Here are two Tangerine credit cards that reward the same spending categories, but in two very different ways:
Tangerine World Elite vs Money-Back: it is one of the most common questions since the Rewards card launched. On one side, the World Elite earns Scene+ points and costs $120 a year. On the other, the Money-Back World Mastercard pays you cash and costs nothing. The right choice depends on your income, how much you spend and how you plan to use your rewards. To see both cards against the rest of the market, check our list of the best Tangerine credit cards.
Our analysis focuses on the main differences between these two credit cards:
- The type of reward: Scene+ points on one side, cash on the other
- The annual fee: $120 versus no fee
- The income requirement: the World Elite threshold versus the World threshold
- The welcome offer: 50,000 points versus $120
- The travel perks: lounges, medical coverage and protections

Welcome offer
The two offers differ in size and in deadline. The World Elite asks you to spend more, but it also pays a lot more.
The Tangerine® Rewards World Elite Mastercard®* offers 50,000 Scene+ points when you spend $5,000 in net purchases in the first 3 months. You must apply by January 31, 2027. At our valuation of 1¢ per point, the bonus is worth about $500.
The Tangerine® Money-Back World Mastercard®* offers $120 cash back when you spend $1,500 in net purchases in the first 3 months. Tangerine states that the 90-day window starts when you activate the card, and that you must apply by November 30, 2026.
Once the annual fee is taken out, the first-year gap stays wide:
- Rewards World Elite: about $380 net, or $500 minus the $120 fee.
- Money-Back World Mastercard: $120, with no fee to subtract.
To earn the World Elite bonus, though, you need to spend about $1,667 a month for 3 months.
How the rewards add up
Both cards use the same pick-your-categories system. Tangerine offers 13 categories, including grocery, restaurants, gas, drug store and recurring bill payments. You can change your categories every 90 days.
Rewards World Elite: Scene+ points
The World Elite earns 1.5 Scene+ points per dollar in 3 categories of your choice and 1 point per dollar on everything else. Tangerine does not announce any cap on these rates.
It adds an Annual Spend Reward of 10,000 Scene+ points, worth about $100, when your net purchases reach $30,000 over 12 months. For a big spender, that bonus comes back every year.
Money-Back World Mastercard: cash
The Money-Back card pays 2% cash back in 2 categories of your choice and 0.5% on everything else. A third bonus category opens up when your cash back is deposited into a Tangerine Savings Account. The cash back is unlimited.
What each dollar actually earns
An earn rate means little without the value of the point. Milesopedia values a Scene+ point at 1¢. Here is the return in cents per dollar.
| Spending type | Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard | Tangerine Money-Back World Mastercard |
|---|---|---|
| Your 3 bonus categories | 1.5 pts/$, or 1.5¢/$ | 2%, or 2¢/$ (3rd category with a Tangerine Savings Account) |
| All other purchases | 1 pt/$, or 1¢/$ | 0.5%, or 0.5¢/$ |
| Annual Spend Reward | 10,000 points (about $100) at $30,000 in net purchases over 12 months | None |
| Annual fee | $120 | $0 |
Scene+ points or cash: the math
This is the heart of the matchup. The two cards win in different places:
- In your 3 categories: the Money-Back card returns 2%, versus 1.5% for the World Elite.
- Everywhere else: the World Elite returns 1%, twice what the Money-Back card pays.
Add the $100 Annual Spend Reward and the $120 fee, and you get a simple rule.
From the second year on, the World Elite earns more than the Money-Back card only when both conditions are met:
- Volume: you spend at least $30,000 a year, so you collect the Annual Spend Reward.
- Mix: your spending outside your categories is at least $4,000 higher than your spending in your 3 bonus categories.
Under $30,000 a year, the World Elite almost never catches up financially. Your non-bonus spending would have to exceed your bonus spending by $24,000.
Three profiles, three answers
Our math assumes the same 3 bonus categories on both cards, which means depositing your cash back into a Tangerine Savings Account. Scene+ points are counted at 1¢.
Profile 1: single person earning $60,000. There is no real choice here, because that income is below the World Elite threshold. The Money-Back card is the only option, and a good one.
Profile 2: eligible household spending $2,000 a month, half in the 3 categories and half elsewhere. The World Elite wins the first year thanks to its bonus, then the Money-Back card takes the lead. Over 3 years, the two cards finish almost tied.
Profile 3: eligible household spending $4,000 a month, including $1,500 in the 3 categories. The World Elite wins every year, and the gap is widest in year one thanks to the bonus.
The table below shows the details. These amounts leave out lounges, insurance and fuel discounts: they only compare what each card earns you, minus its annual fee.
| Profile | Money-Back, year 1 | World Elite, year 1 | Money-Back, 3-year total | World Elite, 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profile 2: $24,000 a year ($12,000 in categories) | $420 | $680 | $1,020 | $1,040 |
| Profile 3: $48,000 a year ($18,000 in categories) | $630 | $1,050 | $1,650 | $2,150 |
Annual fee
The Tangerine® Rewards World Elite Mastercard®* costs $120 a year. The Tangerine® Money-Back World Mastercard®* has no annual fee, and its authorized users are free.
Both cards charge a 2.5% foreign transaction fee. Note, however, that foreign currency spend is one of the 13 categories you can pick. On the Money-Back card, that category returns 2% and wipes out most of the fee. On the World Elite, it earns 1.5 points per dollar.
Income requirements
This is often the deciding factor before any math. Tangerine asks for one of these criteria:
- Rewards World Elite: personal income of $80,000, household income of $150,000 or $400,000 in assets under management at Tangerine.
- Money-Back World Mastercard: personal income of $50,000, household income of $80,000 or $250,000 in combined Tangerine balances.
On the other hand, interest rates are identical on both cards, as is the 1.95% promotional rate for 6 months on balance transfers. Income is the only real gatekeeper.
Insurance and perks
This is where the World Elite earns part of its fee.
Insurance
The World Elite includes travel medical insurance. According to Tangerine, it covers up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip, for insured persons under 65. It also adds trip cancellation (up to $2,000 per person), trip interruption, flight delay and baggage coverage.
The Money-Back card has no travel medical insurance. Both cards do share 90-day purchase protection, a one-year extended warranty, mobile device insurance and car rental coverage. That last one covers rentals of up to 48 days with the World Elite, versus 31 days with the Money-Back card.
Lounges and fuel
The World Elite includes a DragonPass membership through Mastercard Travel Pass, with 4 free lounge visits per year. Tangerine values this perk at $291. The Money-Back card also gives access to the DragonPass network, but with no free visits included.
At Shell, once your card is linked to Shell Go+, the World Elite gives up to 10¢ per litre in value, versus 8¢ for the Money-Back card.
Verdict by profile
No single answer fits everyone. Here are three distinct profiles.
You just want cash
Your income is under $80,000, or you spend less than $30,000 a year. In that case, the Tangerine® Money-Back World Mastercard®* is the clear pick. It costs nothing, pays 2% in your 3 biggest categories and there is no program to learn.
You spend a lot and travel
You spend more than $2,500 a month, a good share of it outside your categories, and you fly a few times a year. In that case, the Tangerine® Rewards World Elite Mastercard®* serves you better. It earns more every year, adds 4 lounge visits and protects your trips.
You are still on the fence
The World Elite almost always wins the first year, thanks to its 50,000 points. If you qualify and can spend $5,000 in 3 months, you can start with it. Then run the numbers again at your first anniversary, before the fee is charged.
Conclusion
So which card wins this Tangerine World Elite vs Money-Back matchup? In year one, the World Elite wins clearly, with 50,000 Scene+ points versus $120. Over time, the Money-Back card remains the better option for most households, because it costs nothing and pays more in the categories where people spend the most.
That said, the World Elite has a real reason to exist. For a big spender who travels, its points, Annual Spend Reward, lounge visits and medical coverage make the difference. It also requires a higher income, which often settles the question.

Tangerine World Elite vs Money-Back: frequently asked questions
Here are the most common questions about these two cards.
Which Tangerine card has the better welcome bonus?
The Tangerine® Rewards World Elite Mastercard® leads with 50,000 Scene+ points when you spend $5,000 in 3 months, if you apply by January 31, 2027. The Tangerine® Money-Back World Mastercard® offers $120 when you spend $1,500 in 3 months, until November 30, 2026. At 1¢ per point, the World Elite bonus is worth about $500.
How much is a Scene+ point worth?
Milesopedia values a Scene+ point at 1¢ when you use it for travel or groceries with program partners. As a statement credit, we use 0.8¢, and for merchandise, 0.6¢. How you redeem makes a big difference to the result. Our Scene+ program page covers the options.
What income do you need for each card?
The Rewards World Elite requires a personal income of $80,000, a household income of $150,000 or $400,000 in assets under management at Tangerine. The Money-Back World Mastercard asks for a personal income of $50,000, a household income of $80,000 or $250,000 in combined Tangerine balances. Under $80,000 of personal income, only the Money-Back card is open to you, unless your household income reaches $150,000.
When does the World Elite earn more?
From the second year on, the World Elite earns more if you spend at least $30,000 a year and your non-bonus spending exceeds your bonus-category spending by at least $4,000. Below that, the Money-Back card earns more once the $120 fee is taken out. In year one, the 50,000-point bonus gives the World Elite the edge in almost every case.
Do you need a Tangerine Savings Account for the third category?
Yes. The Money-Back card pays 2% in 2 categories, and a third 2% category is added when your cash back is deposited into a Tangerine Savings Account. Without that deposit, the third category earns 0.5%, which favours the World Elite. Our Tangerine Savings Account page explains the details.
Which card includes airport lounge access?
Only the Rewards World Elite includes 4 free visits per year to lounges in the DragonPass network, through Mastercard Travel Pass. Tangerine values this perk at $291 a year. The Money-Back card gives access to the network, but with no free visits included.
Can you hold both Tangerine cards?
We found no restriction on this on Tangerine’s product pages, but approval is at Tangerine’s discretion. One possible strategy is to put your favourite categories on the Money-Back card and the rest of your spending on the World Elite. This setup only makes sense if your total spending justifies the $120 annual fee.
