Bereavement and family urgency fares: how to save on airfare

Family

When there’s a family emergency, you need to get to your loved ones as quickly as possible. Here’s how airlines work to take advantage of these emergency or bereavement fares during this stressful time.

What are the discounts for family emergency or bereavement tariff?

Family emergency fares are special discounts offered by airlines for emergency situations. The trip must be made immediately, with the goal of being by the side of a close family member.

These situations may require immediate presence with the immediate family:

An imminent or recent death;
A serious accident;
A serious illness such as a heart attack, or someone who is terminally ill or admitted to intensive care.

What to do in the event of a family emergency or death

1. Contact the airline right away by phone: explain your situation and ask if they offer reduced fares in the event of a family emergency or death.

2. Be prepared to provide proof. Depending on the airline, you will need to provide family emergency information and documents such as :

A death certificate from the funeral home, hospital or coroner;
The complete address and telephone number of the funeral home, hospital or palliative care centre;
An official letter with hospital letterhead or name of attending physician;
Date and time of funeral ;
Form requested by the airline ;
Relationship (must be immediate family), etc.

Make sure you have as much information as possible with you when you call the airline.

What’s more, a high degree of flexibility in terms of flight date and time is required, as last-minute flights are often fully booked.

What is the definition of immediate family?

Here again, the definition varies from airline to airline, but it concerns :

Spouse ;
Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, son-in-law or daughter-in-law ;
Parents, parents-in-law, grandparents, great-grandparents ;
Brother, half-brother, sister and half-sister;
Uncle, aunt, nephew, niece ;
Legal guardian.

Airlines offering special fares for family emergencies and deaths

Read and follow each airline’s conditions to the letter: if you don’t, your request for a reduced fare will be denied. The clauses explained below (checked on the airlines’ websites on October 26, 2026, unless otherwise noted) may change at any time without notice. It is your responsibility to read all the fine print.

Air Canada

To benefit from Air Canada’s family emergency travel policy, travel must take place on Air Canada,Air Canada Rouge, Air Canada Express or with a multiple code through their airline partners.

First, call Air Canada toll-free at 1-888-247-2262 to book a future flight with a family emergency fare. Economy Standard, Economy Flex, Comfort and Latitude fares are eligible; Economy Basic fares are eligible only for travel outside North America. The trip must be taken within 10 days of booking and for a maximum of 60 days.

Then, no later than 7 days after the traveler’s return home, an e-mail must be sent by the traveler to Bereavement@AirCanada.ca with the proof of death requested in the initial call. Otherwise, you will have to pay the difference in price compared with the rate in effect on the day of booking.

Please note that there are no refunds for trips already taken.

Air France

Air France offers a reduced fare for the death of a family member. This is only valid for travel between mainland France and Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion or French Guiana. You should call them on +33 9 69 39 36 54.

Air Transat

Air Transat does not offer special fares for family emergencies and deaths.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines and its Bereavement Fare policy offers a 10% discount on the lowest airfare available, for travel within 7 days due to the death of an immediate family member. You must call them at 1-800-252-7522 to reserve.

Calm Air

In Manitoba and Nunavut, Calm Air offers a discount for round-trip travel in the event of a family emergency. You absolutely must call their Customer Service department at 1-800-839-2256.

Delta Airlines

Members of the Delta Airlines SkyMiles loyalty program (free enrolment) are eligible for a rate that offers flexibility and avoids the need to pay certain service charges. Buying a plane ticket for an unforeseen reason won’t necessarily be cheaper, but it will give you greater flexibility during this difficult time. It applies to Delta’s domestic and international flights, but a fare difference may still apply.

There are two ways to book the special rate:

Contact them via their Customer Service page, by clicking on “Send us a message”;
Call them at 1-800-221-1212.

PAL Airlines

To take advantage of a special fare in the event of an urgent family situation, reservations must be made by calling the PAL Airlines reservations department at 1-800-563-2800. Travel must take place within 10 days of booking and last no more than 60 days.

Porter

Porter does not offer bereavement fares, as stated in its official Booking and Fares FAQ (checked on October 26, 2026).

WestJet

WestJet offers bereavement or family emergency fares under certain conditions and must be called at 1-888-937-8538. Only Econo and EconoFlex fares are available for this special price, and only for WestJet Rewards members (free registration). The whole trip, outbound and return, must be completed within 30 days of booking, and these fares don’t cover WestJet’s partner airlines. They aren’t necessarily the cheapest, but they give you more flexibility for last-minute changes or cancellations.

Tips for maximizing your savings on an airline ticket

If nothing works the way you want, explore other tips and options:

Use your points or cash back: through your preferred loyalty program, consider using your points from credit card programs such as Scene+, Avion, Membership Rewards, TD Rewards, BONUSDOLLARS, etc. Buy your plane ticket and make your travel arrangements as you wish, then use your points to get a statement credit.
Use search tools such as Google Flight and SkyScanner to find the best deals.
If you need to travel within Quebec, the Quebec government's Programme d'accès aérien aux régions (PAAR) offers a 50% to 85% discount on airfare to or from eligible regional airports, depending on the airport, for up to 6 one-way tickets per person per year (according to the Quebec government, checked on October 26, 2026).

Last-minute flights with airline points

If you have family abroad, accumulating points that can be accessed at any time is highly recommended.

These points earned through your favorite frequent flyer program will be extremely useful, and the trip will be booked very quickly.

Aeroplan Program

The Aeroplan program is extremely flexible, with over 50 airline partners. You can fly Air Canada, SWISS, United Airlines, EGYPTAIR, Turkish Airlines and more.

In this very last-minute example, found in April 2024 (points and cash prices may have changed since), a quick flight to Paris (CDG) was possible for as little as 27,700 Aeroplan points (with 1 stopover) or 56,600 Aeroplan points (non-stop) in economy class.

The Avios program covers all airlines in the Oneworld network (Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Royal Air Maroc, etc.).

For the same example of a last-minute ticket to Paris, you can use 29,000 Avios with British Airways.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

If you’re traveling abroad and need to return home unexpectedly for a family emergency, consult your travel insurance brochure.

This falls under the definition of trip interruption, and you may be entitled to reimbursement for certain expenses in such a situation, either through your credit card insurance or your personal travel insurance. Contact your credit card issuer to find out how to proceed in such a situation.

If you’re about to leave on a trip and you can’t go because of an emergency, this could be a reason to cancel your trip. Same scenario here: contact your credit card or personal travel insurance.

Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan^® terms and conditions document.
These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan^® terms and conditions document.
Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte Travel^TM agency section of our À la carte Rewards^TM site.
For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. 1 This offer only applies to new applications for an RBC Avion Visa Infinite or RBC Avion Visa Platinum credit card (each, an “Eligible Credit Card”) received between “August 13, 2026” and “November 25, 2026” (“Offer Period”) and approved by Royal Bank of Canada (“Royal Bank”) subject to the conditions below. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the Eligible Credit Card account, as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account transferring to an Eligible Credit Card account during the Offer Period, are not eligible for the offer.

35,000 welcome Avion points (“Welcome Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty (60) days after your application has been approved, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Welcome points are credited to your account, “good standing” meaning that your Eligible Credit Card account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive credit card account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status.

You will receive 20,000 bonus Avion points (“Bonus Points”) if a total of $5,000 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) are posted to your Eligible Credit Card account within the first six (6) months from your Eligible Credit Card account opening date (“Period”). The Bonus Points will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty days (60) after you reach $5,000 in Qualifying Transactions, provided your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Bonus Points are credited to your account.

Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges and fees. Credits for returns and adjustments posted to your Eligible Credit Card account during the Period will reduce the amount of your Qualifying Transactions. The Qualifying Transaction Amount is based on the transaction posting date of each Qualifying Transaction, not the transaction date. This means that transactions that take place prior to the last day of the Period will not be considered for the Qualifying Transaction Amount if they have not yet been posted or processed by the merchant, the payment network (Visa) or Royal Bank by the last day of the Period.

15,000 additional Avion points (“Anniversary Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks after the one- year anniversary of your account opening, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Anniversary Points are credited to your account.

If you close or change your Eligible Credit Card Account for another type of RBC Royal Bank credit card before the Welcome Points, the Bonus Points and/or the Anniversary Points have been credited to your account, you may lose the benefit of this offer. This offer may not be combined or used in conjunction with any other offer. Royal Bank reserves the right to cancel, modify or withdraw this offer at any time without notice, even after your application has been approved, including if we suspect that you may be manipulating or abusing it, or engaging in any suspicious or fraudulent activity, as determined by Royal Bank in its sole discretion. For complete terms and conditions that apply to the Avion Rewards Program, please visit www.avionrewards.com or call 1-800-769-2512.

^Point redemptions for flights under the Air Travel Redemption Schedule start at 7,500 points for a short-haul one-way Economy Class flight priced at no more than $175 (and start at 15,000 points for a short-haul round-trip Economy Class flight priced at no more than $350). The traveller is responsible for all applicable taxes, administration fees and surcharges. To learn more, including guidelines regarding redeeming points for a Business Class flight, visit www.avionrewards.com/travel/.

2 Avion points are earned on qualifying net purchases only; they are not earned on cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant) interest charges or fees, and credits for returns and adjustments will reduce or cancel the points earned by the amounts originally charged.

4 To participate in this offer, you must have an RBC debit card or a credit card which is issued by Royal Bank of Canada (excluding RBC commercial credit cards) (“RBC Card”). RBC business clients will only be able to link up to two (2) RBC business credit cards and one (1) RBC business debit card to a Petro-Points card.

You must be enrolled in RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app in order to link your RBC Card to your Petro-Points card. Card linking may take up to 2 business days to process before savings and bonus points can be applied to purchases. A linked RBC Card means an RBC Card linked to a Petro-Points Account. Your linked RBC Card acts as your Petro-Points card. You will automatically earn Petro-Points when you pay for qualifying purchases with your linked RBC Card at Petro-Canada locations and you do not need to swipe your Petro-Points card before you pay. You can redeem your Petro-Points at Petro-Canada using your linked RBC Card. Each time you use your linked RBC Card to purchase any grade of gasoline, or diesel, at a Petro-Canada location, you will save three cents ($0.03) per litre at the time of the transaction.

6 Each time you use your linked Eligible Avion Rewards Credit Card to pay for purchases at a Petro-Canada Location, you will earn a bonus of twenty percent (20%) more Avion points than you normally earn for every $1 in purchases in accordance with the Avion Rewards Terms and Conditions. Please allow up to ninety (90) days from the date the transaction is posted on your credit card statement for the bonus points to be deposited into Avion Rewards account. Authorized Users are excluded from earning Avion points bonus.

Also, merchants that are not classified by a “travel” MCC may be located on the premises of merchants that are classified with a “travel” MCC, and purchases made at these locations may not qualify for this added benefit. For more details, please refer to the Avion Rewards Terms and Conditions at: https://www.avionrewards.com/terms-and-conditions/index.html

14 The term “redeem” means using your Be Well points to pay, or partially pay, for eligible purchases using your Be Well card at participating Rexall locations according to the instructions provided by the cashier, the point-of-sale terminal or any other payment processing device. You can redeem the Be Well points you earn for eligible purchases—see section 5 of the Be Well terms (available at https://www.letsbewell.ca/terms-conditions)—or for another purpose that we may provide from time to time.

You must have joined the Be Well program and registered your Be Well card, or otherwise called customer service, to redeem Be Well points. Any Be Well points earned on a Be Well card will remain the property of the Be Well administrator until the enrollment and registration process is complete.

You must redeem a minimum of 25,000 Be Well points at any time, which are worth $10. Be Well points can be redeemed in $10 increments, up to a maximum of $200 (500,000 Be Well points) in a single transaction. A maximum of 500,000 Be Well points can be redeemed within a 24-hour period.

In Ontario and British Columbia, Be Well points cannot be redeemed for prescription drugs. As the laws of each province and territory may change from time to time, you are encouraged to consult your pharmacist for more information in this regard.

Be Well points you earn when you make a purchase cannot be redeemed immediately for that same purchase. They can only be redeemed for a future eligible purchase that must be made at least 12 hours after earning those Be Well points.
