Earning Points
With the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card, you can earn 5 BMO Rewards points per dollar spent on:
- Groceries
- restaurants, bars
- Food delivery
- Gas
- local transport
And 1 BMO Rewards point per dollar spent everywhere else.
Here are some examples of purchases on my BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card:

As you can see, in terms of point accumulation, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card particularly focuses on everyday purchases: groceries, gas, local transportation, restaurants, bars, and even home food delivery.
All 5x categories (with a Visa credit card accepted almost anywhere)!
My home food delivery purchases (GoodFood), takeout restaurant (McDonald’s), or bakery purchases allowed me to earn 5 points per dollar.
If you use your points for travel, this means a return of 3.33% on these purchases (or 2.5% when paying for any purchase with your points).
For all other expenses, it will be 1 point per dollar.
I tested it on Costco.ca (which accepts Mastercard and Visa credit cards): the purchase only earned 1 point per dollar.

10% Bonus with an Additional Card
If you add an authorized user to your account, you will earn 10% more points.
This means you’ll earn 5.5 points per dollar in bonus categories (groceries, gas, local transport, restaurants, bars, home food delivery). That’s a return of 3.66% if you use your points for travel purchases through BMO Rewards.
The additional card fee is $50. Therefore, you will need to spend at least $14,000 per year to justify adding the additional card. And if you spend more, you’ll get more value!

Possible accumulation in the first year
The $12,000 in purchases that unlock the full bonus also earn base points. And the 5-points-per-dollar categories cover groceries, restaurants, food delivery, gas, and local transport. So most of a family budget already goes there.
Here’s an example breakdown over a year, with 75% of spending in the 5-points categories:
| Category | Rate | Spending (example) | Points earned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grocery | 5 points/$ | $4,800 | 24 000 |
| Restaurants, bars, and food delivery | 5 points/$ | 2 400 $ | 12 000 |
| Gas, public transit, and ridesharing | 5 points/$ | $1,800 | 9 000 |
| All other purchases | 1 point/$ | $3,000 | 3 000 |
| Total | – | $12,000 | 48 000 |
Then add the welcome bonus. On the BMO Rewards portal, 150 points are worth $1 toward travel. So here’s the full picture for the first year:
| Source of points | Points | Travel value |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome bonus | 70,000 | $467 |
| Earned on $12,000 in purchases (mix above) | 48,000 | $320 |
| Total first year | 118,000 | $787 |
On top of these $787 in points, you also get the $120 annual fee waived in the first year. So the total value comes close to $907. And the $50 annual credit comes as a bonus on your first anniversary.
Using Points
You can use your BMO Rewards points in many ways:
- Travel
- for any purchase via the Pay with Points option
- For products or gift cards
- Investment
Let’s analyze the two most common uses of BMO Rewards points.

Redeem your BMO Rewards Points for Travel
To redeem your BMO Rewards points, you’ll need to use the BMO Rewards website. You can redeem BMO Rewards points for different types of trips:
- flight tickets
- hotel nights
- Car rentals
- Vacation packages
- Cruises
The fare is similar to what you might find with other online travel agencies.
Using BMO Rewards points for travel is the best possible use of your points: 150 points = $1. Thus, 70,000 points have a value of $467.
BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card – Our opinion
We’ve been tracking the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card since launch and testing it with our own purchases. The screenshots above come from a real account: groceries, food delivery, takeout restaurant, and a test on Costco.ca.
These tests confirm one thing: the 5-points categories really do cover everyday spending. However, anything outside those categories drops back to 1 point per dollar.
With a 3.33% return in the boosted categories, the card compares with the best grocery and restaurant cards in Canada. However, it remains an everyday spending card, not a travel card: no airport lounge access, no NEXUS credit.
Who is this card for?
- Families: groceries are often the biggest household expense, and they earn 5 points per dollar.
- Restaurant lovers: restaurants, bars, delivery, and takeout all count in the boosted category.
- Commuters: gas, public transit, and ridesharing earn at the same rate of 5 points per dollar.
- Couples: the 10% bonus with an authorized user becomes worthwhile beyond $14,000 in boosted spending per year.
- Frequent travellers: no airport lounges and no NEXUS credit. The BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard Card is a better fit for that need.
- Costco customers: the warehouse store only accepts Mastercard. On Costco.ca, the card works, but it only earns 1 point per dollar.
- Transfer fans: BMO Rewards points can’t be transferred to airline or hotel programs. Their value remains fixed.
- Income below the thresholds: BMO requires $60,000 in personal income or $100,000 in household income.
How we evaluate this offer
Our calculations are based on three consistent rules. First, we value BMO Rewards points at 0.67 cents, i.e., the travel redemption rate on BMO’s portal (150 points = $1). Next, we only count benefits actually received during the first year. Finally, we always compare the value of the points to the real annual fees.
The accumulation table above is based on a specific profile: $12,000 in annual spending, with 75% in the 5-points categories. If your breakdown differs, adjust the table lines to your own amounts.
Also, the offer terms come from BMO. Our analyses remain independent of the commercial agreements we have with issuers.
If your annual spending regularly exceeds $75,000, also take a look at the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege* Card, which expands the 5-points categories to travel and pharmacies, with a welcome bonus of up to 200,000 points.

Frequently Asked Questions about the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card Offer
Here are frequently asked questions in the milesopedia community about this card.
How do I unlock the full 70,000-point welcome bonus on the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite?
The 70,000 BMO Rewards points bonus is divided into several tiers. You earn 30,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first 110 days following account opening. You then earn an additional 20,000 points after spending $7,000 in the first 180 days, followed by another 20,000 points after reaching $12,000 in spending during the first 12 months. This structure rewards cardholders who use their card regularly throughout the first year.
Which rewards categories make the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite advantageous in the long term?
The card earns 5 points per dollar on groceries, restaurants, meal delivery, ridesharing, public transit, and gas, which is one of the broadest 5x combinations among Canadian Visa Infinite cards. Adding an authorized user for $50 unlocks a permanent 10% bonus on every point earned, effectively increasing your 5x categories to 5.5x. With a point value of approximately 0.667 cents in travel rewards, heavy spenders in the bonus categories often achieve a return above 3.3%, surpassing most cash-back Visa Infinite cards.
Is the $120 annual fee for the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite worth it after the first year?
The card includes an annual $50 credit for lifestyle services (streaming, fitness, mobile, meal delivery), which immediately reduces the net cost to $70. Adding a partner as an authorized user unlocks the permanent 10% bonus that typically generates more than $70 in additional value for cardholders spending $10,000 or more per year in the 5x categories. The travel insurance is solid for a Visa Infinite with emergency medical, trip cancellation, and rental car coverage. Most users easily justify renewal by actively using the lifestyle credit.
What income is required to qualify for the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite?
BMO requires a minimum annual personal income of $60,000 or household income of $100,000, which aligns with the Visa Infinite standard at major Canadian banks. An acceptable credit score is also required (typically 700 or higher) along with a clean record of recent applications with BMO. If you don’t meet the income threshold, the BMO eclipse rise Visa with no annual fee is an excellent alternative with no minimum income requirement, featuring a 25,000-point welcome bonus that remains attractive for new cardholders.
