Loyalty Programs of Major Gas Stations

Before choosing a credit card, you first need to understand the loyalty program associated with each brand. Here’s an overview of the main players in Canada in 2026.

Shell + Scene+: Big Change in 2026

After more than 30 years of partnership with AIR MILES, Shell Canada joined the Scene+ program, effective March 3, 2026, in Alberta, and starting May 26, 2026, in the rest of Canada. This is the most significant change in the world of gas station loyalty programs in a long time. To learn more, read our full article on the new Shell + Scene+ partnership starting March 2026.

Reward Program: Scene+ (via Shell Go+)

  • 1 Scene+ point per liter: On all types of Shell fuel.
  • 1 Scene+ point per dollar: On eligible convenience store purchases and car washes.
  • Redemption: 1,000 Scene+ points are equivalent to a $10 discount on fuel, car wash, or convenience store purchases, instantly at the pump or in-store.
  • Shell Go+ (app): By linking your Scene+ account to the Shell Go+ app, you unlock 10% bonus points on regular gasoline and 2x more points on V-Power.

Scotia Bank and Tangerine cards linked to Shell Go+ give an instant discount of up to 10¢ per liter (including the value of the points). In addition, CAA members (CAA-Quebec, AMA, BCAA) retain their 3¢/liter discount, which can be combined with Scene+ rewards.

Ultramar, Chevron, Pioneer — Journie Rewards

Reward Program: Journie Rewards

Journie Rewards is the program of the Parkland group, which operates the Ultramar, Chevron, Pioneer, Fas Gas, ON the RUN, and Marché Express brands in Canada. However, in Quebec, Ultramar stations associated with a Couche-Tard convenience store do not participate in the Journie program. For full details, consult our ultimate guide to Journie Rewards.

  • 1 point per liter: Of gasoline.
  • 2 points per dollar: On convenience store purchases.
  • 300-point cycle: At 150 points, a 3¢/liter discount on a fill-up. At 300 points, a 7¢/liter discount on a fill-up (applicable on a maximum of 100 liters).
  • Aeroplan Link: By linking your Journie account to Aeroplan, you receive 300 Aeroplan points at the end of each 300-Journie point cycle, in addition to fuel discounts.

Without a CIBC card, you can still provide your Aeroplan number directly at the station to earn 1 Aeroplan point per 3 liters of gas and 1 Aeroplan point per dollar at the convenience store.

With the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card linked to the Journie program, you save up to 7¢/liter: 3¢ with each fill-up, and 7¢ at the end of each 300-point cycle. In addition, by adding the 4% cash back the card offers on gas station purchases, it’s one of the most advantageous combinations on the market.

Couche-Tard — CAA Quebec Dollars

Reward Program: CAA Quebec Dollars (CAA members only)

By presenting your CAA Quebec membership card at participating Couche-Tard stations, you save 3¢/liter on gas and earn 3% in CAA Dollars on all your in-station purchases. In addition, with the CAA-Quebec credit card, an additional 2% cash back is added to all your purchases. For more details, consult our loyalty programs guide.

Costco Gas — No Loyalty Program

Costco gas stations do not have their own loyalty program. Indeed, their advantage is structural: the price per liter is generally lower than elsewhere thanks to the membership model. However, two cards stand out for gas at Costco:

  • CIBC Costco Mastercard: 3% cash back on gas purchases at Costco.
  • Capital One Costco Executive Mastercard: 2% rebate on all Costco purchases, including gas, in addition to the annual 2% rebate for Executive members.

Choosing the Right Credit Card

Combining the station’s loyalty program with the right credit card is where true value is created. Indeed, two approaches are possible: align with the brand you frequent, or choose a card that earns the maximum in the “gas station” category no matter where you fill up. To go further, read our article saving on gas in Canada: cards and programs.

By Brand

  • Shell (as of May 26, 2026): Scotia Bank Scene+ cards give up to 10¢/liter in total value. In addition, the Scotia Bank American Express Gold Card offers 3 Scene+ points per dollar on gas, stackable with Shell Go+ points.
  • Petro-Canada: The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card gives 20% more Petro-Points and an instant 3¢/liter discount. Furthermore, the Triangle World Elite Mastercard can give up to 5¢/liter in CT Money.
  • ESSO and Mobil: The PC Insiders World Elite Mastercard® goes up to 70 PC Optimum points per liter at ESSO, which is the best PC point accumulation on the market at the pump.
  • Ultramar / Chevron / Pioneer (Journie): The CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card offers 4% cash back on gas in addition to Journie discounts, for a total of up to 7¢/liter.
  • Couche-Tard: The CAA-Quebec credit card gives an additional 2% in CAA Dollars, complementing the 3¢/liter discount reserved for CAA members.

By Spending Category

If you prefer a card that earns well at the station regardless of the brand, here are the best options in 2026:

  • CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card: 4% cash back on all gas station purchases, the highest rate in its category in Canada.
  • Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite+* Card: 4% cash back on gas stations and groceries, one of the best cash back cards overall.

Conclusion

The landscape of gas station loyalty programs has evolved significantly in recent years, and 2026 further accelerates this movement. Indeed, Esso Extra has disappeared, Shell is switching to Scene+, and AIR MILES is becoming BMO Blue Rewards.

Thus, if you haven’t updated your cards and linked accounts, you’re probably accumulating less than before without knowing it. In conclusion, the rule remains simple: choose a brand, combine its loyalty program with the right credit card, and you’ll get double the benefit with every fill-up.

Points and Miles Gas Station Canada – Frequently Asked Questions

Does Esso Extra still exist in Canada?

No. The Esso Extra program ended on January 17, 2022. Since January 18, 2022, ESSO and Mobil stations operate exclusively with PC Optimum. If you had an unconverted Esso Extra balance before April 30, 2022, those points have expired. To earn points at ESSO today, all you need is a PC Optimum card or the app.

Does Shell still accept AIR MILES in 2026?

Not for much longer. In Alberta, AIR MILES has not been accepted at Shell since March 3, 2026. However, in the rest of Canada, the transition will take place on May 26, 2026. After this date, Shell will fully switch to Scene+. Furthermore, your AIR MILES balance remains valid with other partners and will be converted to BMO Blue Rewards in summer 2026.

Which gas station earns the most points?

It depends on your credit card and the program you prioritize. For cash back, the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card (4% at the station) combined with Journie at Ultramar is very competitive. In addition, for PC Optimum points at ESSO, the PC Insiders World Elite Mastercard® goes up to 70 points per liter. Finally, for Scene+, Shell becomes the preferred option starting May 26, 2026, with Scotia Bank cards.

How does the Petro-Points program work?

You earn 10 Petro-Points per liter of gas and 10 points per dollar at the convenience store, via the Petro-Canada app (no more plastic card since 2021). Thus, every 1,000 points is worth a $1 discount. In addition, by linking your RBC card, you save 3¢/liter instantly and earn 20% more points.

Can loyalty and credit cards be combined?

Yes, that’s precisely where maximum value is created. Indeed, you present your loyalty card or the station’s app, then you pay with your credit card. Thus, the two accumulations are independent. For example, at Shell as of May 26, 2026: 1 Scene+ point per liter with Shell Go+ and an additional 3 Scene+ points per dollar if you pay with the Scotia Bank American Express Gold Card.

What is the Journie Rewards program?

Journie Rewards is the program of the Parkland group, available at Ultramar, Chevron, Pioneer, Fas Gas, ON the RUN, and Marché Express stations. You earn 1 point per liter and 2 points per dollar at the convenience store. In addition, at each 300-point cycle, you get discounts on fuel (3¢ at 150 points, 7¢ at 300 points) or 300 Aeroplan points if you have linked the two programs.

Is there a loyalty program at Costco gas?

No, Costco does not have its own loyalty program at the pump. Indeed, its advantage is a structurally lower price per liter than elsewhere. However, to maximize your gas purchases at Costco, the CIBC Costco Mastercard offers 3% cash back, and the Capital One Costco Executive card gives a 2% rebate on all Costco purchases.
