The The St. Regis Mexico City is a category 7 hotel in the Marriott Bonvoy program. This means it costs between 50,000 and 70,000 points per night depending on the season.

I preferred to keep my points and pay for my stay with my Marriott Bonvoy American Express® Card given the rate I got.

Earning Marriott Bonvoy Points

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points to stay for free at over 7,000 hotels worldwide is to be a Marriott Bonvoy American Express (and/or Marriott Bonvoy Business American ExpressMD Card) cardholder.

In addition to the great welcome bonus on both cards, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar on all purchases and 5 points per dollar at Marriott locations.

And each year, you’ll earn a free hotel night certificate (35,000 point value) as well as 15 Elite nights towards your Marriott Bonvoy status.

Alternatively, you can earn Marriott Bonvoy points with American Express Membership Rewards credit cards. You can transfer Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy points at a rate of 5:6 (50,000 Membership Rewards points = 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points).

For example, with the American Express CobaltMD Card, you earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar of purchases at grocery stores, restaurants, bars, convenience stores and home delivery. It is one of the best credit cards in Canada for travellers. Find out why here.

Check out this page for all the welcome offers on cards that earn Marriott Bonvoy points.

Location

The The St. Regis Mexico City is perfectly located on Paseo de la Reforma, to discover Mexico City. It is only a few hundred meters from my previous hotel, the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel.

In the lobby of the hotel, there is a concierge and an area overlooked by a magnificent chandelier.

Checking-In

To reach the reception, you must take the elevator. The luxury of the The St. Regis Mexico City. From the reception you have a wonderful view of the Diana Fountain roundabout.

If you are staying with your children, they will appreciate the St. Regis Kids stand, with popcorn and other candy.

That’s also where every evening, a bottle of champagne is sabered, and a glass is offered to each customer present. A tradition of the St. Regis hotels all over the world.

I gave my Marriott Bonvoy American Express® Card as collateral and to pay for my stay there. With the Marriott Bonvoy American Express® Card, you earn 5 points per dollar for all your spending at Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

This is the best credit card to have if you stay at Marriott Bonvoy hotels frequently.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

The room

Because of my Marriott Bonvoy Titanium status, I was upgraded to a suite called « Executive Junior Room ». Upon entering, you will find the dressing room and the mini-bar.

Continuing towards the bedroom, there is a bathroom on the left with a large shower (which can be used as a Hammam). However, during my stay, I had pressure problems and the hot water took a long time to arrive.

I didn’t realise this until late in the evening and therefore didn’t ask for a change of room. However, as compensation, the hotel added 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to my account. A nice gesture!

The toilets are on the right.

Now the room! I particularly like the size of the room and the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Review: The St. Regis Mexico City | Marriott Bonvoy - The st. Regis Mexico City

The Butler brought glasses of champagne along with the luggage. I also appreciate the presence of a Nespresso coffee machine.

Note that you can control the lights and other features of the room from a home automation device next to the bed. However, curtains and net curtains are manual.

Review: The St. Regis Mexico City | Marriott Bonvoy - The st. Regis Mexico City-38

The room is equipped with a large television set on the desk.

This choice is rather strange: not really visible from the bed, nor from the sofa. And it takes up a lot of desk space.

Review: The St. Regis Mexico City | Marriott Bonvoy - The st. Regis Mexico City-35

The sofa in the lounge is particularly comfortable and I liked the different shades. All in all, it is a very nice room in The St. Regis Mexico City.

The indoor swimming pool, ideally heated, offers a beautiful view of Mexico City.

Two whirlpools are located on either side of the pool, themselves close to the bay window.

Gym

The gym is also bathed in natural light and the equipment is varied.

I particularly liked the space this room offers.

Kids Club

Parents will appreciate: The St. Regis Mexico City offers a Kids Club. For children aged 5 to 11, there are activities from Friday to Sunday.

The activities are varied and the space is bright. You can leave the children with the Kids Club staff from noon to 7 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. However, you must remain in the establishment.

Restaurants and bars

Terrace of the Diana restaurant

Breakfast is served in the hotel’s Diana restaurant, located on the reception level.

It is a particularly pleasant place overlooking the Fountain and rather well isolated from the noise of traffic.

No buffet: breakfast is à la carte (free for Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador members). The food is good, without being exceptional.

The hotel also offers other dining areas such as the J&G Grill (closed when I came).

The King Cole Bar, with an entrance dedicated to Krug Champagne is impressive.

Bottom Line

The The St. Regis Mexico City is one of the city’s top hotels.

The service is impeccable and I got special help from the concierge to book a COVID-19 PCR test for my return to Canada for a reasonable rate considering the rates in town (about $100 US directly at the hotel).

Would I have used between 50,000 and 70,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to spend a night there? Maybe not. But it is certainly worth the rate paid of about $250 a night considering its facilities and location.

This is a hotel I would recommend if you are in town for a short time and want to treat yourself!
