Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the questions that come up most often in the Milesopedia community about Aeroplan credit cards.
What are the benefits of an Aeroplan credit card?
You earn Aeroplan points on every purchase, up to 3 points per dollar on Air Canada purchases with the American Express Reserve cards. You also get preferred pricing on Air Canada flight rewards and, with most cards, your first checked bag free. Premium cards add Maple Leaf Lounge access and priority airport services.
What is the best Aeroplan credit card to start with?
We recommend the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card: the current offer rebates the $139 annual fee in the first year, and you get your first checked bag free from your first flight. If you prefer a card with no annual fee, the CIBC Aeroplan® Visa* Card lets you earn Aeroplan points with no fixed cost.
How many Aeroplan points can I get as a welcome offer?
The welcome offer varies by card, always subject to the required spending:
- TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum: up to 20,000 points
- American Express Aeroplan Card: up to 45,000 points
- TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite: up to 50,000 points
- American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card: up to 85,000 points
- American Express Aeroplan Business Reserve Card: up to 90,000 points
- TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege: up to 100,000 points
The largest bonuses require significant spending: you need $24,000 in purchases within 12 months to earn the full 100,000 points on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege.
Who are the Aeroplan credit card issuers in Canada?
In Canada, there are three main Aeroplan credit card issuers:
- American Express Canada: personal and business cards, with 3 times the points on Air Canada purchases on the Reserve cards
- CIBC: a lineup that includes a no-annual-fee card
- TD: a full lineup, from the Visa Platinum to the Visa Infinite Privilege
Each issuer offers specific benefits, and you can hold cards from different issuers simultaneously.
How to get free baggage with an Aeroplan card?
With an Aeroplan card that includes this benefit, you and up to 8 companions on the same booking check your first bag free (23 kg/50 lb), on these conditions:
- Your Aeroplan number, the one linked to your card, is included in the booking
- The flight is operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or under the Air Canada Express brand
- You check in with Air Canada and drop off the bag at the check-in counter
You can pay for the ticket with any payment method. If your Aeroplan Elite Status or your fare already includes a free bag, the card does not add a second one. Air Canada sets out these conditions on its Aeroplan credit cards page.
Can I hold multiple Aeroplan credit cards simultaneously?
Yes. You can hold several Aeroplan cards at the same time, from TD, CIBC and American Express. For example:
- Personal and business: a personal Aeroplan card and a business Aeroplan card
- Two issuers: a TD Aeroplan card and an American Express Aeroplan card, to earn in each one's bonus categories
Keep in mind that benefits like the free first checked bag do not stack from one card to another. Each issuer also sets its own welcome offer eligibility rules: at American Express, for example, current or former holders of the same card are generally not eligible.
How to transfer points to Aeroplan from other programs?
You can transfer points to Aeroplan from several programs:
- American Express Membership Rewards: 1,000 points = 1,000 Aeroplan points
- Marriott Bonvoy: 3 Marriott Bonvoy points = 1 Aeroplan point, plus a 5,000 Aeroplan point bonus for every 60,000 points transferred
Transferring from American Express Membership Rewards, at a 1:1 ratio, is the simplest way to top up your Aeroplan balance before redeeming points. Note that a transfer is final: the points cannot go back to your American Express account.
