Share

WestJet points are a great way to save money the next time you’re looking to get away to a warm locale.

In this article, we share a handful of our favourite sun destinations that you can get to with your WestJet points. Whether you’re interested in relaxing on the beach, exploring a new culture, or something else entirely, you’re sure to find a suitable vacation spot in our list below.

Earning WestJet Points

You can earn WestJet Rewards points a couple different ways: by purchasing WestJet flights and WestJet/Sunwing vacation packages and by spending money on a WestJet co-branded credit card.

Flights and vacation packages

Thanks to the changes within the WestJet Rewards program that came into effect in April 2025, it’s now even easier to rack up WestJet points.

When purchasing a WestJet flight or vacation package, you’ll earn points on the following expenses:

  • base fare
  • carrier surcharges
  • seat selection
  • checked bags
  • cabin upgrade purchases

However, keep in mind that you still won’t earn points on the taxes and fees associated with your flights and vacation packages.

Credit cards

Another great way to earn WestJet points is by spending on either the WestJet RBC Mastercard or the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.

The WestJet RBC Mastercard earns 1 point per $1 spent on everyday purchases and 1.5 points per $1 spent on WestJet flights and vacation packages.

This card also typically offers a nice chunk of WestJet points as a welcome offer, and it comes with additional perks like an annual companion voucher and Member Exclusive fares.

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard earns 1.5 points per $1 spent on everyday purchases and 2 points per $1 spent on WestJet flights and vacation packages.

With this card, you’ll enjoy the following perks and benefits:

Redeeming WestJet Points

As of April 2025, you can redeem your WestJet points to cover the full cost of your WestJet/Sunwing flight or vacation package – including taxes and fees. You can also choose to use your WestJet points to just cover part of your fare, using a combination of cash and points for your flight.

WestJet points are worth 1 cent each, and you need to redeem a minimum of 2,500 points per person per direction of flight. So, for example, with 10,000 points, you could save $100 off your next flight or vacation package.

To redeem your points this way, simply sign in to your WestJet Rewards account, go through the booking process as normal, and then select the number of points you’d like to redeem when you reach the payment page.

Alternatively, you can watch for Member Exclusive fares when searching for your flights. Member Exclusive fares offer discounted options for travelling with points. To enjoy these fares, the entire base fare (excluding taxes) must be paid with points.

If you don’t have enough points to qualify for these fares or the route you’re searching doesn’t offer this option, you don’t have to worry — you can still use your points to help cover the cost of a regular fare as described just above.

Take a trip to this beautiful island just off the north coast of Honduras and soak up the sun while exploring all of nature’s fantastic offerings.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

As a bonus suggestion for those travelling from the middle of the country, consider a return flight between Winnipeg and Montego Bay, Jamaica, (with a layover in Toronto) for 79,500 WestJet points and $260.82 in taxes and fees.

While this redemption is obviously above the 70,000-point threshold, we thought it was important to showcase another option from a smaller Canadian airport even if they are a bit more expensive. Plus, Jamaica is an incredible destination known for its food, beaches, music, culture, and more, making it an ideal spot to head when escaping the chill of a Winnipeg winter.
