How to Use Your Avion Points for Travel Rewards

Use the Fixed Fare Chart for Airline Tickets

One way to use your Avion points for travel is by purchasing a flight. This is the best way to get the most value from the RBC Avion Rewards program. This was described in detail in this article.

Depending on the destination, 15,000 to 100,000 Avion points per ticket are required.

RBC Avion Rewards points allow you to travel anywhere in the world with a round-trip ticket. A one-way ticket requires only half the Avion points. Here is the air redemption schedule for a round-trip flight:

Avion Points DestinationsMaximum Ticket Price
15 000Flight within a province or neighbouring state$350
35 000Flight anywhere in Canada or the United States (except Hawaii and Alaska)$750
45 000Western Canada or U.S. to Mexico, Hawaii, or Alaska. Eastern Canada to Bermuda, Central America, or the Caribbean $900
55 000Eastern Canada or U.S. to Mexico, Hawaii, or Alaska. Western Canada to Bermuda, Central America, or the Caribbean $1,100
65 000Flight from Canada or United States to Europe$1,300
100 000Fly from Canada or United States to … anywhere in the world!$2,000

So, this is equivalent to about 2 cents per Avion point on average.

Use the Flexible Fare Chart for Airfare

The Flexible Reward Grid uses 100 Avion points for a $1 discount on your flight. The transaction must be made directly on the Avion Rewards website using the flight search tool.

For example, with the fixed redemption grid, 35,000 points can get you a round-trip ticket anywhere in Canada and the United States, up to a value of $750.

If you choose to buy that same $750 ticket using the flexible reward grid, you will need 75,000 points. Therefore, using the flexible grid would be a disadvantage in this case. It’s up to you to do the math, depending on the number of points you have in the bank.

Redeem Avion Points for Any Trip

For more flexibility, book a hotel, car rental, cruise, or flights as you wish on the Avion Rewards site to receive a statement credit.

Avion credit cardholders can redeem 100 Avion points to deduct $1 from this travel expense. For example, for a night at the hotel that cost $200, 20,000 points are required to bring the balance down to zero.

As for ION and ION+ credit cardholders, it’s different. They redeem their points at a conversion rate of 172 points = $1.

Buy gift cards

There are about 250 gift card choices to buy with Avion points (242 physical gift cards and 86 electronic ones, at last count). For travel-related ones, there are about ten. Such as buying a gift card for future stays at Fairmont or Best Western hotels, for example.

In general, the cost is 1 cent per Avion point, so 5,000 points for a $50 gift card.

Uber and Tim Hortons seem to be different, with a less favourable rate of around 7,000 points for $50 (for Tim Hortons, save your points for a road trip instead!).

Transfer to other airline programs

Did you know that it’s possible to transfer your Avion points to other airline programs? We explain how to do it in our guide on the subject:

Another way of exchanging RBC points in the event of technical problems

Sometimes, the Avion Rewards site may experience technical difficulties or your searched flight may not appear in the search results.

At that point, call Avion Rewards Customer Service at 1-800-769-2512.

  • Obtain an authorization number to book the flight you want;
  • Book your own flight directly on the desired airline’s website;
  • Send an email to travel@service.rbcrewards.com with your authorization number obtained earlier from Customer Service, your name, the number of tickets booked, proof of purchase for the tickets, and itinerary details

Subsequently, Avion Rewards will deduct the required points from your RBC Rewards points account to credit the cost of your flights, according to their redemption grid.
