Aeroplan Family Sharing: suspension of account creation

To the point The creation of new Aeroplan Family Sharing accounts is temporarily suspended due to service misuse issues.

Those wishing to create a family sharing account with their Aeroplan points will have to wait, as the creation of new accounts for this functionality has been temporarily suspended by Aeroplan. Here is the message we received from Air Canada:

We wanted to let you know that due to a spike in misuse related to Family Sharing we’ve suspended the ability to create new Family Sharing accounts, including by telephone with an Aeroplan representative. This is temporary and won’t affect existing Family Sharing accounts – including the ability to add and remove members.

We know how important this feature is for our members, so rather than making knee-jerk changes, we’re taking the time to address this the right way. This may take several weeks, but our goal is to restore the ability to create new Family Sharing accounts as soon as possible

We don’t have any more details about the misuse linked to family sharing, but it’s easy to imagine that fraud attempts are responsible for this service interruption.

The good news is that existing family sharing users can continue to use this feature without fear. If you were planning to collect your points with family or friends, you’ll have to wait a little longer.

That said, there’s nothing stopping you from continuing to accumulate Aeroplan points, by signing up for the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, which offers a generous welcome bonus, for example, or by taking advantage of this limited-time offer from Apple.ca!

What’s more, each Aeroplan Member can book his or her own ticket and then ask Customer Service to link the bookings together.
