Since 2018, I’ve explored several credit card offers marketed by banking institutions and discovered my consumer profile. I had never been interested in what is called financial literacy. Happy to pay by cash or debit, loyal to my one credit card that I almost never used, I was the ultimate acquired customer.
And while I remain a moderate customer, happy with four or five credit cards in my wallet, I have developed a knack for picking the right ones. Some I’ll keep for the long term, while others will have to work to get to keep me as a customer. There are so many choices!
But I always pay my bills monthly and I have never paid interest.
My credit card needs
Here is the exercise that allowed me to choose the right World Elite Mastercard based on my needs:
I wanted a Mastercard because it is accepted everywhere (including Costco)
I met the criteria to apply for a World Elite at the time, which is no longer the case since my retirement (so it will be a card that I keep on the long-term).
I was looking for a card that offered excellent coverage for both purchases and travel.
I wanted benefits to enhance my travel experience: for years, I thought airport lounges were strictly for business customers.
After filtering through the offers with milesopedia’s credit card comparator, I made a chart of what I considered to be the best World Elite Mastercard credit cards FOR ME. An uncomplicated chart!
It’s a shame that some merchants still believe that American Express cards have higher interchange fees than Mastercard and Visa, especially World Elite and Visa Infinite, and that’s why they refuse it in their stores. But times are changing. American Express credit cards are increasingly accepted (e.g. the gradual evolution of IGA).

The American Express Cobalt® Card is the best credit card from American Express, whether you want points for travel or cash back.
American Express Cobalt® Card welcome offer
The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer we value at $255.
Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.
You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.
You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:
Here is what the card gives you, starting with the benefits cardholders use most.
5X points on eligible eats and drinks in Canada: groceries, restaurants and bars, home food delivery and convenience stores. A spend cap applies.
3X points on eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada.
2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.
1X point per dollar on everything else, with no category restrictions.
Points that hold the same value either way: 1,000 points = $10 as a statement credit, or a 1:1 transfer to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
Front Of The Line® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.
The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers four kinds of merchants:
Groceries: Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, Safeway, Whole Foods.
Restaurants and bars: sit-down meals, takeout and drinks.
Home food delivery.
Convenience stores: Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven.
The 2X rate covers gas stations such as Esso, Shell and Petro-Canada, along with public transit and ride sharing.
With the American Express Cobalt® Card, you earn between 1 and 5 points per dollar:

That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.
The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.
Travel insurance
Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.
Rental car insurance
Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.
Mobile device insurance
Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.
Purchase protection and extended warranty
Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.
American Express Cobalt® Card fees
Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.
Additional cards: $0.
Purchase interest rate: 21.99%.
Cash advance interest rate: 21.99%.
Foreign transaction fee: 2.5%.
Minimum income required: none.
Because the fee is billed monthly rather than in one annual charge, you can stop and restart the cost in step with how much you are actually using the card.

Insurance
The insurances are here as an indication. Please refer to the booklet provided by each company.
Each type of insurance varies in terms of monetary coverage or age of the policyholder. For example, some will offer $5,000 for trip cancellation while others will cover up to $500. Few cards will offer medical insurance beyond age 65. It’s something to think about because I’m getting close to that age range.
All World Elite cards offer excellent insurance, except the one offered by Canadian Tire. Although it is free, it works in a closed circuit and does not allow for travel purchases. The cash back in its currency provides great discounts or even free items at Canadian Tire, their garage and affiliated businesses whose profiles are primarily geared towards the purchase of sports equipment. Its gas stations let you earn CT points but you cannot redeem points there.
So if they give 3% back on groceries, that return must then be spent where Canadian Tire money is accepted. This doesn’t bring anyone to Europe or Asia, but it might appeal to someone who has renovations to do, camping or sports equipment to buy, for example. I’m thinking of the paddle board craze. It could be a good deal.
The fact that we can pay our taxes and our Hydro account is a plus with this credit card. But then again, I personally don’t find any use for Canadian Tire dollars. I could have my tires changed at the garage but I already have a local garage that I want to encourage.
Anyway, it’s an option for others than me. It won’t be my World Elite Mastercard because it doesn’t meet my criteria. Although free: no good insurance, no travel benefits, no interesting rewards.
The Triangle World Elite Mastercard is the premium version of Canadian Tire’s Triangle card, with no annual fee, available to people with a personal income of at least $80,000. It boosts rewards on groceries and at the pump.
You earn 3% in CT Money on groceries (on the first $12,000 per year, excluding Costco and Walmart), 4% in CT Money at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, Atmosphere, Party City and participating Sports Experts stores, plus 7¢ per litre in CT Money on premium gas and 5¢ per litre on other fuel types at participating Essence+, Gas+ and Husky stations.
The annual interest rate is 19.99% on purchases and 22.99% on cash advances. A 2.5% foreign transaction fee applies to purchases made in a foreign currency.

The two other cards in the World Elite category that cost the least to apply for are those from Desjardins:
In addition, their fees may be waived in the first year as well as in subsequent years for certain occupations and depending on the level of expenses. The same applies to NBC, BMO andHSBC World Elite Mastercard credit cards.
I particularly like the clause in their purchase insurance that doubles the duration of the merchant’s protection (maximum 1 year) and covers mobile devices, which not all credit cards offer.
They also have targeted offers for professionals – or those with a certain amount of wealth – who could have the annual fee waived.
I particularly like that the BMO and NBC cards allow you to pay for only part of the trip, such as taxes on an award ticket, and still benefit from insurance. For us points hunters, it’s very practical.

Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte TravelTM agency section of our À la carte RewardsTM site.
For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. For all conditions, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.

The cash back % when you apply purchases to these three cards is not the best when compared to Desjardins credit cards but they do have a sign-up bonus and travel benefits that interest me.
The National Bank World Elite Mastercard® stands out from the crowd with its unlimited admission to the NBC airport lounge in Montreal accompanied by a guest, and if we want to talk about an enhanced travel experience, its annual credit of up to $250 on certain travel expenses is tempting. And I appreciate the 15-day medical insurance coverage up to age 75.
And unlike the card offered by BMO, National Bank card points can be used for any travel purchase made with the card. Practical for an apartment rental on Airbnb for example!
To me, these are great options since I travel at least once a year!

The last word on my American Express Cobalt® Card.
It is the main reason I don’t look for a high discount rate for other cards at grocery stores, convenience stores, and food delivery.
With this Card, I earn 5 points per dollar (that’s 5% for travel rewards) and I’ve targeted the places where I use it: Metro, Giant Tiger, Cook It and Couche-Tard. And occasionally an IGA grocery store located further away. My pharmacy also accepts it. And when needed, I buy gift cards at Metro, like SAQ gift cards, to stretch my 5 points per dollar earnings.
Also, since it’s an American Express card, they have cardholder-only promotional offers. For example:
1,500 bonus points when you use contactless with your cell phone
$20 credit for every $100 in purchases at Esso
With all the promotional offers throughout the year, this quickly pays for the $12.99 monthly fee!
You can do the same exercise based on your needs. Make your own travel cards or cash back comparison charts. Shall we discuss it afterwards in the Facebook group?

So you can apply with confidence.*Instant decisions are only available for consumer Card applications (also called “personal Cards”).

Frequently Asked Questions about How to choose a World Elite Mastercard credit card
Why might I choose a World Elite Mastercard over a Visa Infinite or Amex?
World Elite Mastercards excel at broad acceptance: they work everywhere Mastercard is taken, including Costco gas bars and Costco warehouses where Visa is rejected. They also avoid Amex’s narrower merchant network.
Top reasons to consider one:
Costco acceptance for groceries, gas and bulk purchases
Lower minimum income than Visa Infinite Privilege ($80K vs. $200K household)
Mastercard’s Priceless Cities events also unlock concert pre-sales and exclusive dining experiences.
What’s the minimum income to qualify for a World Elite Mastercard?
The standard requirement for a World Elite Mastercard is $80,000 in personal income or $150,000 household income, which is more accessible than Visa Infinite ($60K personal / $100K household but stricter underwriting on premium tiers) and significantly lower than Visa Infinite Privilege at $200,000 household.
Some issuers have flexible underwriting:
BMO often approves with strong credit history even slightly below the threshold
National Bank considers existing banking relationships
Rogers Red World Elite requires the same $80K income
If you don’t qualify yet, the no-fee Tangerine World Mastercard is a solid stepping stone with 2% cash back on selected categories.
Which World Elite Mastercard has the best lounge access in Canada?
The National Bank World Elite Mastercard stands out for Quebec-based travellers, offering unlimited free access to the National Bank Lounge at Montreal-Trudeau (YUL) for the cardholder and one guest, plus DragonPass discounts at lounges worldwide.
Strong alternatives:
Desjardins Odyssey World Elite: 8 free passes to the Desjardins Odyssey Lounge at YUL
BMO Eclipse Visa Infinite: not Mastercard but offers 4 Plaza Premium passes (note: this is Visa, listed for comparison)
For frequent travellers, the National Bank lounge alone justifies the $150 annual fee, since drop-in lounge access typically costs $45–$65 USD per visit.
Can I have both a World Elite Mastercard and an Amex Cobalt at the same time?
Yes, and this is a common combo. Many cardholders pair an American Express Cobalt for grocery and restaurant spending (5x Membership Rewards) with a World Elite Mastercard for places that don’t accept Amex.
A typical dual-card setup:
Use the Cobalt at IGA, Loblaws, Sobeys, restaurants and food delivery (5x = roughly 5 percent return)
Combined annual fees of about $312 are easily offset by stacked rewards if your annual spending exceeds $25,000. See our credit card combinations guide for more dual-card strategies.
