As soon as you have your digital or physical card you can start earning points, so let’s look at the best ways to grow your PC Optimum balance.
Since the PC Optimum program was originally the Shoppers Optimum program, it’s no surprise that some of the best ways to earn (and redeem) points are available with Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix.
With your PC Optimum card, you can earn a base rate of 15 points per dollar spent at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix locations across the country.
Fun Fact: The PC Optimum program began in February 2018 when Loblaws Companies Ltd. combined two popular Canadian loyalty programs, PC Plus and Shoppers Optimum, and launched the new program across its multiple brands.
Beyond the regular PC Optimum earning rate, Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix also has promotional offers and special earning events throughout the year, such as their well-known 20x the Points events.
Timing your bigger purchases and product stock-ups to align with these events gives you the opportunity to rack up a large number of points quickly.
It’s a great idea to consistently check your PC Optimum app so that you can watch for personalized offers that give you bonus points on specific items or even free items.
Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix usually offer bonus points if you sign up for their promotional emails or text messages and then spend a specified dollar amount.
Although this is only a one-time offer and does require you to spend some money to get the points, it’s still an easy way to add to your account balance.
One of the easiest ways to earn PC Optimum points on all your purchases is by using one of the four available PC Financial credit cards:
As a cardholder, you not only earn points every time you use the card, but you also get tiered earning rates, giving you up to 45 PC Optimum points per dollar spent. We’ve written a guide to the best PC Financial credit cards so you can learn more.
You can also earn PC Optimum points by signing up for and using a PC Money Account.
PC Financial often offers a sign-up bonus of PC Optimum points when you open a PC Money Account and meet the offer requirements.
Additionally, by using this account, you can also earn points in a number of other ways, as shown in the image below:
You can earn PC Optimum points at the following grocery stores in Canada:
Although you don’t earn points based on the dollars you spend, you can earn a nice amount of points by purchasing specific items that are being promoted in store, through the weekly offers, and through your personalized offers that you can find in the app.
If you prefer to shop from home, you can still earn PC Optimum points when you order your groceries online through PC Express, and there’s often bonus points on offer if you choose to subscribe to PC Express Pass.
Scan your PC Optimum card when you fill up your tank at over 4,500 Esso and Mobil gas stations across Canada and earn points as follows:
Plus, stack these earnings with the additional points you earn with your PC Financial credit card and watch your balance grow!
In addition to the special points events presented by Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix, you can also watch out for another key points event that’s available at even more brands and locations: PC Optimum Moredays.
PC Optimum Moredays have historically provided exclusive offers, such as the ability to earn 50% back in points on specific items, at participating Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix, Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstores, Esso, Mobil, and more.
PC Insiders is a subscription service that gives subscribers extra perks and higher earning rates within the PC Optimum program.
Unfortunately, due to the program’s popularity, it is not accepting new subscribers at this time.
A fun way to earn a few extra PC Optimum points is by downloading and using the PC Health App.
This app helps you manage your health with resources and support, and it usually offers the opportunity to earn PC Optimum points when you first sign up and when you participate in health programs and challenges.
Generally speaking, PC Optimum points are worth 1 cent each and typically have to be redeemed in chunks of 10,000.
However, there are a couple exceptions, including some ways to get additional value or add bonus points to your redemptions.
One of the most common ways to use PC Optimum points is to redeem them in-store to save on your bill at participating grocery stores.
Points can be redeemed at a rate of 10,000 points = $10 when you check out, and they must be redeemed in increments of 10,000.
It’s worthwhile keeping your eyes out for special event redemption days as they provide extra value for your points.
Keep in mind that you are not able to earn or redeem points on the following items: tobacco, lottery tickets, alcohol, gift cards, prepaid card products, passport photos, transit tickets and passes, events tickets, and in a few other instances.
You can redeem your points at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix at the usual rate of 10,000 points = $10, but if you’re looking to get maximum value from your PC Optimum points, it’s a good idea to wait for one of Shoppers Drug Mart’s/Pharmaprix’s Spend Your Points events.
These events offer bonus points when you redeem a specific number of points. For example, during past events you could redeem 70,000 points for $70 plus $30 in bonus points, giving you $100 in value.
You can also redeem your PC Optimum points through Shoppers Drug Mart’s/Pharmaprix’s online store, which gives you access to a number of products that aren’t available in the physical stores.
PC Optimum points can also be redeemed to get you a discount the next time you fill up your vehicle at participating Esso or Mobil gas stations.
By redeeming 4,000 points, you get $0.10 off per whole litre of gas (up to 40 litres), which is an equivalent value to the 10,000 points = $10 redemption you can access at grocery stores and pharmacies.
You can also redeem 10,000 points for your choice of car wash packages at the same gas stations. Depending on which package you choose, this redemption can be worth even more than $10, making it a good value use of your points.
For those looking to update their wardrobe, PC Optimum points can also be redeemed at Joe Fresh at the usual rate of 10,000 points = $10.
PC Optimum is an excellent way to get some extra value back on many of your everyday purchases.
By earning PC Optimum points at participating grocery stores, drugstores, and gas stations, you can save money through redemptions and enjoy exclusive offers and promotions.
