Event Perks: Credit Card Presales and Points

Heading out for a big event is a wonderful experience that many of us look forward to doing a few times a year. Whether it’s a concert with your favourite artist, an afternoon game of tennis or baseball, or a massive weekend-long festival, these experiences make for some of the best memories.

When it comes to these incredible opportunities, something that people may not know is that the right credit card can help you experience top events with points and perks, potentially saving you some money along the way.

Credit cards almost never pay for an event ticket outright. What they buy is access: presale windows ahead of the general public, reserved ticket blocks, priority entrance lanes, and on-site lounges. Points then do the heavy lifting on the flight and the hotel around the event, which is usually where the real money goes. Here is how that plays out at the biggest events in Canada and the US, and which cards open which doors.

Credit Card Points and Perks

Credit card points and perks are a fantastic way to improve your access and enjoyment of lots of different events, but what exactly do we mean when we refer to these points and perks?

In the context of events, credit card perks fall into a few categories:

Pre-event perks: This includes access to cardholder-only ticket presales, reserved blocks of tickets, and exclusive events.
Off-site/related perks: These perks can include special add-on events and spaces that are related to the primary event like exclusive parties, lounge areas, special dining opportunities, and more.
On-site perks: This category is for perks that you can enjoy at the event, such as priority entrance, VIP areas, special giveaways, and discounts.

Note that the credit card perks that are available are typically tied in with the financial institution that’s sponsoring or partnering with the event.

In terms of using points to cover costs at events, this is fairly limited; however, we will go over a few options for redeeming points to save on concerts, sports events, and other special events. Plus, we’ll share a few useful ways to redeem points to help cover the cost of flights and hotels when you’re travelling for an event.

Amazing Events in Canada and the US

There are so many events every year across Canada and the US, including concerts, sports, theatre, music festivals, and more, and with the right credit card, you can enjoy some extra perks and maybe even some extra savings.

To make sure you’re set up to get the most from every event you attend this year, let’s look at some of the best events to experience with credit card perks and points, as well as strategies for using points to save on related expenses.

F1 Grand Prix Events

Each year during the F1 Grand Prix season having an American Express card in your wallet can snag you some race-related perks thanks to the fact that Amex is one of the official partners of multiple races around the world.

F1 Grand Prix du Canada

In Canada, the F1 Grand Prix du Canada in Montreal takes place on l’île Notre-Dame, with world class driving on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. One change to plan around: starting in 2027 the race moves from June to May, and the exact date has not been confirmed yet.

To make the most of this event, attendees can enjoy a range of credit card perks both on-site and around the city with eligible Amex cards:

On-site perks: Amex Racing Club, Amex Pit Stop, complimentary race radios, Amex Trackside Lounge, and mobile device charging stations.
Off-site perks: Maison Amex Montreal, access to exclusive dining reservations, and savings through Amex Shop Small promotions.

Check out our Guide to F1 Grand Prix du Canada for in-depth information on all these cardholder benefits and more.

F1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas and Miami

If you want to catch even more racing during the F1 season, you can book a trip to the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix scheduled for November 19 to 21, 2026, or to the Miami Grand Prix in the spring.

Similarly to the Montreal Grand Prix, these weekend events are also partnered with American Express, so race fans can use their eligible Amex cards to access similar perks to the Canadian event, such as:

Amex Racing Club
Amex Pit Stop
Complimentary race radios to follow the live action and commentary
Amex Trackside Lounge
Priority Lane entrance
…and more

Attendees can expect to see key competitors such as Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and many more.

Plus if you’re looking for somewhere to cool off, the hundreds of museums and art galleries and the thousands of incredible restaurants and bars give you lots of options for respite from the heat.

National Bank Open and Piknic Électronik

National Bank sponsors a cluster of events that rarely show up in national roundups: the National Bank Open in tennis, plus Igloofest, Piknic Électronik and Montréal en Lumière.

The National Bank Open ran August 2 to 13 in 2026, with the women’s draw at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto and the men’s at IGA Stadium in Montreal. The 2027 edition is scheduled for July 31 to August 12. Piknic Électronik, meanwhile, is still going: its 23rd season runs 20 Sunday events across Parc Jean-Drapeau through October 18, with its own Banque Nationale stage at the Jardin Le Petit Prince.

If you are weighing a National Bank card, the Platinum is the one the 2026 Piknic promotion was attached to, and the World Elite is the bank’s travel flagship.

4. This coverage applies to purchases and rentals charged in part to the card, except out-of-province medical/hospital insurance for which the travel arrangements need not be charged to the card, and lost or delayed luggage insurance where all transportation costs must be charged to the card. This coverage applies to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or dependent children when they (spouse and/or dependent children) travel with the primary cardholder. Extended warranty coverage applies to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, as long as the manufacturer’s warranty is valid in Canada. Certain conditions and restrictions apply. For more information and for details of your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate associated with your card.

5. Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. Refer to the credit card terms and conditions.

6. Subject to credit approval by National Bank.

7. The amount of points earned on grocery and restaurant purchases depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, regardless of the purchase category. You will earn 2 points for every dollar in eligible grocery and restaurant purchases until a total of $1,000 in gross monthly purchases is charged to the account. After that, you will earn 1.5 points per dollar in eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The total gross monthly amount is calculated based on your monthly billing period. Grocery purchases include any purchase made at a store that primarily sells food, i.e., grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, greengrocer or specialty food store. Ready-to-eat meal services and meal delivery services are eligible. This definition excludes purchases made at retail stores and big box stores whose core business is the sale of non-food items. Certain merchants may sell products and services that appear identical or similar to those sold by eligible merchants, or may be separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified in different categories by Mastercard. For purchases at other merchants, you will only earn regular rewards points. Restaurant purchases include purchases at a restaurant, fast food restaurant, bar, nightclub or pub. For a full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the terms and conditions of the À la carte Rewards Plan^®.

8. To earn 1.5 points per dollar in purchases, you will need to purchase gas or an electrical vehicle charge from a service station or from certain big box stores. Certain merchants may sell products and services that appear identical or similar to those sold by eligible merchants, or may be separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified in different categories by Mastercard. For purchases at other merchants, you will only earn regular rewards points. For a full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the terms and conditions of the À la carte Rewards Plan^®.

9. Recurring bill payments are defined as monthly or regular payments automatically charged by a merchant to your National Bank Platinum Mastercard credit card. Not all merchants offer recurring bill payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Certain payments therefore may not entitle you to earn more points.

10. To earn 1.5 points per dollar in purchases, you must make your eligible purchases via the À la carte Travel^™ Agency section of our À la carte Rewards^™ site.

11. The device must have been purchased using your National Bank Platinum Mastercard credit card, or your phone plan must be paid via recurring payments charged to your National Bank Platinum credit card starting September 1, 2022. For complete terms and conditions, please consult the insurance certificate associated with your card.

Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan^® terms and conditions document.
These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan^® terms and conditions document.
Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte Travel^TM agency section of our À la carte Rewards^TM site.
For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. Osheaga

Known for its amazing musical line-ups and high energy, Osheaga is another Montreal music event worth checking out. It runs three days at the height of the summer in Parc Jean-Drapeau on Sainte-Hélène’s Island. The 2026 edition took place July 31 to August 2, and the 2027 dates are set for July 30 to August 1.

With an eligible Amex credit card, you can enjoy Front Of The Line Amex Presale tickets, a stack of tickets reserved exclusively for Amex cardholders, and Priority Lane access to enter the event.

Plus, thanks to its convenient location within Montreal, you can easily explore more of the city’s incredible culture, getting to know neighbourhoods like the Plateau and Mile End while staying up even later enjoying the incredible nightlife.

Mirvish Theatre Performances

Theatre-lovers can use their eligible American Express card to enjoy special ticket access to Mirvish Theatre productions across Toronto. Using Amex’s Front of the Line and Reserved Tickets features, cardholders can grab some of the best seats in the house before they even go on sale to the general public.

The 2026/27 Mirvish season is one of the largest in the company’s history: 24 shows across four downtown Toronto stages, with a main subscription season of seven productions. Titles include Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, 13 Going on 30: The Musical, Salesman in China, and Inside the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, built around the songs of Gordon Lightfoot.

Toronto International Film Festival

TIFF runs September 10 to 20, 2026 across downtown Toronto, and it is the one major event on this list where the card perks belong to Visa rather than American Express. Visa is marking its 25th year as a TIFF Major Partner.

Eligible Visa cardholders get an early ticket pre-sale window ahead of the general public, and Visa Infinite cardholders get the on-site benefits:

The Visa Infinite Priority Line and lounge at the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre
The Visa Infinite Terrace at Roy Thomson Hall
The Visa Infinite Studio across the street from the Princess of Wales, with live music, a portrait studio, and complimentary drinks and snacks

Any Visa Infinite card issued in Canada unlocks the Visa Infinite tier of these benefits, which makes TIFF one of the rare event perks you can reach with a mid-range travel card instead of a premium one.

1 This offer only applies to new applications for an RBC Avion Visa Infinite or RBC Avion Visa Platinum credit card (each, an “Eligible Credit Card”) received between “August 13, 2026” and “November 25, 2026” (“Offer Period”) and approved by Royal Bank of Canada (“Royal Bank”) subject to the conditions below. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the Eligible Credit Card account, as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account transferring to an Eligible Credit Card account during the Offer Period, are not eligible for the offer.

35,000 welcome Avion points (“Welcome Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty (60) days after your application has been approved, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Welcome points are credited to your account, “good standing” meaning that your Eligible Credit Card account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive credit card account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status.

You will receive 20,000 bonus Avion points (“Bonus Points”) if a total of $5,000 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) are posted to your Eligible Credit Card account within the first six (6) months from your Eligible Credit Card account opening date (“Period”). The Bonus Points will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty days (60) after you reach $5,000 in Qualifying Transactions, provided your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Bonus Points are credited to your account.

Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges and fees. Credits for returns and adjustments posted to your Eligible Credit Card account during the Period will reduce the amount of your Qualifying Transactions. The Qualifying Transaction Amount is based on the transaction posting date of each Qualifying Transaction, not the transaction date. This means that transactions that take place prior to the last day of the Period will not be considered for the Qualifying Transaction Amount if they have not yet been posted or processed by the merchant, the payment network (Visa) or Royal Bank by the last day of the Period.

15,000 additional Avion points (“Anniversary Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks after the one- year anniversary of your account opening, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Anniversary Points are credited to your account.

If you close or change your Eligible Credit Card Account for another type of RBC Royal Bank credit card before the Welcome Points, the Bonus Points and/or the Anniversary Points have been credited to your account, you may lose the benefit of this offer. This offer may not be combined or used in conjunction with any other offer. Royal Bank reserves the right to cancel, modify or withdraw this offer at any time without notice, even after your application has been approved, including if we suspect that you may be manipulating or abusing it, or engaging in any suspicious or fraudulent activity, as determined by Royal Bank in its sole discretion. For complete terms and conditions that apply to the Avion Rewards Program, please visit www.avionrewards.com or call 1-800-769-2512.

^Point redemptions for flights under the Air Travel Redemption Schedule start at 7,500 points for a short-haul one-way Economy Class flight priced at no more than $175 (and start at 15,000 points for a short-haul round-trip Economy Class flight priced at no more than $350). The traveller is responsible for all applicable taxes, administration fees and surcharges. To learn more, including guidelines regarding redeeming points for a Business Class flight, visit www.avionrewards.com/fr/travel/.

2 Avion points are earned on qualifying net purchases only; they are not earned on cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant) interest charges or fees, and credits for returns and adjustments will reduce or cancel the points earned by the amounts originally charged.

4 To participate in this offer, you must have an RBC debit card or a credit card which is issued by Royal Bank of Canada (excluding RBC commercial credit cards) (“RBC Card”). RBC business clients will only be able to link up to two (2) RBC business credit cards and one (1) RBC business debit card to a Petro-Points card.

You must be enrolled in RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app in order to link your RBC Card to your Petro-Points card. Card linking may take up to 2 business days to process before savings and bonus points can be applied to purchases. A linked RBC Card means an RBC Card linked to a Petro-Points Account. Your linked RBC Card acts as your Petro-Points card. You will automatically earn Petro-Points when you pay for qualifying purchases with your linked RBC Card at Petro-Canada locations and you do not need to swipe your Petro-Points card before you pay. You can redeem your Petro-Points at Petro-Canada using your linked RBC Card. Each time you use your linked RBC Card to purchase any grade of gasoline, or diesel, at a Petro-Canada location, you will save three cents ($0.03) per litre at the time of the transaction.

6 Each time you use your linked Eligible Avion Rewards Credit Card to pay for purchases at a Petro-Canada Location, you will earn a bonus of twenty percent (20%) more Avion points than you normally earn for every $1 in purchases in accordance with the Avion Rewards Terms and Conditions. Please allow up to ninety (90) days from the date the transaction is posted on your credit card statement for the bonus points to be deposited into Avion Rewards account. Authorized Users are excluded from earning Avion points bonus.

6 Each time you use your eligible linked Avion Rewards credit card to pay for purchases at a Petro-Canada location, you will receive a bonus of twenty percent (20%) more Avion points than you would normally receive for each dollar of purchase, in accordance with the terms of the Avion Rewards program. Please allow up to ninety (90) days from the date the transaction is posted to your credit card statement for your bonus points to be deposited into your Avion Rewards account. Authorized users cannot earn bonus Avion points.

12 You will earn 1.25 Avion points for every dollar spent when you use your RBC Avion Visa Infinite card to pay for travel-related purchases made at merchants classified by Visa’s “Merchant Category Code” (“MCC”) as “travel”, which may include: airlines, accommodations, tour operators, cruise lines, travel agencies and car rental companies. Even though some merchants may sell travel products/services, purchases made at these locations may not necessarily qualify for the 1.25 Avion points per dollar if the merchant is not classified with a “travel” MCC. Also, merchants that are not classified by a “travel” MCC may be located on the premises of merchants that are classified with a “travel” MCC, and purchases made at these locations may not qualify for this added benefit. For more details, please refer to the Avion Rewards Terms and Conditions at: https://www.avionrewards.com/terms-and-conditions/index.html

14 The term “redeem” means using your Be Well points to pay, or partially pay, for eligible purchases using your Be Well card at participating Rexall locations according to the instructions provided by the cashier, the point-of-sale terminal or any other payment processing device. You can redeem the Be Well points you earn for eligible purchases—see section 5 of the Be Well terms (available at https://www.letsbewell.ca/terms-conditions)—or for another purpose that we may provide from time to time.

You must have joined the Be Well program and registered your Be Well card, or otherwise called customer service, to redeem Be Well points. Any Be Well points earned on a Be Well card will remain the property of the Be Well administrator until the enrollment and registration process is complete.

You must redeem a minimum of 25,000 Be Well points at any time, which are worth $10. Be Well points can be redeemed in $10 increments, up to a maximum of $200 (500,000 Be Well points) in a single transaction. A maximum of 500,000 Be Well points can be redeemed within a 24-hour period.

In Ontario and British Columbia, Be Well points cannot be redeemed for prescription drugs. As the laws of each province and territory may change from time to time, you are encouraged to consult your pharmacist for more information in this regard.

Be Well points you earn when you make a purchase cannot be redeemed immediately for that same purchase. They can only be redeemed for a future eligible purchase that must be made at least 12 hours after earning those Be Well points.

Staying downtown during the festival means competing for hotel rooms in the busiest week of Toronto’s year. Our Toronto hotel, flight and lounge reviews cover which properties are bookable on points and what they cost.

Enjoy Perks at Other Events

Beyond the experiences above, there are thousands more concerts, festivals, and sports events you can attend. Many of them, or the venues that host them, are sponsored by or partnered with credit card companies, which opens the door to card-related perks and savings.

Perks

As we saw in the experiences listed above, many venues offer priority access with an eligible credit card from financial institutions like American Express, BMO, and RBC.

These perks typically line up with whichever institution is sponsoring or partnering with the event. For example, RBC credit card holders enjoy a separate entrance at the RBC Amphitheatre in Toronto and BMO credit card holders can use the special BMO priority entrance at BMO Field, home field for the Toronto FC. Scotiabank holds the largest of these deals in the country: a 20-year, $800 million agreement with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment signed in 2017, which is why the Air Canada Centre became Scotiabank Arena in 2018, and why Scotiabank is the Official Bank of the NHL in Canada. Its venue benefits run through the Scotia Perks programme.

American Express partners with a number of events, so you’ll often see their signs ushering eligible credit card holders to a specific entrance with a (generally) shorter line. Examples of events include eligible F1 Grand Prix weekends and Rogers Stadium in Toronto.

As also mentioned above, select credit cards also get you early access to tickets for many of your favourite concerts, festivals, and events. This can be through Amex Ticket Presales under the Amex Experiences umbrella, or through RBCxMusic, which lets eligible credit card members access special tickets and presales for select events.

One detail worth knowing: Front Of The Line is an American Express network programme rather than an Amex-issued-card programme. The Scotiabank Gold American Express^® Card carries Front Of The Line presale access to concerts, theatre productions, restaurants and special events, so you can reach the same presales through Scotiabank instead of Amex itself. Check the eligibility requirements on the card page before applying, since this issuer is not the easiest approval on the market.

Additionally, Mastercard Priceless offers eligible Mastercard holders preferred tickets, unique experiences, and discounts on popular events like Cirque du Soleil.

When the presale window has already closed, or the event sold out before you got near it, the resale market is the fallback. The same card logic still applies: put the purchase on whichever card earns the most, and if the event is outside Canada, use a card with no foreign exchange fee so you are not paying 2.5% on top of an already inflated ticket.

Other Ways to Save

With Marriott Bonvoy Moments

A lesser-known way to redeem points for event access is through Marriott Bonvoy Moments. This program lets you redeem your Marriott Bonvoy points for special events around the world.

These events include concerts, professional sports, Michelin dining, and more. Recent events that were available for redemption in Canada include watching the SailGP race in Halifax from a boat at the finish line, tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and premium access to the Memorial Cup in Kelowna, BC.

Some Marriott Bonvoy Moments can be redeemed for a set price, while others are put up for auction. Additionally, you can also sometimes find “1-point Drops,” which give a few lucky members an incredible and unique experience for only 1 Marriott Bonvoy point!

Airline loyalty programs

If you’re travelling to an event by plane, using points to save on your flight is a great way to keep your costs in check.

Depending where you’re travelling to and from, there’s lots of airline loyalty programs to choose from. Popular options in Canada include Aeroplan, Flying Blue, WestJet Rewards, British Airways Club, and VIPorter.

The easiest and fastest way to earn these points is with co-branded credit cards like the following:

Hotel loyalty programs

Spending a night or two around an event can make the experience more special and more convenient. Whether you’re travelling from far away for the event or just treating yourself to a hotel stay to save yourself the post-event commute home, there’s a few ways you can make this expense more affordable.

With hotel loyalty programs like Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors, you can earn points on your stays or with co-branded credit cards and then redeem these for free nights at properties around the world.

Additionally, the Marriott Bonvoy^® American Express^®* Card and the Marriott Bonvoy^® Business American Express^®* Card both give you added perks like an annual free night certificate and strong welcome offers, making them a compelling addition to any rewards-inclined wallet.

Flexible travel points

If you don’t have airline or hotel loyalty points (or if you don’t want to use them), you can also use flexible travel points to cover some or all of your accommodation expenses. Points programs like Scene+, TD Rewards, NBC À la carte Rewards, and American Express Membership Rewards are especially helpful if you’re booking an Airbnb or smaller hotel that isn’t covered by the major hotel loyalty programs.

Flexible travel points can also be used to pay for flights booked through Expedia, Booking.com, and through each financial institution’s own travel booking portal (e.g., Scene+ Travel powered by Expedia).

To earn these valuable points, we recommend the following credit cards:

Annual travel credits

Another great way to save on your flight or other related travel expenses is by using a credit card that comes with an annual travel credit.

In Canada, there are a handful of cards that provide annual credits, some for travel expenses, some for dining, and some as lifestyle credits. You can learn more about these credits in our article on which Canadian cards carry annual credits, but here’s four examples to get you started:

American Express Platinum Card^® — $200 travel credit
American Express^® Gold Rewards Card — $100 travel credit
National Bank World Elite Mastercard — $150 travel credit
BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card — $50 lifestyle credit

Save on FX fees

One final way to save on your favourite event if you’re travelling outside of Canada is to put your foreign currency spending on a card that doesn’t charge FX fees.

Most Canadian credit cards charge you a 2.5% fee when you make a purchase in a currency other than Canadian; however, with a no-FX card like the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card, you can avoid that fee entirely.

Wealthsimple’s credit card is the other no-FX option worth knowing about in Canada. It charges no foreign exchange fee of its own and pays 2% cash back on all spending. Here is the nuance most roundups skip: Wealthsimple drops its own markup, but the payment network still sets the underlying conversion rate, so no FX fee is not quite the same thing as no conversion cost.

In addition, there are no foreign exchange fees on any purchase made in a currency other than the Canadian dollar, and no annual fee if you hold more than $100,000 in assets with Wealthsimple, or if you transfer the direct deposit of an eligible payroll to Wealthsimple.

Annual Fee Waiver

The Annual Fee (“Fee”) for the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite* or Wealthsimple Visa Infinite Privilege* credit card (“Card”) is $240 and is charged monthly at $20. The monthly fee is charged when the Card is issued (regardless of activation) and is billed to the first statement and once a month thereafter, unless this Fee is waived. Waiving the Fee is a promotional offer (“Fee Waiver Offer”) and requires clients to meet specific criteria to qualify and continue having the Fee waived. The Card Fee is automatically waived for any client with a Premium or Generation status, and the Fee will continue to be waived so long as that status is maintained. The Fee Waiver Offer is also available to Core clients who direct deposit at least $4,000 per month into their Wealthsimple Chequing Account (“Chequing Account”) within the preceding 30-days. Only direct deposits classified by Payments Canada as pre-authorized transactions with transaction codes ranging from 200 to 207, 310, 311, and 318 would be considered eligible. (“Qualifying Deposit”). If a Core client doesn’t make a Qualifying Deposit, or if a Premium or Generation client cannot maintain their status and becomes a Core client without a Qualifying Deposit, the monthly fee of $20 will be added to their next statement and continue to be charged until a Qualifying Deposit is confirmed.

For residents of Quebec: The Quebec Annual Fee (“Annual Fee”) for the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite* or Wealthsimple Visa Infinite Privilege* credit card is $240 and is charged when the Card is issued (regardless of activation) and is billed to the first statement and once a year thereafter. Waiving the Fee is a promotional offer (“Quebec Fee Waiver Offer”) and requires clients to meet specific criteria to qualify. The Annual Fee is automatically waived for any client with Premium or Generation status at the time the Card is issued. If a Core client obtains Premium or Generation status after the Annual Fee has been applied, a prorated refund will be issued for the number of months remaining in the current twelve (12) month period, which starts on the anniversary of the Card issuance date (“Card Year”) from the month eligibility is obtained ($20 per month). The Quebec Fee Waiver Offer is also available to Core clients who direct deposit at least $4,000 per month into their Chequing Account within the 30-days preceding the time the Card is issued. Only direct deposits classified by Payments Canada as pre-authorized transactions with transaction codes ranging from 200 to 207, 310, 311, and 318 would be considered eligible. (“Qualifying Deposit”). If a Core client starts making Qualifying Deposits after the Annual Fee has been applied, a prorated refund will be issued for the number of months remaining in the current Card Year from the month eligibility is obtained ($20 per month).

Credit Card Rewards (Cashback Offer)

The cash back promotional offer (“Cashback Offer”) is valid for new and existing users of the Card. The 2% earn rate, which may be subject to change, applies to purchases, excluding cash-like transactions, refunds, any applicable fees and adjustments (“Qualified Spend”). Cash back credits are earned on Qualified Spend only. You may redeem your cash back as soon as the Qualified Spend transaction is settled or up to 10 years after the Qualified Spend transaction is settled. Cash back can be redeemed directly in the app. Cash back can only be deposited into your Wealthsimple chequing, TFSA, RRSP, or non-registered accounts. There is no minimum amount needed to redeem. If a refund is processed after the Cash back credit is redeemed, the amount will be deducted from your rewards balance.

Events and card perks: FAQ

Can I pay for concert tickets with credit card points?

Rarely, and it is the weakest use of your points. Marriott Bonvoy Moments is the main exception, since it lets you redeem points directly for event access. For everything else, points are better spent on the flight and the hotel around the event, where the amounts are much larger.

Which cards give the best event presale access in Canada?

American Express has the widest presale footprint through Front of the Line, covering Osheaga, Mirvish theatre productions and multiple F1 weekends. Visa owns the TIFF presale, and RBC runs its own access through RBCxMusic. The right card depends entirely on who sponsors the event you want to attend.

Do I need a premium card to get event perks?

Not for most of them. Presale access generally comes with any eligible card from the sponsoring issuer, not just its premium tier. Lounges and terraces are where the tier starts to matter: the TIFF on-site spaces require a Visa Infinite card, and the Centurion Lounge at the US Open is limited to Centurion and Platinum members.

What do Visa cardholders get at TIFF?

An early ticket pre-sale window that opens in June, ahead of the general public. Visa Infinite cardholders also get the Priority Line and lounge at the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Visa Infinite Terrace at Roy Thomson Hall, and the Visa Infinite Studio across the street.

How do TD cardholders save at the Montreal Jazz Festival?

Eligible TD cardholders get 15% off food, non-alcoholic drinks and festival merchandise at participating vendors, plus priority entrance lanes at Place des Arts, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier and Le Studio TD. Each cardholder can bring one guest and any accompanying minors, though everyone still needs a valid ticket for ticketed events.

Can I redeem points for event tickets with Marriott Bonvoy?

Yes, through Marriott Bonvoy Moments. Some experiences are offered at a set point price and others go to auction. Recent Canadian examples include the SailGP race in Halifax from a boat at the finish line, 2026 FIFA World Cup tickets, and premium access to the Memorial Cup in Kelowna. Occasional 1-Point Drops give a few members an experience for a single point.

What is the cheapest way to cover the hotel around an event?

A hotel loyalty programme if the city has the right property, since a free night certificate covers the whole night regardless of the event-week surge pricing. If the hotel you want sits outside the big chains, flexible points such as Scene+, TD Rewards or Membership Rewards can be applied to almost any booking instead.

Bottom Line

Enjoying an event anywhere in the world is a wonderful way to experience something unique and to create memories that will last a lifetime. Regardless of whether you prefer to dance all night at a big music festival, enjoy a relaxed evening at the theatre, or cheer on your favourite sports team, these events help us connect with ourselves, our friends, and our community.

One habit is worth building: find out which financial institution sponsors an event before the tickets go on sale, not after. The presale window is where the good seats go, and it is consistently the most valuable perk on this list. The lounges, the terraces and the priority lanes are pleasant extras, but early access is what actually changes which seat you end up in.
