Credit card rewards are a fantastic way to get a little something back every time you make a purchase, whether you’re shopping for groceries or booking a hotel for a trip abroad.

Additionally, many cards offer a valuable range of perks and benefits that can improve your travel experiences, keep your purchases safe, and save you even more money.

Two travel cards, two very different philosophies. The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card rewards you with Scene+ points, 6 airport lounge passes, and a solid welcome bonus. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card keeps it dead simple: 2% cash back on everything, no foreign transaction fees, no tracking required. Both skip FX fees, which alone puts them ahead of most cards in Canada. The question is which one actually fits how you spend.

In this head-to-head, we’ll look at how these two cards, earning different styles of rewards, compare to one another across the following 6 categories:

Welcome Bonus

To begin our comparison, we’ll look at the welcome bonus offered by each of these credit cards since these are often a way to jumpstart your rewards account balance.

Carte Visa Infinite + Wealthsimple

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card

In terms of welcome offers, the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card isn’t currently offering new card members any bonus.

This is not surprising, since the Wealthsimple card is fairly recent and there is still a waitlist of people who want to sign up.

Comparatif : Carte Visa Infinite Passeport + Banque Scotia vs Carte Mastercard BMO AIR MILES World Elite - Carte Visa Infinite +* Passeportᴹᴰ Banque Scotia

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card

On the other side of this comparison, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card typically provides a strong welcome offer to new cardholders.

These offers do fluctuate, but as an example, the card is currently offering up to 35,000 bonus Scene+ points, broken down as follows:

  • Earn 25,000 Scene+ points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months as a cardholder
  • Earn an annual bonus of 10,000 Scene+ points if you spend at least $40,000 on the card annually

Advantage: Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +*

For this first category, we’re crowning the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card as the winner since it offers new cardholders the chance to earn up to 35,000 Scene+ points, which are worth upwards of $350 when redeemed for travel, groceries, and more.

Comparatively, the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card is not currently offering new card members any welcome offer, though it would not be surprising to see that change once they’ve moved through the waitlist of people who want to sign up for the card. To see how the Passport stacks up against another major travel rival, check out our head-to-head comparison between the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card and the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card.

Minimum Income

Carte Visa Infinite + Wealthsimple

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card

The minimum income requirements for the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card are as follows:

  • $60,000 personal income, or
  • $100,000 household income, or
  • $250,000 total savings and investments with Wealthsimple, or
  • At least $15,000 annual credit card spend
Comparatif : Carte Visa Infinite Passeport + Banque Scotia vs Carte Mastercard BMO AIR MILES World Elite - Carte Visa Infinite +* Passeportᴹᴰ Banque Scotia

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card

The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card has the following minimum income requirements:

  • $60,000 individual income, or
  • $100,000 household income, or
  • Assets under management of $250,000 or more

Draw

In terms of minimum income, both cards have essentially identical requirements, entirely in line with what we expect to see for a Visa Infinite + card. Given this, we’re calling this category a tie.

Annual Fee

Carte Visa Infinite + Wealthsimple

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card

The annual fee for the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card comes to $240/year. For residents of Quebec, this fee is paid in full upfront, whereas residents in the rest of Canada are charged a monthly fee of $20.

Notably, this fee can be waived if you have assets of at least $100,000 with Wealthsimple or have at least $4,000 in qualifying direct deposits going into your Wealthsimple Chequing Account each month.

Comparatif : Carte Visa Infinite Passeport + Banque Scotia vs Carte Mastercard BMO AIR MILES World Elite - Carte Visa Infinite +* Passeportᴹᴰ Banque Scotia

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card

The annual fee for the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card is $150, however this fee can be waived if you have an eligible Scotiabank bank account, such as the Ultimate Package chequing account or the Preferred Package chequing account.

Advantage: Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +*

We think that the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card is the winner of this category since it comes with a lower annual fee of $150 (versus the $240 fee requested by the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card), and it offers more accessible ways to have this fee waived entirely.

That said, if you meet the requirements to have the annual fee waived on the Wealthsimple card, then this category would certainly be a tie.

Earning Points

The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card and the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card earn two different reward types: cash back and Scene+ points.

Depending on your preferences for rewards, each of these options has a lot of potential value, so let’s take a look at each program to see what we can expect from spending with these cards.

Carte Visa Infinite + Wealthsimple

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card

With the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card, you earn a base rate of 2% cash back on all your purchases.

Additionally, Wealthsimple has started featuring limited-time targeted offers of up to 10% cash back with select merchants.

For example, during a recent promotion, eligible cardholders saw the following « cash back boost » offers:

  • 10% at Turo
  • 4% at Patagonia
  • 7% at Hotels.com
  • 3% at Walmart
  • 6% at Dyson
  • 4% at GAP
  • 5% at Aesop
  • 4% at SONOS
  • 4% at Simons
  • 5% at Chewy
  • 4% at Audible

Plus, accessing your earned cash back is easy since it’s automatically deposited into your Wealthsimple Chequing Account every month.

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card

For those with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card, you can earn up to 4 Scene+ points per $1 spent:

CategoryPoints
Flights, hotels and car rentals booked through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia4
Sobeys, Safeway, Foodland, participating IGA, and more3
Dining out and eligible entertainment and transit purchases2
Everything else1

Given that Scene+ points can be redeemed for 1 cent each, these earning rates represent a 4%, 3%, 2%, and 1% return, respectively.

Draw

For the earning category, we think that both cards are pretty well matched.

With the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card earning cash back and the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card earning Scene+ points, we can compare the value of their earning rates to see how they stack up.

Since Scene+ points are generally worth 1 cent each, the earning rates with the Scotiabank card are worth upwards of 4%, 3%, 2%, and 1%. Comparing this to the 2% base earning rate of the Wealthsimple card, plus its potential for cash back rates as high as 10%, the Scotia card pulls ahead for dedicated Sobeys shoppers and travellers who consistently book through Scene+ Travel. For everyone else, Wealthsimple’s earning rate is simply higher on most of what they actually buy.

Redeeming Points

As we mentioned in the earlier sections, the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card and the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card each have different reward types, with one earning cash back and the other earning Scene+ points.

Given this, there’s certain to be a difference in how cardholders can access and enjoy their accumulated rewards, so let’s see how this plays out.

Carte Visa Infinite + Wealthsimple

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card

Redeeming the cash back earned with your Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card is incredibly easy since you actually don’t have to do anything at all.

As part of having the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card, you’re required to also sign up for a Wealthsimple Chequing Account, and you have full control over when and how you redeem your cash back. You can transfer it at any time to any of your Wealthsimple accounts, for maximum flexibility.

Comparatif : Carte Visa Infinite Passeport + Banque Scotia vs Carte Mastercard BMO AIR MILES World Elite - Carte Visa Infinite +* Passeportᴹᴰ Banque Scotia

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card

Redeeming with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card is a bit more complicated, but for this effort, you get to enjoy several different redemption options.

Once you’ve accumulated some Scene+ points, you can redeem them in the following ways:

Draw

With the redemption category, it’s a bit difficult to choose a winner since a lot of it comes down to personal preference.

On the one hand, cash back is wonderfully straightforward (I mean, who doesn’t like a cash bonus to lower their expenses each month?), but on the other hand, Scene+ lets you pick and choose and change where you redeem, and it lets you save up for bigger redemptions and enjoy travel without ever exchanging actual money.

As noted above, Scene+ points can typically be redeemed for 1 cent each, giving the Scotiabank card the higher, consistent earning rate. That said, Wealthsimple’s earning rate of 2% is comparable to the Scotiabank card’s rate on everything except for eligible groceries and travel expenses.

Additionally, Wealthsimple’s new promotional rates of up to 10% cash back with select merchants are quite compelling, and we think it’s likely that the list of eligible merchants will expand, making it a feature that’s certainly worth watching.

All this is to say that we’re calling this category a draw since both cards offer similar redemption value, and the best card is ultimately whichever one earns the rewards you prefer to redeem.

Perks and Benefits

Carte Visa Infinite + Wealthsimple

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card

The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card offers cardholders the following perks:

Comparatif : Carte Visa Infinite Passeport + Banque Scotia vs Carte Mastercard BMO AIR MILES World Elite - Carte Visa Infinite +* Passeportᴹᴰ Banque Scotia

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card

With the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card, you can enjoy the following perks:

Advantage: Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +*

In terms of perks and benefits, we find that both of these cards are excellent and also very similar.

With both the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card and the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card, we’re especially fond of the no-FX-fees feature since this is quite rare with Canadian cards, and it can save you a nice chunk of money when travelling.

However, we think the Scotiabank card comes out just ahead in this category thanks to its additional offer of 6 complimentary airport lounge passes. Not only are these wonderful to have when travelling, but they also represent considerable value and are fairly rare for a Visa Infinite card.

Bottom Line

Now that we’ve made it through all 6 of our comparison categories, it’s time to sort out which card is the ultimate winner: the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card or the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card.

We love that both cards offer no FX fees, travel insurance, and other similar perks. But, from a competition standpoint and for most Canadians, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card is the stronger pick. The welcome bonus alone can be worth $350, the annual fee is $90 lower, and 6 complimentary airport lounge passes add tangible travel value. If you already spend heavily at Sobeys-banner grocers, the 3x earn rate seals the deal.

On the other side of the battle, we’re fans of Wealthsimple’s no-fuss rewards system, letting you earn 2% across the board, as well as the occasional cash back boost of up to a 10% return. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card earns its place for a specific type of cardholder: someone who wants zero mental math, already banks with Wealthsimple (or can route their paycheque there to waive the fee), and spends broadly across categories where Scene+ only delivers 1x.

Since both the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card and the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card are valuable cards with similar features and earn rates, you just need to decide if you prefer cash back or Scene+ points, and you’re ready to start earning!

Which card is better: Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + or Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +*?

It depends on the rewards you prefer. The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card wins on welcome bonus, annual fee, and airport lounge access. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card is the stronger pick if you want simple, automatic cash back at a flat 2% rate with no tracking required.

No. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card charges no foreign transaction fees, making it a solid option for Canadians who travel or shop in foreign currencies.

Does the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card charge foreign transaction fees?

No. The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card waives the standard 2.5% foreign transaction fee, which is one of its standout perks for travellers.

Can the annual fee be waived on either card?

Yes on both cards. The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite + Card waives its $240 annual fee if you hold $100,000 in assets with Wealthsimple or make $4,000/month in qualifying direct deposits. The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card waives its $150 fee with an eligible Scotiabank chequing account like the Ultimate Package or Preferred Package.

What is the minimum income to qualify for these cards?

Both cards require a minimum personal income of $60,000 or a household income of $100,000, the standard Visa Infinite requirements. The Wealthsimple card also qualifies applicants with $250,000 in Wealthsimple assets or at least $15,000 in annual card spend.

How do Scene+ points work with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card?

Scene+ points are generally worth 1 cent each. With the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card, you earn up to 4 points per $1 on travel booked through Scene+ Travel, 3 points at Sobeys-affiliated grocers, 2 points on dining, transit, and entertainment, and 1 point everywhere else. Points redeem for travel, groceries, dining, gift cards, or statement credits.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.
