Maghreb: How to Get There Using Points and Miles

Travelling to the Maghreb using points and miles is an increasingly popular option for those wishing to save on travel, whether to visit the region or to visit family. Indeed, this region is particularly attractive to Canadians, especially those from the Maghreb community, which is well represented in Montreal and in other major cities across the country.
Airline and hotel loyalty programs offer an excellent opportunity to discover North Africa without breaking the bank. But how can you maximize your points for a trip to the Maghreb, and what are the most advantageous options? Discover the best strategies for travelling to the Maghreb while making the most of your miles and points.
Maghreb Countries: What Are the 5 Maghreb Countries in North Africa?
The Maghreb refers to a region in north-west Africa, made up of several countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania. The region is known for its rich history, diverse landscapes, bustling souks, Mediterranean beaches, and vast deserts. Whether you’re drawn to culture, history or beaches, the Maghreb offers a multitude of opportunities for a memorable trip.
How Do I Get To the Maghreb With Points?
There are several ways to travel to the Maghreb, in North Africa, using points and miles. Major airlines, alliances, and loyalty programs make it possible to book award flights to this region, whether for a direct flight or with a stopover.
Travel to the Maghreb With Aeroplan Points
Aeroplan AirCanada‘s frequent flyer program offers several interesting options for travelling to the Maghreb with points. Although Air Canada does not directly serve all Maghreb destinations, you can use your Aeroplan points to book direct flights to major cities such as Casablanca or Algiers.
And thanks to airline partners such as Lufthansa and Swiss, you can easily find connections with award flights to any city in the Maghreb.
Aeroplan works by zone and distance. Here are some examples:
- A flight between Montreal and Casablanca is 3,534 miles away.
- A flight between Montreal and Algiers is 3,909 miles away.
- A flight between Montreal and Tunis via Frankfurt is 4,562 miles away.
These distances will determine the price in points of the plane ticket according to the following grid:

A flight to Casablanca costs 35,000 points, while a flight to Tunis costs 40,000 points, due to the greater distance between the two destinations, which puts Tunis in a higher price category.

It’s also important to note that flights operated by Air Canada are subject to dynamic pricing. So, while all seats are eligible to be booked with points, this is not the case for all airline partners. As a result, prices may sometimes be lower or higher than those originally planned. For example, the price may even be lower than the estimated 35,000 points. This can also apply when there is a combination of Air Canada and partner segments.

As far as airline partners alone are concerned, with few exceptions, award ticket prices remain fixed. However, it sometimes happens that there are no more seats available on these flights, which is why it’s important to book well in advance.
In business class, flights to North Africa start at 60,000 points one-way.
The major advantage of Aeroplan lies in its flexibility and the numerous options for booking award tickets with its airline partners. This allows you to maximize your points thanks to features such as the Aeroplan stopover, which lets you visit another city en route, or the possibility of booking tickets for babies at a reduced cost.

Excluded from the Bonus Rate are Air Canada Vacations packages, car rentals, hotel bookings, and other third party partner products and services that can be purchased through aircanada.com. Any returned items, refunds, rebates or other similar credits will reduce or cancel the Aeroplan Miles earned on the original Purchase. To earn this Bonus Rate, Purchases of gas, groceries, drugstore products/services and Air Canada Purchases must be made at merchants classified through the Visa* network with a Merchant Category Code (“MCC”) that identifies them in the “gas”, “grocery”, “drugstore” or “Air Canada” category. Some merchants may sell gas, groceries or drugstore products/services or Air Canada products/services, or have separate merchants located on their premises that also sell gas, groceries or drugstore products/services or Air Canada products/services, but may not be classified with a gas, grocery, drugstore or Air Canada MCC and such Purchases will not earn this Bonus Rate. If you have questions about the MCC that applies to a Purchase, contact TD at 1-800-983-8472. Bonus Rate is only available on the first $100,000 in net annual Purchases of gas, groceries, drugstore products/services and Air Canada Purchases made from January 1 to December 31 each year on your Account. Once the maximum net annual amount has been reached, Purchases of gas, groceries, drugstore products/services or Air Canada Purchases on the Account will not earn the Bonus Rate but will only earn Aeroplan Miles at the standard rate that applies to all other Purchases on the Account. This Bonus Rate offer is in place of, and not in addition to, the standard rate earned on all other Purchases made on your Account. Offer may be changed, withdrawn or extended at any time and cannot be combined with any other offer. 6 1.25 Aeroplan Miles are earned on each $1.00 in Purchases charged to your TD Aeroplan Credit Card Account (“Account”). Credit for returned items, refunds, rebates or other similar credits will reduce or cancel the Aeroplan Miles earned by the amount originally charged to your Account. Fees, Cash Advances (including Balance Transfers, Cash-Like Transactions and TD Visa Cheques), interest charges, optional services, refunds, rebates or other similar credits do not earn Aeroplan Miles. Please see the Aeroplan Terms for Your TD Credit Card section of the Cardholder Agreement for complete details on Aeroplan Miles earned on Purchases (a copy of your Cardholder Agreement is available at http://www.tdcanadatrust.com/tdvisa/agreements ). 7 The Toronto-Dominion Bank is not responsible for any Aeroplan Miles under this “earn miles twice” feature of the Aeroplan Program when the Aeroplan Membership Card is presented. From Montreal, it is possible to reach popular Maghreb destinations such as Casablanca, Algiers, and Tunis from 25,000 Flying Blue miles in economy class and 60,000 miles in business class. Taxes and fees can be significant, however, starting at approximately $267 per person compared to what you would pay with the Aeroplan program.

However, it is important to note that Air France fares are dynamic, which means that they are not guaranteed and may vary according to the dates chosen. It is therefore advisable to book in advance, up to 1 year before the desired date, to maximize your chances of benefiting from these attractive fares.
For children aged 11 and under, Flying Blue offers a 25% discount on award tickets. This represents a great opportunity to save, especially for families travelling to the Maghreb.
In addition, Flying Blue offers monthly promotions called « Promo Rewards« , which sometimes offer substantial discounts on award flights to the Maghreb and other destinations. These promotions can enable you to travel at a much lower cost, making a trip to this region even more accessible. Keep a close eye on these offers to take advantage of the best opportunities.
To earn Flying Blue miles in Canada, you can subscribe to the Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard® or transfer points from an American Express Membership Rewards card.

The American Express Cobalt® Card is the best credit card from American Express, whether you want points for travel or cash back.
American Express Cobalt® Card welcome offer
The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer we value at $255.
Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.
You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.
You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:
- 15,000 Aeroplan points
- 15,000 Avios points
- 15,000 Flying Blue Miles
- 18,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
If hotel points are what you are after, our ultimate guide to Marriott Bonvoy and our complete map of Marriott Bonvoy hotels by category show what those points can actually buy.
American Express Cobalt® Card benefits
Here is what the card gives you, starting with the benefits cardholders use most.
- 5X points on eligible eats and drinks in Canada: groceries, restaurants and bars, home food delivery and convenience stores. A spend cap applies.
- 3X points on eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada.
- 2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
- 1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.
- 1X point per dollar on everything else, with no category restrictions.
- Points that hold the same value either way: 1,000 points = $10 as a statement credit, or a 1:1 transfer to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
- No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
- Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
- The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
- Front Of The Line® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
- A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.
To see how it compares with the rest of the line-up, read our round-up of the best credit cards from American Express in Canada.
The 5X categories and where they apply
The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers four kinds of merchants:
- Groceries: Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, Safeway, Whole Foods.
- Restaurants and bars: sit-down meals, takeout and drinks.
- Home food delivery.
- Convenience stores: Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven.
The 2X rate covers gas stations such as Esso, Shell and Petro-Canada, along with public transit and ride sharing.
With the American Express Cobalt® Card, you earn between 1 and 5 points per dollar:
| Category | Points per dollar |
| Grocery (Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, etc.) | 5 |
| Home food delivery | 5 |
| Restaurants and bars | 5 |
| Convenience stores | 5 |
| Streaming services | 3 |
| Service station | 2 |
| Transport | 2 |
| Travel | 1 |
| Other | 1 |
That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.
You can also stack these categories with the hundreds of stores that offer 5x points.
American Express Cobalt® Card insurance coverage
The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.
Travel insurance
- Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
- Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
- Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
- Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
- Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
- Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.
Rental car insurance
Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.
Mobile device insurance
Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.
Purchase protection and extended warranty
Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.
American Express Cobalt® Card fees
- Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.
- Additional cards: $0.
- Purchase interest rate: 21.99%.
- Cash advance interest rate: 21.99%.
- Foreign transaction fee: 2.5%.
- Minimum income required: none.
Because the fee is billed monthly rather than in one annual charge, you can stop and restart the cost in step with how much you are actually using the card.

Travel to North Africa With Avios Points
The Oneworld alliance is also an interesting option for travelling to the Maghreb with points, thanks in particular to British Airways Executive Club. Alliance member Royal Air Maroc offers direct flights to Casablanca, your gateway to major Maghreb destinations. British Airways also offers direct flights to several major Maghreb destinations, including Marrakech, Casablanca and Tunis. As a member of the Avios frequent flyer program, you can use your points to book award tickets on all these routes.

Indeed, a particularly advantageous option is the ability to book direct flights on Royal Air Maroc between Montreal and Casablanca. You can find tickets starting at 20,750 Avios points for a one-way economy class flight, and 62,000 Avios points for a business class flight. These rates are quite attractive, but it’s important to note that taxes and fees can be fairly high. In fact, fees amount to about $300 in economy class and $400 in business class, which can significantly increase the total cost of the trip.

However, despite these additional fees, using Avios for these journeys remains an attractive option, especially if you have already accumulated a substantial number of Avios points (or RBC Avion points, which are very easy to earn and can be transferred during promotions). What’s more, the possibility of finding direct flights with Royal Air Maroc adds extra comfort, reducing connections and flight times to Morocco, your gateway to the Maghreb. In fact, you can use your Avios points to fly to any other destination in the Maghreb with Royal Air Maroc.
American Express Membership Rewards and RBC Avion Rewards are transfer partners that make it very easy to earn Avios in Canada, in addition to the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite, where you can earn Avios directly. Plus, there are recurring transfer bonuses to watch out for.

1 This offer only applies to new applications for an RBC Avion Visa Infinite or RBC Avion Visa Platinum credit card (each, an “Eligible Credit Card”) received between “August 13, 2026” and “November 25, 2026” (“Offer Period”) and approved by Royal Bank of Canada (“Royal Bank”) subject to the conditions below. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the Eligible Credit Card account, as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account transferring to an Eligible Credit Card account during the Offer Period, are not eligible for the offer.
35,000 welcome Avion points (“Welcome Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty (60) days after your application has been approved, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Welcome points are credited to your account, “good standing” meaning that your Eligible Credit Card account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive credit card account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status.
You will receive 20,000 bonus Avion points (“Bonus Points”) if a total of $5,000 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) are posted to your Eligible Credit Card account within the first six (6) months from your Eligible Credit Card account opening date (“Period”). The Bonus Points will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty days (60) after you reach $5,000 in Qualifying Transactions, provided your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Bonus Points are credited to your account.
Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges and fees. Credits for returns and adjustments posted to your Eligible Credit Card account during the Period will reduce the amount of your Qualifying Transactions. The Qualifying Transaction Amount is based on the transaction posting date of each Qualifying Transaction, not the transaction date. This means that transactions that take place prior to the last day of the Period will not be considered for the Qualifying Transaction Amount if they have not yet been posted or processed by the merchant, the payment network (Visa) or Royal Bank by the last day of the Period.
15,000 additional Avion points (“Anniversary Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks after the one- year anniversary of your account opening, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Anniversary Points are credited to your account.
If you close or change your Eligible Credit Card Account for another type of RBC Royal Bank credit card before the Welcome Points, the Bonus Points and/or the Anniversary Points have been credited to your account, you may lose the benefit of this offer. This offer may not be combined or used in conjunction with any other offer. Royal Bank reserves the right to cancel, modify or withdraw this offer at any time without notice, even after your application has been approved, including if we suspect that you may be manipulating or abusing it, or engaging in any suspicious or fraudulent activity, as determined by Royal Bank in its sole discretion. For complete terms and conditions that apply to the Avion Rewards Program, please visit www.avionrewards.com or call 1-800-769-2512.
^Point redemptions for flights under the Air Travel Redemption Schedule start at 7,500 points for a short-haul one-way Economy Class flight priced at no more than $175 (and start at 15,000 points for a short-haul round-trip Economy Class flight priced at no more than $350). The traveller is responsible for all applicable taxes, administration fees and surcharges. To learn more, including guidelines regarding redeeming points for a Business Class flight, visit www.avionrewards.com/fr/travel/.
2 Avion points are earned on qualifying net purchases only; they are not earned on cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant) interest charges or fees, and credits for returns and adjustments will reduce or cancel the points earned by the amounts originally charged.
4 To participate in this offer, you must have an RBC debit card or a credit card which is issued by Royal Bank of Canada (excluding RBC commercial credit cards) (“RBC Card”). RBC business clients will only be able to link up to two (2) RBC business credit cards and one (1) RBC business debit card to a Petro-Points card.
You must be enrolled in RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app in order to link your RBC Card to your Petro-Points card. Card linking may take up to 2 business days to process before savings and bonus points can be applied to purchases. A linked RBC Card means an RBC Card linked to a Petro-Points Account. Your linked RBC Card acts as your Petro-Points card. You will automatically earn Petro-Points when you pay for qualifying purchases with your linked RBC Card at Petro-Canada locations and you do not need to swipe your Petro-Points card before you pay. You can redeem your Petro-Points at Petro-Canada using your linked RBC Card. Each time you use your linked RBC Card to purchase any grade of gasoline, or diesel, at a Petro-Canada location, you will save three cents ($0.03) per litre at the time of the transaction.
6 Each time you use your linked Eligible Avion Rewards Credit Card to pay for purchases at a Petro-Canada Location, you will earn a bonus of twenty percent (20%) more Avion points than you normally earn for every $1 in purchases in accordance with the Avion Rewards Terms and Conditions. Please allow up to ninety (90) days from the date the transaction is posted on your credit card statement for the bonus points to be deposited into Avion Rewards account. Authorized Users are excluded from earning Avion points bonus.

12 You will earn 1.25 Avion points for every dollar spent when you use your RBC Avion Visa Infinite card to pay for travel-related purchases made at merchants classified by Visa’s “Merchant Category Code” (“MCC”) as “travel”, which may include: airlines, accommodations, tour operators, cruise lines, travel agencies and car rental companies. Even though some merchants may sell travel products/services, purchases made at these locations may not necessarily qualify for the 1.25 Avion points per dollar if the merchant is not classified with a “travel” MCC. Also, merchants that are not classified by a “travel” MCC may be located on the premises of merchants that are classified with a “travel” MCC, and purchases made at these locations may not qualify for this added benefit. 14 The term “redeem” means using your Be Well points to pay, or partially pay, for eligible purchases using your Be Well card at participating Rexall locations according to the instructions provided by the cashier, the point-of-sale terminal or any other payment processing device. You can redeem the Be Well points you earn for eligible purchases—see section 5 of the Be Well terms (available at https://www.letsbewell.ca/terms-conditions)—or for another purpose that we may provide from time to time.
You must have joined the Be Well program and registered your Be Well card, or otherwise called customer service, to redeem Be Well points. Any Be Well points earned on a Be Well card will remain the property of the Be Well administrator until the enrollment and registration process is complete.
You must redeem a minimum of 25,000 Be Well points at any time, which are worth $10. Be Well points can be redeemed in $10 increments, up to a maximum of $200 (500,000 Be Well points) in a single transaction. A maximum of 500,000 Be Well points can be redeemed within a 24-hour period.
In Ontario and British Columbia, Be Well points cannot be redeemed for prescription drugs. As the laws of each province and territory may change from time to time, you are encouraged to consult your pharmacist for more information in this regard.
Be Well points you earn when you make a purchase cannot be redeemed immediately for that same purchase. They can only be redeemed for a future eligible purchase that must be made at least 12 hours after earning those Be Well points.

1 This offer only applies to new applications for an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege credit card received between “August 13, 2026” and “November 25, 2026” (“Offer Period”) and approved by Royal Bank of Canada (“Royal Bank”) subject to the conditions below. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege account, as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account transferring to an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege account during the Offer Period, are not eligible for the offer.
35,000 welcome Avion points (“Welcome Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty (60) days after your application has been approved, provided that your RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege credit card account (“Credit Card Account”) remains open and in good standing at the time the Welcome points are credited to your account, “good standing” meaning that your Credit Card Account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive credit card account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status.
You will receive 20,000 bonus Avion points (“Bonus Points”) if a total of $5,000 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) are posted to your Credit Card Account within the first six (6) months from your Credit Card Account opening date (“Period”). The Bonus Points will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty (60) days after you reach $5,000 in Qualifying Transactions, provided your Credit Card Account remains open and in good standing at the time the Bonus Points are credited to your account.
Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges and fees, and credits for returns and adjustments posted to your Credit Card account during the Period will reduce the amount of your Qualifying Transactions.
45,000 additional Avion points (“Anniversary Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks after the one- year anniversary of your account opening, provided that your account remains open and in good standing at the time the Anniversary Points are credited to your account.
If you close or change your Credit Card Account for another type of RBC Royal Bank credit card before the Welcome Points, the Bonus Points and/or the Anniversary Points have been credited to your account, you may lose the benefit of this offer. 23A primary cardholder, a co-applicant and any authorized user (each an “eligible credit cardholder”) have access to airport lounges participating in the Visa Airport Companion program (“Program”), provided and managed by DragonPass International Ltd. (“DragonPass”).
Each cardholder must register individually for this benefit using the Visa Airport Companion app (available as a free download) or the Program website (visaairportcompanion.ca/fr) using their eligible credit card. During registration, the cardholder must enter their name (first and last name) as it appears on their passport (or on any other government-issued identification used for travel in Canada), as it will be verified upon entry to airport lounges.
Once registered, the cardholder will be entitled to six (6) free airport lounge accesses per membership year; free accesses may be used by the cardholder for themselves and for accompanying guests. Visits beyond the free accesses are subject to a fee of US $32 (subject to change) per person. Applicable access fees will be charged to the eligible credit card associated with the cardholder’s Program membership card.
Membership includes access to any airport lounge participating in the Program. After registering for the Program, the cardholder can access airport lounges by presenting one of the following three (3) items: i) their eligible credit card, ii) their digital membership card and QR code from the app or Program website, or iii) their printed or emailed e-certificate containing the membership card and QR code.
Program membership will be suspended if the eligible credit card is closed or inactive, is no longer linked to the Program, or is no longer a product participating in the Program. It is the cardholder’s responsibility to report any changes to the information of their eligible credit card linked to the Program. If the cardholder uses a printed or emailed e-certificate to access a lounge, they must obtain a new e-certificate if changes are made to their eligible credit card information. Unless suspended or cancelled, Program membership and any free accesses included are automatically renewed each year on the anniversary date (i.e., the date the cardholder registered for the Program). Program membership may be suspended if the eligible credit card is no longer in good standing.
Cardholders can consult the app or Program website for the complete list of participating airport lounges, as well as the facilities offered, hours of operation and any restrictions. Registered cardholders are subject to the terms and conditions of the worldwide airport lounge access program and the terms of use of each participating lounge operator visited, which are available in the app or Program website. Refer to RBC page for up to date offer terms and conditions
ˆ This offer only applies to new applications for a RBC British Airways Visa Infinite credit card received and approved by Royal Bank of Canada (“Royal Bank”), subject to the conditions below. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite credit card account are not eligible for this offer. Existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account transferring to a RBC British Airways Visa Infinite credit card, are not eligible for the offer.
To receive the offer of 50,000 Avios points (“Bonus”), (i) a total of $6,000 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) must be posted to your Credit Card Account within the first 90 days of your Credit Card Account opening date (“Period”), and (ii) your Credit Card must remain open and in good standing, “good standing” meaning that your Credit Card Account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive Credit Card Account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status at that time. If you are not currently a member of The British Airways Club, you will be enrolled automatically once you are approved for the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite credit card. Please note that the address your British Airways Club account is registered under must match the one for your RBC British Airways Visa Infinite account at all times for the Avios to be posted to your British Airways Club account. The Bonus will be awarded to your British Airways Club account, approximately 15 weeks after the date you reach $6,000 in Qualifying Transactions within the Period.
Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges and fees. Credits for returns and adjustments posted to your Credit Card Account during the Period will reduce the amount of your Qualifying Transactions.
If you close or change your RBC British Airways Visa Infinite credit card for another type of RBC Royal Bank credit card before the Bonus has been credited to your British Airways Club account, you may lose the benefit of this offer. This offer may not be combined or used in conjunction with any other offer, except as otherwise set out. Royal Bank of Canada and British Airways reserve the right to modify, cancel or withdraw this offer at any time. British Airways, not Royal Bank of Canada, is responsible for this offer and The British Airways Club program. For all British Airways Club Terms and Conditions, please visit ba.com/theclub .
An eligible member who makes at least $30,000 CAD in eligible purchases on their card during a calendar year (a calendar year is the period starting January 1 and ending December 31) will receive a single companion voucher during that same calendar year. Travel to the Maghreb With VIPorter Points
The VIPorter program could also become an interesting option for traveling to the Maghreb thanks to the partnership between Porter Airlines and Air Transat. Indeed, Air Transat already offers several direct flights between Montreal and some popular Maghreb destinations, including Marrakech and Agadir. Although it is not yet possible, at the time of writing, to book these flights directly with VIPorter points, the integration of the partnership suggests this possibility in the near future.
If these exchanges become available, travelers could eventually use their VIPorter points to book flights operated by Air Transat to Morocco, which would add an interesting new option for those wishing to travel to the Maghreb with points. This would be particularly advantageous for travelers looking for direct flights to avoid layovers.
VIPorter points are relatively easy to accumulate through Porter flights and partner credit cards. It could therefore become relevant to monitor the evolution of this partnership for future trips to the Maghreb.

Travel to the Maghreb With Travel Points
Some credit cards and rewards programs, such as NBC Rewards, Scene+, CIBC Aventura, TD Rewards, and many others, offer the possibility of using travel points to book flights to the Maghreb. These programs are particularly advantageous, as they are much more flexible than traditional loyalty programs, not being limited to a single airline or alliance.
You have the option to use your points to book tickets with various airlines, which offers you greater flexibility as well as a wide range of options to compare. For example, Air Transat is currently the only airline to offer a direct flight between Montreal and Agadir or Marrakech. Therefore, if you want to save time and avoid layovers, travel points can allow you to book the flight that best suits your needs. Then, you will have the option to use your points as a credit applied to your account, in order to reimburse part or all of the cost of your plane ticket.
This flexibility is particularly useful in situations where the use of points from airline programs is not optimal. Indeed, the value of airline points can vary, and it is not always advantageous to use them if their exchange value is low at a given moment. In this case, it may be preferable to keep the points for later use, when their value will be more attractive, and to pay in cash.
However, « paying cash » doesn’t necessarily mean taking money out of your pocket. It actually means turning to other types of points or cash back, which can be used to reimburse the purchase of your plane ticket, making the process more flexible and often more advantageous in the short term.
Here’s an example of using NBC Rewards points to purchase a flight to Algiers on Air Algérie, which offers a direct connection from Montreal, but is not a member of the major alliances that use Aeroplan, Flying Blue, or Avios.

National Bank reserves the right to request additional supporting documents for validation purposes (e.g., invoices). An unused reimbursement in one year cannot be carried over to the next year. You can make your request online at rewards.nbc.ca or by calling 1-800-341-8083 (toll-free) for an agent to assist you with your travel fee reimbursement request. - Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
- These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
- Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
- Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
- To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
- Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
- To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte TravelTM agency section of our À la carte RewardsTM site.
- For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
- Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. For all conditions, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.

Maximum potential value after the first year = $1,254 (rounded to $1,250)
The actual value of offers, savings realized and points earned will vary depending on card usage and eligibility for applicable offers. Conditions apply.
1 Offer description and conditions: The 25,000 Scene+ points offer (the « offer ») applies only to new Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card credit card accounts (the « accounts ») opened between August 4, 2026 and November 1, 2026 (regardless of the date you apply for the account) subject to the conditions below. The offer may be modified, cancelled or extended at any time without notice, and it cannot be combined with any other offer.
In addition, as a Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Cardholder, you are eligible for an annual bonus of 10,000 Scene+ points if you charge at least $40,000 in eligible everyday purchases to your Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card account over the course of one year. Conditions apply; see below for more details.
Description and conditions of the 25,000 bonus Scene+ points offer: To be eligible for the 25,000 bonus Scene+ points offer (« 25,000 bonus points »), you must charge at least $2,000 in total eligible purchases to your account within the first three months following the account opening date.
Conditions for the annual 10,000 Scene+ points bonus:
As a Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card credit cardholder, you can earn an annual bonus of at least 10,000 Scene+ points (the « annual points bonus ») if you charge at least $40,000 in eligible purchases to your account over the course of one year (12-month period). The annual period begins on the account opening date; a new period starts again every twelve months thereafter. If you replace another Scene+-eligible credit card with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card (i.e., it is not a new card or an additional card), the opening date of your original account will be carried over to your new Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card account and your annual period under this offer will begin on the next anniversary date of your original account opening. For example, if you originally opened a Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card account on January 15, 2022 and you switch to the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card on July 15, 2025, your annual period under the 10,000 Scene+ points annual bonus offer will begin on January 15, 2026 (your next anniversary date) and a new period will start again on January 15 each year thereafter. You will earn 2,000 bonus Scene+ points for each additional $10,000 in purchases made during the same year once you have reached the $40,000 annual purchase threshold.
Eligible purchases means purchases, less refunds, returns and any other similar credits, and excludes payments, cash advances (including balance transfers and quasi-cash transactions), interest charges, as well as card fees and other fees.
Fulfillment of the annual points bonus: Bonus points will be credited within approximately eight weeks after you become eligible for a bonus, provided the account is open and in good standing. In the case of a joint account with a primary borrower and a co-borrower, bonus points will be credited as follows: (i) the 25,000 bonus points and the annual points bonus will be credited to the Scene+ account linked to the account of the borrower who made the transaction that reached the eligible purchase threshold ($2,000, or $40,000) within the appropriate timeframe (the first three months, or the first 12 months). If an additional cardholder makes the transaction that reaches the eligible purchase threshold for the 25,000 bonus points, or the annual points bonus, the bonus points will be credited to the Scene+ account linked to the primary borrower’s account. It is possible to transfer points between the Scene+ accounts of a primary borrower, a co-borrower or an additional cardholder by contacting Scene+. An account is in good standing if it is not past due, there is no over-limit, and the cardholder(s) have complied with the terms of the Revolving Credit Agreement that applies to the account. All other program conditions continue to apply during the offer period.
Offer eligibility and exclusions: You cannot take advantage of the offer if you are currently a primary or secondary cardholder of a Scotiabank personal credit card or have been one in the past two years, including if you transfer your balance from an existing Scotiabank personal credit card account, and if you are a Scotiabank employee. Subject to the exclusions mentioned above, small business credit cardholders are eligible for this offer.
Rates and fees: The annual fees are $150 for the primary card, $0 for the first additional card and $50 for each additional card thereafter (including those issued to joint account holders and additional cardholders). The preferred annual interest rates applicable to the account are as follows: 20.99% on purchases and 22.99% on cash advances (including balance transfers and quasi-cash transactions). The rates, fees, and features and benefits, which are described in the disclosure statement accompanying the application, may be changed.

What’s the Best Points Program for Flights to the Maghreb?
Choosing the best points program for travel to the Maghreb depends on several important criteria: availability of award seats, ease of points accumulation and flexibility of booking options. Programs such as Aeroplan, Flying Blue, and Avios offer unique benefits depending on your priorities. Added to this are more flexible points programs, which can be tailored to your specific needs.
The key lies in how your travel goals align with the points accumulation opportunities offered by each program. Programs vary in their approach to earning and using miles, which can have a direct impact on your travel experience.
If you want to optimize your search and quickly identify the best points offers for your departure dates, tools like Roame can be particularly useful. They make it easy to compare the options available and find the most advantageous program for your trip.
Where to Stay In the Maghreb With Points?
Stay In Maghreb in Chain Hotels Like Marriott Bonvoy
In addition to flights, you can also book accommodation in the Maghreb with your points. Several international hotel chains, such as Marriott, Accor or Hilton, offer attractive options in must-see cities such as Marrakech, Casablanca or Tunis. Programs such as Marriott Bonvoy, Accor Live Limitless or Hilton Honors allow you to redeem your points for quality stays.
Here are a few examples of Marriott hotels where you can redeem your points:
- AnaYela, Marrakesh, a member of Design Hotels (Marrakech, Morocco)
- Le Méridien N’Fis (Marrakech, Morocco)
- Casablanca Marriott Hotel (Casablanca, Morocco)
- Sheraton Tunis Hotel (Tunis, Tunisia)
You could also benefit from discounted rooms, such as with the fifth night free in points with Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors, which is a great way to maximize your use of points.

What’s more, annual one-night free certificates can be particularly advantageous in certain destinations. For as little as $120 or $150 when you renew your Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card and Marriott Bonvoy® Business American Express®* Card, you’ll enjoy exceptional value when you use them for a stay at selected hotels.

Apply with confidence — no impact on your credit scoreⓘApply with confidenceCheck whether your application will be approved before you submit it, with no impact on your credit score*When you apply for a personal American Express Credit Card, we will tell you whether you are eligible without affecting your credit score. So you can apply with confidence.*Instant decisions are only available for consumer Card applications (also called “personal Cards”).
The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.
New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:
- Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
- Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.
This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.
Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.
To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.
The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.
You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.
Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.
Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.
You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.
The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.
Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

Staying in the Maghreb at chain hotels like Fairmont
Fairmont hotels also represent an excellent option for staying in the Maghreb with your points, particularly in Morocco where the chain owns some of the most luxurious properties in the region. Thanks to the ALL – Accor Live Limitless program, you can use your points to reduce the cost of your stays in iconic hotels. These establishments offer a high-end experience with spas, golf courses, fine dining, and prime locations near major tourist attractions.
Here are a few examples of Fairmont hotels where you can redeem your points:
- Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech (Marrakech, Morocco)
- Fairmont La Marina Rabat-Salé (Rabat, Morocco)
Unlike some hotel programs that use category charts, ALL – Accor Live Limitless operates with a fixed point value, allowing you to apply your points directly as a discount on the room rate. This offers a certain level of simplicity and flexibility.
Stay In Maghreb in Independent Hotels With Points
If you’re looking for something more authentic or local, travel points programs, like those from NBC Rewards or TD Prime, also offer the option of booking independent hotels, traditional riads, or Airbnbs in the major cities of the Maghreb. These programs are very flexible and allow you to transform your points into travel credits, which can be used for any type of travel-related expense, giving you greater freedom in your choice of accommodation.

Conclusion

- Cash advance interest rate: 21.99%.
