Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte TravelTM agency section of our À la carte RewardsTM site.
For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. For all conditions, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.

These are two basic cards that we often recommend when someone wants to earn points quickly and easily.
So, we’ll break down the key differences between these credit cards based on:
Through Milesopedia, you can have your first-year annual fee rebated (a $150 value) with this exclusive welcome offer for the National Bank World Elite Mastercard. This promotion runs from June 30 to November 4, 2026 for new primary cardholders, provided you have not held a National Bank personal Mastercard in the past 24 months.
30,000 points when you spend $4,000 in the first 110 days.
An additional 20,000 points when you spend $7,000 in the first 180 days.
An additional 20,000 points when you spend $12,000 in the first 12 months.
No annual feefor the first year.
$50 annual credit.
Monthly credit for streaming services.
Advantage : BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card
With this exclusive offer, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card stands out, particularly with a welcome bonus of up to 70,000 points and accelerated earn rates on everyday spending categories.
or annual spending of at least $15,000 charged to the card.
Advantage: BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card
It’s easier to qualify for the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card, both in terms of income requirements and the minimum spend of $15,000 (an average of $1,250 per month) needed on the card.
However, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card should not be completely overlooked in this case. It offers a $50 annual lifestyle credit that you can use however you like. This may be more suitable for people who don’t travel much or at all. This card would therefore cost a small $70 per year ($120 – $50).

*For the Grocery and Restaurant category, you can earn 5 points per dollar spent on the first $2,500 in monthly purchases (across all categories) charged to the card. Starting at $2,501, points are accumulated at a rate of 2 points per dollar for the 5 X points category.
* This card offers 5 BMO points per dollar spent in the five bonus categories: dining, food delivery, groceries, gas, and public transit. However, this advantageous rate only applies up to certain annual caps ($6,000 for dining, $6,000 for groceries, $20,000 for gas and transit), after which you earn 1 point per dollar.
Advantage : National Bank World Elite Mastercard
If groceries represent a significant portion of your household budget, these two credit cards offer an excellent earning rate of 5 points per dollar in this spending category.
However, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card has a drawback: after $6,001 in annual grocery purchases, the earn rate drops sharply to just 1 point per dollar. So, if you spend $115 or more per week on groceries, you will quickly reach this cap and lose the card’s main benefit for the rest of the year.
Whereas the National Bank World Elite Mastercard is more generous with a monthly cap of $2,500. This higher limit lets you take full advantage of the elevated earn rate of 5 points per dollar, without worrying about hitting the cap as quickly as with the competing card.
Redeeming Points
Both cards are part of different loyalty programs:
The ways to use your points are similar, but you’ll notice differences in the value of each program’s points.
With National Bank World Elite Mastercard, you cannot transfer your points to other programs. According to our estimate, one NBC reward point is worth 0.90 cents.
Here are a few ways to use your Reward Points:
Rewards
Points for $100
Exchange on the NBC à la carte Rewards dedicated portal
RRSP or TFSA contribution Repayment of home equity line of credit or mortgage loan
12 000
Gift card
12,000 – 13,500
Statement Credit
25 000
BMO Rewards points cannot be transferred to other reward programs.
According to our estimate, one BMO reward point is worth 0.67 cents. There are several options for using BMO Rewards points:
Rewards
Points for $100
Buy your own travel
15 000
Statement Credit
20 000
Physical and electronic gift card (variable)
Between 17,000 and 21,000+

Advantage: National Bank World Elite Mastercard
Thanks to the great flexibility of the National Bank World Elite Mastercard, points can be used in several ways and require fewer points for redemptions, since they have a higher value.

All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card leads with a welcome bonus of up to 70,000 BMO Rewards points (about $467 in travel value), plus a first-year rebate on the $120 annual fee, a $50 annual credit, and a monthly credit for streaming services. The National Bank World Elite Mastercard, for its part, offers a first-year annual fee rebate (a $150 value) along with an annual travel credit of up to $150. In terms of overall welcome offer value, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card keeps the edge thanks to its many credits and accelerated points earning. That said, the recurring travel credit on the National Bank World Elite Mastercard is a worthwhile advantage for cardholders who plan to keep their card for several years.
Which card offers the best earn rates on groceries and restaurants?
Both cards offer 5 points per dollar on groceries and restaurants, but with different caps. The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite has a combined annual cap of $6,000 before the rate drops to 1 point per dollar. The NBC World Elite Mastercard applies a monthly cap of $2,500 per category, which equals $30,000 per year and offers far greater flexibility for households that spend heavily in these categories. For heavy users, NBC lets you earn bonus points for much longer before hitting the cap.
Is NBC’s unlimited lounge access in Montreal really worth the card?
Yes—especially for travellers connecting through Montreal-Trudeau more than four times a year. The NBC World Elite Mastercard offers unlimited access to the Montreal International lounge at no cost, whereas a single visit elsewhere in Canada typically costs $40 to $60 with a pay-per-visit Priority Pass. For a traveller connecting 8 to 12 times a year, this perk alone is worth $320 to $720 in annual savings. The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite offers no lounge access, which is a major net advantage for NBC.
Which card offers the best rewards flexibility?
The National Bank World Elite Mastercard is more flexible because its À la carte points can be converted into statement credits, deposits into an RRSP, TFSA, or mortgage payments, in addition to travel and merchandise rewards. Each point is worth about 0.90 cents. The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite limits redemptions to 0.667 cents per point through the BMO Rewards portal for travel and merchandise, with no banking options. For cardholders who want to cash out their points rather than use them for travel, NBC is clearly more rewarding and more versatile.
