Usually, to get the most out of our points, it is recommended to start early to find the best price and get the most choices. However, if you’re a points rookie looking to escape this summer, it’s not too late to book a cheap round-trip ticket to Europe in the middle of summer with up to $1,000 off thanks to our strategy.

Finding the Cheapest Round-Trip Ticket to Europe

First, you must look for the most affordable entry point in Europe. You can use Google Flights’ ‘’Explore’’ feature to do so. Then, you can input your preferred departure city and flexible dates.

Google Flights will show an overview of the results, and you can spot the cheapest round-trip air tickets to Europe matching your search.

For example, we can see here that Porto is the cheapest gateway for a two-week trip to Europe in the height of summer, i.e. July-August. Round-trip airfare is $896 at the time of writing.

Using Travel Rewards to Fly to Europe Affordably

Then, you will need Travel Rewards to bring that to a cheap round-trip to Europe during this summer’s peak. The strategy we suggest is to sign up for both of these cards:

CIBC Aventura® Gold Visa* Card and CIBC Aventura® Visa Infinite* Card are excellent options.

With CIBC’s Aventura program, you can redeem 35% fewer Aventura Points when you use your credit card to pay for any type of travel, including air travel, on any site.

If you applied through our links, you could receive up to 45,000 Aventura Points as a welcome bonus with the CIBC Aventura® Gold Visa* Card and CIBC Aventura® Visa Infinite* Card. These points can then be used to reduce the cost of your airline tickets.

By subscribing to both cards during the offer period and combining your points, you could earn 90,000 Aventura points, the equivalent of $900 in travel discounts. What’s more, by reaching the required spending to unlock these bonuses, you’ll earn 5,000 Aventura points per card, for a total of 10,000 additional points. This means you could reach 100,000 Aventura points, which represents a $1,000 discount in the form of travel credit, usable on any type of travel expense, including airfare.

Another interesting advantage is that these cards offer four free airport lounge accesses, perfect for enjoying a moment of relaxation before your flight. Plus, the annual fee is free for the first year. An excellent opportunity to travel comfortably and affordably.

How do I transfer and combine Aventura points from one card to another?

By following our strategy for cheap round-trip airfare to Europe, you’ll earn Aventura points on two cards.

CIBC Rewards Program customers can « transfer » or move Aventura Points earned from one eligible Aventura credit card account to another.

You can transfer Aventura Points by calling the CIBC Rewards Centre at 1-888-232-5656 and selecting menu option #2 (Merchandise, gift cards and other rewards).

Can I apply for both CIBC Aventura Credit Cards on the same day?

Yes, you can apply for both CIBC Aventura Credit Cards on the same day: the CIBC Aventura® Visa Infinite* Card and the CIBC Aventura® Gold Visa* Card.

Please note, however, that while your application for the first Aventura credit card will probably be accepted immediately, for the second application you will most likely have to make an appointment at a CIBC branch after you have applied.

To avoid having to go to a branch, we recommend that you space your applications at least 3 months apart at the same institution.

Once you’ve accumulated those 100,000 Aventura points, book your cheap round-trip air ticket to Europe and redeem your points.

Your discount will be $1,000, thanks to the exchange and cards that offer a discount on the annual fee for the first year. Once you’ve made it to Europe at an affordable price, you can use a low-cost carrier to get anywhere you want on the Old Continent.

Don’t forget that you’ll earn over 100,000 Aventura points for your cheap round-trip ticket to Europe. In addition to the welcome bonus, you’ll also earn points on purchases you have to charge to the card to unlock it. In fact, you earn points as follows:

  • 2 points for every $1 spent on travel purchased through the CIBC Rewards Centre†
  • 1.5 points for every $1 spent at eligible gas stations, grocery stores and drug stores†
  • 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases†

Bottom Line

In general, booking early will give you the best opportunity to fly without going broke, as airfare is getting higher and higher nowadays. However, as we demonstrated, the hope of finding a cheap round-trip ticket to Europe during peak summertime is not lost if you are starting now.

If you’re a beginner and only want to sign up for one new CIBC Aventura credit card, you’ll earn enough points to get $500 off your airfare to Europe which is also worth considering.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.
