Overview
Alaska Airlines has unveiled Atmos Rewards, its rebranded loyalty program that now integrates Hawaiian Airlines. This evolution offers travelers a flexible and rewarding way to earn and redeem points across a vast partner network. With a distance-based earning structure, generous elite status benefits, and access to premium cabins with international partners, Atmos Rewards stands out as one of the most attractive airline loyalty programs currently available.
This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know to maximize the value of your points with Alaska Airlines’ Atmos Rewards.
Program Overview
Atmos Rewards is the latest evolution of Alaska Airlines’ loyalty program, now integrating Hawaiian Airlines following their merger. The program retains many features that made Alaska’s Mileage Plan popular while introducing new benefits for its members.
Key Features
- Distance-based earning: Earn points based on miles flown rather than dollars spent
- No point expiration: Atmos Rewards points never expire
- Extensive partner network: Earn and redeem points with Oneworld alliance members and other partners
- Free stopovers: One free stopover allowed on one-way tickets, two on round-trips
- Four elite tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium
- Tiered rewards: Earn valuable benefits at different thresholds before reaching elite status
Starting in 2026, Atmos Rewards will introduce a flexible earning model where members can choose how they earn points and status: based on distance, spending, or flight segments.
Earning Atmos Rewards Points

With Credit Cards
Alaska Airlines offers several co-branded credit cards that let you earn Atmos Rewards points. One important note before going any further: these cards are only available to U.S. residents. Since November 27, 2022, no Canadian credit card earns Atmos Rewards points.
- Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature Card: 3x points on Alaska/Hawaiian purchases, 2x on gas, EV charging, cable/streaming, and public transit, 1x on everything else
- Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite Card: 3x points on Alaska/Hawaiian purchases, dining, and international transactions, 1x on everything else
- Atmos Rewards Visa Business Card: 3x points on Alaska/Hawaiian purchases, 2x on gas, EV charging, shipping, and public transit, 1x on everything else
Transfer partners
You can transfer points to Atmos Rewards from these programs:
- Bilt Rewards: 1:1 transfer ratio
- Marriott Bonvoy: 3:1 transfer ratio (plus 5,000 bonus points when transferring 60,000 Marriott points)
Buy Points
Atmos Rewards sells its points directly through Points.com. The base price is US$35 per 1,000 points, plus a 7.5% U.S. federal excise tax, GST or HST, and QST for residents of Quebec.
- Annual cap: 150,000 points purchased or received as a gift per calendar year. Atmos Silver, Atmos Gold, Atmos Platinum, and Atmos Titanium members have no limit.
- Per-transaction cap: 100,000 points, in increments of 1,000 points up to 60,000, then in increments of 5,000 points beyond that.
- Status points: purchased points don’t count, either toward tiered rewards or toward reaching elite status.
- Refund: none—purchased points are non-refundable.
Alaska sweetens the deal several times a year, with bonuses that have reached 100% in previous rounds. Since no Canadian credit card earns Atmos Rewards points, direct purchases and transfers from Marriott Bonvoy or Bilt Rewards remain the only ways to earn them from Canada.
We track every promotion and its true cost per point in our article on buying Atmos Rewards points.
Other Earning Methods
- Atmos Rewards Shopping Portal: Earn points for online purchases from over 1,100 retailers
- Atmos Rewards Dining: Earn up to 5 points per dollar at participating restaurants
- Hotel partners: Earn points during stays at partner hotels, including Marriott Bonvoy, IHG One Rewards and Best Western Rewards
- Car Rental Partners: Earn with Avis, Budget, Hertz, and others
- Atmos for Business: Business rewards program offering 1 point per dollar spent on flights plus 10% bonus status points for travelers

- Two free stopovers on round-trip award tickets
This allows you to visit multiple destinations for the price of a single award, significantly increasing the value of your points.

Upgrades
You can use cash to upgrade to First Class within 24 hours of departure or at check-in. Upgrade prices are based on distance:
- 0-1,250 miles: $50
- 1,251-2,500 miles: $100
- 2,501-3,750 miles: $150
- 3,751+ miles: $200
Other Redemption Options
- Atmos Rewards Unlocked: Redeem for experiences, events, and travel packages
- Hotels and Car Rentals: Use points for hotel stays and car rentals
- Care Points: Donate points to charities
While these options offer flexibility, they generally provide lower value than redeeming for flights.
Award availability with partners remains the key battleground, and the Atmos Rewards search engine doesn’t show everything. A multi-program search tool saves you from having to check each airline individually.

Oneworld Partners
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- British Airways

- Fiji Airways
- Finnair
- Iberia
- Japan Airlines
- Malaysia Airlines
- Oman Air
- Qantas
- Qatar Airways

- SriLankan Airlines
Non-Alliance Partners
- Aer Lingus
- Air Tahiti Nui
- Aleutian Airways (earning only)
- Bahamasair (earning only)
- Cape Air (earning only)
- Condor
- Contour Airlines (earning only)

- Kenmore Air (earning only)
- Korean Air
- LATAM
- Mokulele Airlines (earning only)
- Philippine Airlines
- Porter Airlines
- Singapore Airlines
- Southern Airways Express (earning only)
- STARLUX Airlines
The partnership with Porter Airlines works both ways, making it the most practical gateway for a Canadian traveler. You can redeem your Atmos Rewards points for Porter flights, and conversely, use your VIPorter points to fly on Alaska Airlines.
Do not confuse the two programs. VIPorter is Porter’s program, separate from Atmos Rewards. Redeeming VIPorter points for an Alaska flight doesn’t go through your Atmos account and doesn’t follow the same availability. The number of Alaska itineraries you can book this way remains limited.
Oneworld Benefits
Atmos Rewards elite members receive reciprocal benefits when flying on Oneworld partner airlines:
- Atmos Silver (Oneworld Ruby): Priority check-in, preferred seating access, waitlist priority
- Atmos Gold (Oneworld Sapphire): Business class lounge access, priority boarding, extra baggage allowance

Canadian Cards That Lead There
None of the cards above are offered in Canada, and no Canadian card directly earns Atmos Rewards points. Two workarounds exist nonetheless, and they involve actual cards available here.
Via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer to Atmos Rewards, at the ratio mentioned above. A card that accumulates Bonvoy points therefore indirectly contributes to your Atmos balance, and this is the most direct path from Canada.
Upstream, via American Express Membership Rewards points. They transfer to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1.2 rate, creating a full chain between your everyday spending and Atmos Rewards.
American Express boosts this transfer about twice a year, with a bonus of up to 30%. Check our Marriott Bonvoy transfer bonus tracker before transferring: doing it during a promotion can make a big difference.
In practical terms, 1,000 Membership Rewards points give you 1,200 Bonvoy points, or 400 Atmos points once the 3:1 ratio is applied. During a 30% bonus, the same 1,000 points give you 1,560 Bonvoy points, so 520 Atmos points. At the 60,000 Bonvoy points transferred in one go, the 5,000-point bonus mentioned above improves the math even further.
An honest warning. This two-step transfer dilutes your points. It works well to top up an Atmos balance for a ticket you’ve already spotted, but much less to build a stash from scratch: in that case, a direct transfer to another airline program, or using Bonvoy points for hotel nights, often yields more.
Any Membership Rewards card can feed this chain, starting with the American Express Cobalt® Card for everyday spending.
By VIPorter. BMO VIPorter cards accumulate VIPorter points, redeemable for Alaska Airlines flights thanks to the partnership with Porter. You never touch an Atmos point, but you fly on the same network.
Click on a card’s name to see its terms and current welcome bonus.
Finally, there’s the direct purchase of points, billed in US dollars. A card without foreign currency conversion fees saves you 2.5% in fees, and we detail which ones in our article on purchasing Atmos Rewards points.
Best Uses of Points
Atmos Rewards offers several high-value redemption opportunities:
Domestic Flights
- Short-haul flights: From 5,000 one-way points on Alaska/Hawaiian or 4,500 points on American Airlines for flights under 700 miles
- Transcontinental flights: 12,500 one-way points in economy, 30,000 points in first class
- Flights to Hawaii: 15,000 one-way points from the West Coast in economy, 40,000 points in first class
International Premium Cabins
- Japan Airlines: Business Class to Japan from 60,000 one-way points (West Coast) or 75,000 points (East Coast); First Class from 75,000-110,000 points
- Cathay Pacific: Business Class to Hong Kong from 85,000 one-way points
- Fiji Airways: Business Class to Fiji, New Zealand, or Australia from 75,000 one-way points
- Aer Lingus: Business Class to Ireland from 45,000 one-way points
- LATAM: Business Class to Peru from 35,000 one-way points
Free Stopovers
The ability to add a free stopover on one-way awards significantly increases the value of your points. Here are some interesting stopover opportunities:
- Stopover in Tokyo on a flight to Southeast Asia with Japan Airlines
- Stopover in Hong Kong on a flight to Australia or New Zealand with Cathay Pacific
- Stopover in Fiji on a flight to New Zealand or Australia with Fiji Airways
- Stopover in Dublin on a flight to Europe with Aer Lingus
- Stopover in Doha on a flight to Africa or Asia with Qatar Airways
Companion Fare
The annual Companion Fare benefit on Alaska credit cards offers excellent value, allowing you to add a companion to your paid ticket for just $99 plus taxes and fees (from $23). This can save you hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars on expensive itineraries.
Conclusion
Atmos Rewards represents a significant evolution for Alaska Airlines and its members, now integrating Hawaiian Airlines into a unified program. With its distance-based earning structure, generous elite benefits, and extensive partner network, Atmos Rewards offers exceptional value to Canadian travelers.
The program’s highlights include the ability to add free stopovers on one-way award tickets, access to premium cabins on prestigious partner airlines at competitive rates, and an elite qualification system that rewards long-haul flights in premium cabins.
For Canadian travelers looking to maximize the value of their travel points, Atmos Rewards is certainly worth considering as a complementary program to Aeroplan or WestJet Rewards, offering unique opportunities to travel to Asia, Oceania, and beyond.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happened to Alaska Mileage Plan and Hawaiian HawaiianMiles?
Alaska Mileage Plan was rebranded as Atmos Rewards on August 20, 2025, following the merger between Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. All Mileage Plan accounts were automatically converted to Atmos Rewards accounts, with members retaining their account numbers, point balances, and elite status.
HawaiianMiles will be officially absorbed into Atmos Rewards on October 1, 2025. At that time, HawaiianMiles members will see their miles transferred to Atmos Rewards at a 1:1 ratio. Members who have not yet linked their accounts will receive a new Atmos Rewards account number.
The rebranding and merger of these programs bring together the best features of both, while maintaining the distance-based earning structure that made Alaska Mileage Plan popular. Elite status tiers have been renamed (Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium), but the qualification thresholds and core benefits largely remain the same for the 2025 program year.
Do Atmos Rewards points expire?
No, Atmos Rewards points do not expire. This is a significant improvement over Alaska Mileage Plan’s previous policy, which stated that accounts could be deactivated after 24 months of inactivity.
While your points never expire, it’s worth noting that if your account remains completely inactive for two years, Alaska may lock the account as a security measure. In this case, you would need to call Alaska Airlines customer service to verify your identity and reactivate the account. Your point balance would remain intact.
This « no-expiration » policy gives members greater flexibility to save points for high-value redemptions without the pressure of having to generate account activity to prevent points from expiring.
How do stopovers work with Atmos Rewards?
One of the most valuable features of the Atmos Rewards program is the ability to add free stopovers to award tickets. Here’s how the stopover policy works:
Number of stopovers allowed:
- One free stopover on one-way award tickets
- Two free stopovers on round-trip award tickets
Booking rules:
- Stopovers must be in cities where your carrier operates or connects
- The stopover city must be a logical route between your origin and destination
- Stopovers can last as long as you wish (within the ticket’s validity period)
- You can book stopovers on Alaska/Hawaiian flights and partner airlines
How to book:
- For Alaska/Hawaiian flights: You can book stopovers online using the multi-city search tool
- For partner airlines: You may need to call Atmos Rewards customer service
Usage examples:
- Fly from Los Angeles to Sydney on Qantas with a stopover in Auckland
- Fly from Seattle to Bangkok on Japan Airlines with a stopover in Tokyo
- Fly from New York to Cape Town on Qatar Airways with a stopover in Doha
This stopover policy essentially allows you to visit two destinations for the price of one, significantly increasing the value of your Atmos Rewards points.
What are the best ways to earn Atmos Rewards elite status?
There are several effective strategies to earn Atmos Rewards elite status:
1. Fly long-haul premium cabins:
- International first class flights on partners booked via Alaska earn 350% of miles flown in status points
- International business class flights on partners earn 250% of miles flown
- For example, a 10,000-mile round-trip in international first class would earn 35,000 status points, almost enough for Gold status
2. Credit card spending:
- The Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite card earns 1 status point for every $2 spent with no cap
- The Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature and Atmos Rewards Visa Business cards earn 1 status point for every $3 spent (up to 30,000 status points in 2025, no cap in 2026)
- The Summit card also provides 10,000 status points annually on the account anniversary
3. Flights with partner airlines:
- Book partner flights via Alaska/Hawaiian rather than directly with the partner
- Partner flights booked via Alaska earn 100% of miles flown in status points in economy, compared to only 25-50% when booked directly
4. Status match:
- If you have elite status with another airline, you might be eligible for an Atmos Rewards status match challenge
- Complete the required flight activity within 90 days to secure status for the remainder of the qualification period
5. Tier rewards rollover:
- At the 85K, 150K, 200K, and 250K tiers, one option is to roll over 10,000 status points to the next qualification year
- This gives you a head start to re-qualify for your status
Starting in 2026, you will also be able to choose your preferred earning method (distance-based, spending-based, or segment-based), allowing you to optimize based on your travel habits.
What are the best uses of points with partner airlines?
Atmos Rewards offers several outstanding redemptions with partner airlines that provide remarkable value:
1. Japan Airlines premium cabins:
- Business class from the West Coast to Tokyo: 60,000 points one-way
- Business class from the East Coast to Tokyo: 75,000 points one-way
- First class from the West Coast to Tokyo: 75,000 points one-way
- First class from the East Coast to Tokyo: 110,000 points one-way
- These rates are significantly lower than what most other programs charge
2. Cathay Pacific to Asia:
- Business class from the US to Hong Kong: 85,000 points one-way
- First class from the US to Hong Kong: 130,000 points one-way
