You can now redeem your Aeroplan points directly at LCBO. At the checkout, you can redeem one or more 1,000-point increments for a $10 discount on your purchase.
To take advantage of it, you must:
Milesopedia values the Aeroplan point at 2 cents; the best use is often for flights. Redeeming your points for discounts at LCBO may not necessarily be the best exchange option, but it can be convenient if you don’t have any trips planned in the near future.
In 2021, LCBO ended its association with AIR MILES and became an Aeroplan partner.
Since its inception, the partnership has allowed Aeroplan members to earn points when shopping at the 680 stores and 400 express counters of the LCBO in Ontario.
Customers earn one Aeroplan point for every $4 spent at the LCBO; in-store, on lcbo.com, on the LCBO mobile app and on VintagesShopOnline.com. Bonus points may also be available on certain products during promotions.
In addition, Aeroplan members can redeem points for LCBO gift cards on the eStore, starting at $10 for every 1,000 Aeroplan points .
For example, you will earn 12 Aeroplan points (1 point per $4 spent) when purchasing this ice wine worth $49.95.
The Aeroplan points earned are added to the rewards points you earn for this purchase with your credit card.
For example, if you use your TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card or your American Express® Aeroplan®* Card directly at the LCBO cash register, you’ll earn 1 Aeroplan point per dollar (50 Aeroplan points in the example above). Or a total of 62 Aeroplan points for this purchase.
Or, if you use your American Express Cobalt® Card directly at the LCBO, you’ll earn 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar (50 Membership Rewards points in the example above). Or a total of 62 points Aeroplan for this purchase (since Membership Rewards points are transferable to Aeroplan points at a rate of 1:1).
Or you could be even more clever and buy LCBO gift cards in grocery stores like Metro, Longo’s or Sobeys or in Circle K, Macs or 7Eleven convenience stores to get 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar, that’s 5 Aeroplan points per dollar!
Again in the above example, if you purchase a $50 LCBO gift card with your American Express Cobalt® Card while grocery shopping, you’ll earn 250 Membership Rewards points – that’s 250 Aeroplan points.
Then simply use your gift card at the LCBO cash register to purchase your ice wine (and earn 12 Aeroplan points for your purchase). In all, you’ll earn 262 Aeroplan points ( 5 times more than by using your credit card directly at the LCBO).
The first question that comes to mind when you see this partnership: could the SAQ also become an Aeroplan partner in Quebec?
There is no such partnership in Quebec with the SAQ, instead the the SAQ Inspire rewards program was created, highly popular among Quebecers. This program allows the provincial Crown corporation to have an excellent knowledge of its customers to offer particularly well-targeted promotions.
In terms of rewards, the LCBO will be offering 1 Aeroplan point for every $4 in purchases. If we value the Aeroplan point at 2 cents, this means that a $100 purchase will earn approximately 50 cents.
In comparison, SAQ Inspire offers 5 points per dollar spent. The SAQ Inspire point has a value of 1 cent: this means you’ll earn 50 cents for a $100 purchase.
Rewards are therefore equivalent, but may vary according to your use of Aeroplan points, and your accumulation of bonus points through promotions and offers.
Aeroplan counts other retailers as partners, such as Uber, Starbucks and Journie Rewards, which have their own respective programs that can be linked to the Aeroplan account. Its partnership with the LCBO is more direct, and the new option of redeeming points directly at the checkout or online makes it easier for its members to use, although not necessarily the optimal Aeroplan points redemption rate.
