance, and points earned on the 1st anniversary of the account opening date) per credit card account and per client during the promotion, regardless of the number of cards linked to the account.
Change of eligible credit card If you have been enrolled in an eligible card during the Promotional Period and have changed eligible cards prior to the first anniversary of your account, you will be eligible to earn 1st anniversary points for the card that is active on that date, provided you meet the Promotional Requirements.
Other conditions
- The credit card is issued subject to credit approval by National Bank. Certain conditions apply.
- The promotion may not be combined with another promotion applicable to National Bank credit cards, nor is it retroactive.
- You must not be employed by us or by an entity in our group.
- The promotion may be modified or withdrawn without notice.
*Grocery and Restaurant: The amount of points earned on grocery and restaurant purchases depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, regardless of the purchase category. Earn 2 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant expenses. You will earn 2 points for every dollar in eligible grocery and restaurant purchases until a total of $1,000 in gross monthly purchases is charged to the account. After that, you will earn 1.5 points per dollar in eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The total gross monthly amount is calculated based on your monthly billing period. Grocery purchases include any purchase made at a store that primarily sells food, i.e., grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, greengrocer or specialty food store. Ready-to-eat meal services and meal delivery services are eligible. This definition excludes purchases made at retail stores and big box stores whose core business is the sale of non-food items. Certain merchants may sell products and services that appear identical or similar to those sold by eligible merchants, or may be separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified in different categories by Mastercard. For purchases at other merchants, you will only earn regular rewards points. Restaurant purchases include purchases at a restaurant, fast food restaurant, bar, nightclub or pub.
Gas and Electric Vehicle Charging: To earn 1.5 points per dollar in purchases, you will need to purchase gas or an electrical vehicle charge from a service station or from certain big box stores. Certain merchants may sell products and services that appear identical or similar to those sold by eligible merchants, or may be separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified in different categories by Mastercard. For purchases at other merchants, you will only earn regular rewards points.
Recurring Bill: Recurring bill payments are defined as monthly or regular payments automatically charged by a merchant to your National Bank Platinum Mastercard credit card. Not all merchants offer recurring bill payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Certain payments therefore may not entitle you to earn more points.
Travel À laCarte: To earn 1.5 points per dollar in purchases, you must make your eligible purchases via the À la carte TravelTM Agency section of our À la carte RewardsTM site.
Other purchasesFor example, if each month you charge $400 in groceries, $200 in gas, $100 in recurring bill payments and $150 in other purchases to your card, your $850 in purchases will earn you 1,350 points, as follows: 800 points for grocery purchases (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, i.e., under $1,000), 300 points for gas purchases, 150 points for recurring bill payments and 100 points for other purchases.
