Credit card rewards are a fantastic way to get a little something back every time you make a purchase, whether you’re shopping for groceries or booking a hotel for a trip abroad.
Additionally, many cards offer a valuable range of perks and benefits that can improve your travel experiences, keep your purchases safe, and save you even more money.
Two travel cards, two very different philosophies. The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card rewards you with Scene+ points, 6 airport lounge passes, and a solid welcome bonus. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card keeps it dead simple: 2% cash back on everything, no foreign transaction fees, no tracking required. Both skip FX fees, which alone puts them ahead of most cards in Canada. The question is which one actually fits how you spend.
With the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card, earn 2% cash back on all your purchases, with no categories to track and no cap.
In addition, there are no foreign exchange fees on any purchase made in a currency other than the Canadian dollar, and no annual fee if you hold more than $100,000 in assets with Wealthsimple, or if you transfer the direct deposit of an eligible payroll to Wealthsimple.
To be eligible for this card, you must meet one of the following: a personal income of at least $80,000, a household income of at least $150,000, a minimum annual spend of $25,000, or at least $300,000 in assets with Wealthsimple.
Some travel insurance is not currently offered to Quebec residents.

Annual Fee Waiver
The Annual Fee (“Fee”) for the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite* or Wealthsimple Visa Infinite Privilege* credit card (“Card”) is $240 and is charged monthly at $20. The monthly fee is charged when the Card is issued (regardless of activation) and is billed to the first statement and once a month thereafter, unless this Fee is waived. Waiving the Fee is a promotional offer (“Fee Waiver Offer”) and requires clients to meet specific criteria to qualify and continue having the Fee waived. The Card Fee is automatically waived for any client with a Premium or Generation status, and the Fee will continue to be waived so long as that status is maintained. The Fee Waiver Offer is also available to Core clients who direct deposit at least $4,000 per month into their Wealthsimple Chequing Account (“Chequing Account”) within the preceding 30-days. Only direct deposits classified by Payments Canada as pre-authorized transactions with transaction codes ranging from 200 to 207, 310, 311, and 318 would be considered eligible. (“Qualifying Deposit”). If a Core client doesn’t make a Qualifying Deposit, or if a Premium or Generation client cannot maintain their status and becomes a Core client without a Qualifying Deposit, the monthly fee of $20 will be added to their next statement and continue to be charged until a Qualifying Deposit is confirmed.
For residents of Quebec: The Quebec Annual Fee (“Annual Fee”) for the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite* or Wealthsimple Visa Infinite Privilege* credit card is $240 and is charged when the Card is issued (regardless of activation) and is billed to the first statement and once a year thereafter. The Annual Fee is automatically waived for any client with Premium or Generation status at the time the Card is issued. If a Core client obtains Premium or Generation status after the Annual Fee has been applied, a prorated refund will be issued for the number of months remaining in the current twelve (12) month period, which starts on the anniversary of the Card issuance date (“Card Year”) from the month eligibility is obtained ($20 per month). The Quebec Fee Waiver Offer is also available to Core clients who direct deposit at least $4,000 per month into their Chequing Account within the 30-days preceding the time the Card is issued. Only direct deposits classified by Payments Canada as pre-authorized transactions with transaction codes ranging from 200 to 207, 310, 311, and 318 would be considered eligible. Credit Card Rewards (Cashback Offer)
The cash back promotional offer (“Cashback Offer”) is valid for new and existing users of the Card. The 2% earn rate, which may be subject to change, applies to purchases, excluding cash-like transactions, refunds, any applicable fees and adjustments (“Qualified Spend”). Cash back credits are earned on Qualified Spend only. You may redeem your cash back as soon as the Qualified Spend transaction is settled or up to 10 years after the Qualified Spend transaction is settled. Cash back can be redeemed directly in the app. Cash back can only be deposited into your Wealthsimple chequing, TFSA, RRSP, or non-registered accounts. There is no minimum amount needed to redeem. If a refund is processed after the Cash back credit is redeemed, the amount will be deducted from your rewards balance.

The actual value of offers, savings realized and points earned will vary depending on card usage and eligibility for applicable offers. Conditions apply.
1 Offer description and conditions: The 25,000 Scene+ points offer (the « offer ») applies only to new Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card credit card accounts (the « accounts ») opened between August 4, 2026 and November 1, 2026 (regardless of the date you apply for the account) subject to the conditions below. The offer may be modified, cancelled or extended at any time without notice, and it cannot be combined with any other offer.
In addition, as a Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Cardholder, you are eligible for an annual bonus of 10,000 Scene+ points if you charge at least $40,000 in eligible everyday purchases to your Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card account over the course of one year. Conditions apply; see below for more details.
Description and conditions of the 25,000 bonus Scene+ points offer: To be eligible for the 25,000 bonus Scene+ points offer (« 25,000 bonus points »), you must charge at least $2,000 in total eligible purchases to your account within the first three months following the account opening date.
Conditions for the annual 10,000 Scene+ points bonus: As a Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card credit cardholder, you can earn an annual bonus of at least 10,000 Scene+ points (the « annual points bonus ») if you charge at least $40,000 in eligible purchases to your account over the course of one year (12-month period). The annual period begins on the account opening date; a new period starts again every twelve months thereafter. If you replace another Scene+-eligible credit card with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card (i.e., it is not a new card or an additional card), the opening date of your original account will be carried over to your new Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card account and your annual period under this offer will begin on the next anniversary date of your original account opening. For example, if you originally opened a Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card account on January 15, 2022 and you switch to the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card on July 15, 2025, your annual period under the 10,000 Scene+ points annual bonus offer will begin on January 15, 2026 (your next anniversary date) and a new period will start again on January 15 each year thereafter. You will earn 2,000 bonus Scene+ points for each additional $10,000 in purchases made during the same year once you have reached the $40,000 annual purchase threshold.
Eligible purchases means purchases, less refunds, returns and any other similar credits, and excludes payments, cash advances (including balance transfers and quasi-cash transactions), interest charges, as well as card fees and other fees.
Fulfillment of the annual points bonus: Bonus points will be credited within approximately eight weeks after you become eligible for a bonus, provided the account is open and in good standing. In the case of a joint account with a primary borrower and a co-borrower, bonus points will be credited as follows: (i) the 25,000 bonus points and the annual points bonus will be credited to the Scene+ account linked to the account of the borrower who made the transaction that reached the eligible purchase threshold ($2,000, or $40,000) within the appropriate timeframe (the first three months, or the first 12 months). If an additional cardholder makes the transaction that reaches the eligible purchase threshold for the 25,000 bonus points, or the annual points bonus, the bonus points will be credited to the Scene+ account linked to the primary borrower’s account. It is possible to transfer points between the Scene+ accounts of a primary borrower, a co-borrower or an additional cardholder by contacting Scene+. An account is in good standing if it is not past due, there is no over-limit, and the cardholder(s) have complied with the terms of the Revolving Credit Agreement that applies to the account. All other program conditions continue to apply during the offer period.
Offer eligibility and exclusions: You cannot take advantage of the offer if you are currently a primary or secondary cardholder of a Scotiabank personal credit card or have been one in the past two years, including if you transfer your balance from an existing Scotiabank personal credit card account, and if you are a Scotiabank employee. Subject to the exclusions mentioned above, small business credit cardholders are eligible for this offer.
Rates and fees: The annual fees are $150 for the primary card, $0 for the first additional card and $50 for each additional card thereafter (including those issued to joint account holders and additional cardholders). The preferred annual interest rates applicable to the account are as follows: 20.99% on purchases and 22.99% on cash advances (including balance transfers and quasi-cash transactions). The rates, fees, and features and benefits, which are described in the disclosure statement accompanying the application, may be changed.

In this head-to-head, we’ll look at how these two cards, earning different styles of rewards, compare to one another across the following 6 categories:
To begin our comparison, we’ll look at the welcome bonus offered by each of these credit cards since these are often a way to jumpstart your rewards account balance.
These offers do fluctuate, but as an example, the card is currently offering up to 35,000 bonus Scene+ points, broken down as follows:
Earn 25,000 Scene+ points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months as a cardholder
Earn an annual bonus of 10,000 Scene+ points if you spend at least $40,000 on the card annually
Advantage: Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +*
For this first category, we’re crowning the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card as the winner since it offers new cardholders the chance to earn up to 35,000 Scene+ points, which are worth upwards of $350 when redeemed for travel, groceries, and more.
In terms of minimum income, both cards have essentially identical requirements, entirely in line with what we expect to see for a Visa Infinite + card. Given this, we’re calling this category a tie.
Annual Fee
Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card
The annual fee for the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card comes to $240/year. For residents of Quebec, this fee is paid in full upfront, whereas residents in the rest of Canada are charged a monthly fee of $20.
Notably, this fee can be waived if you have assets of at least $100,000 with Wealthsimple or have at least $4,000 in qualifying direct deposits going into your Wealthsimple Chequing Account each month.
Depending on your preferences for rewards, each of these options has a lot of potential value, so let’s take a look at each program to see what we can expect from spending with these cards.
Since Scene+ points are generally worth 1 cent each, the earning rates with the Scotiabank card are worth upwards of 4%, 3%, 2%, and 1%. Comparing this to the 2% base earning rate of the Wealthsimple card, plus its potential for cash back rates as high as 10%, the Scotia card pulls ahead for dedicated Sobeys shoppers and travellers who consistently book through Scene+ Travel. For everyone else, Wealthsimple’s earning rate is simply higher on most of what they actually buy.
Gift cards (~0.75 cents per point: up to 1 cent per point at Scene+ partner stores like Sobeys, less for other retailers)
Credit card statements (0.67 cents per point)
Draw
With the redemption category, it’s a bit difficult to choose a winner since a lot of it comes down to personal preference.
On the one hand, cash back is wonderfully straightforward (I mean, who doesn’t like a cash bonus to lower their expenses each month?), but on the other hand, Scene+ lets you pick and choose and change where you redeem, and it lets you save up for bigger redemptions and enjoy travel without ever exchanging actual money.
As noted above, Scene+ points can typically be redeemed for 1 cent each, giving the Scotiabank card the higher, consistent earning rate. That said, Wealthsimple’s earning rate of 2% is comparable to the Scotiabank card’s rate on everything except for eligible groceries and travel expenses.
Additionally, Wealthsimple’s new promotional rates of up to 10% cash back with select merchants are quite compelling, and we think it’s likely that the list of eligible merchants will expand, making it a feature that’s certainly worth watching.
All this is to say that we’re calling this category a draw since both cards offer similar redemption value, and the best card is ultimately whichever one earns the rewards you prefer to redeem.
However, we think the Scotiabank card comes out just ahead in this category thanks to its additional offer of 6 complimentary airport lounge passes. Not only are these wonderful to have when travelling, but they also represent considerable value and are fairly rare for a Visa Infinite card.
We love that both cards offer no FX fees, travel insurance, and other similar perks. But, from a competition standpoint and for most Canadians, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card is the stronger pick. The welcome bonus alone can be worth $350, the annual fee is $90 lower, and 6 complimentary airport lounge passes add tangible travel value. If you already spend heavily at Sobeys-banner grocers, the 3x earn rate seals the deal.
On the other side of the battle, we’re fans of Wealthsimple’s no-fuss rewards system, letting you earn 2% across the board, as well as the occasional cash back boost of up to a 10% return. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card earns its place for a specific type of cardholder: someone who wants zero mental math, already banks with Wealthsimple (or can route their paycheque there to waive the fee), and spends broadly across categories where Scene+ only delivers 1x.

Wealthsimple vs. Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +: Frequently Asked Questions
Which card is better: Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + or Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +*?
Does the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card charge foreign transaction fees?
No. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card charges no foreign transaction fees, making it a solid option for Canadians who travel or shop in foreign currencies.
Does the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card charge foreign transaction fees?
What is the minimum income to qualify for these cards?
Both cards require a minimum personal income of $60,000 or a household income of $100,000, the standard Visa Infinite requirements. The Wealthsimple card also qualifies applicants with $250,000 in Wealthsimple assets or at least $15,000 in annual card spend.
How do Scene+ points work with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card?
Scene+ points are generally worth 1 cent each. With the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card, you earn up to 4 points per $1 on travel booked through Scene+ Travel, 3 points at Sobeys-affiliated grocers, 2 points on dining, transit, and entertainment, and 1 point everywhere else. Points redeem for travel, groceries, dining, gift cards, or statement credits.

Apply with confidence — no impact on your credit scoreⓘApply with confidenceCheck whether your application will be approved before you submit it, with no impact on your credit score*When you apply for a personal American Express Credit Card, we will tell you whether you are eligible without affecting your credit score. The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.
New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:
Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.
This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.
Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.
To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.
The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.
You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.
Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.
Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.
You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.
The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.
Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.
