Transfer Amex Points to Hilton Honors: Is It Worth It?

Canadian American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred to Hilton Honors at a standard 1:1 ratio. This can help complete a balance for a specific stay, but transferring does not automatically deliver good value.
Find the room first, compare the cash rate and work out what you give up by moving your Amex points. Transfers cannot be reversed, and award availability may disappear while you wait.
The Canadian Amex hotel partners page specifies the ratio, minimum and processing time summarized below. These are Canadian program terms. A ratio advertised for a US card does not automatically apply to a Canadian account.
| Condition | Rule |
|---|---|
| Base ratio | 1,000 Amex points = 1,000 Hilton points |
| Minimum | 1,000 Amex points |
| Increments | 100 Amex points |
| Estimated time | 5 business days |
| Transfer back to Amex | Not possible once transferred |
Your Hilton account must be in your own name. The Canadian Membership Rewards terms explain that you need to link your partner account before transferring. Once transferred, points are governed by Hilton's rules and cannot be returned to Amex.
The American Express Cobalt® Card earns 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar at eligible stand-alone grocery stores in Canada, subject to its combined food-category spending cap. The American Express® Gold Rewards Card earns 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar at eligible stand-alone drugstores in Canada. At the base 1:1 transfer ratio, these Amex points can then become the same number of Hilton Honors points.
| Card | Eligible Canadian purchases | Example spending | Amex points earned | Hilton points after transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| American Express Cobalt Card | Groceries, 5 points per dollar, within the combined cap | CA$1,000 | 5,000 | 5,000 |
| American Express Gold Rewards Card | Drugstores, 2 points per dollar | CA$500 | 1,000 | 1,000 |
The Cobalt's 5-point rate applies to a combined CA$2,500 in net purchases per calendar month across eligible grocery, dining, and food and grocery delivery categories in Canada. Purchases beyond the cap earn 1 point per dollar, and the counter resets on the first day of each month. Bonus earning depends on the merchant's category, Amex acceptance and payment terms. Gold Rewards purchases must also be recognized in the eligible category.
These figures illustrate earning rather than recommend automatic transfers. For example, 5,000 Hilton points are worth about CA$25 using the estimate of 0.5 Canadian cents per point, while the original 5,000 Amex points can cover CA$50 of eligible travel. Earning 5 points per dollar therefore does not mean a 5% Hilton cash-back return. Compare the specific booking before transferring.
Our Membership Rewards transfer tutorial explains the general process. Screens may change. The quoted processing time is an estimate, and a room you find today is not held while your points are in transit.
Use this formula: cash cost avoided, minus any remaining charges, divided by the number of points used. Multiply the dollar result by 100 to express the value in cents per point.
For comparison, the Canadian Flexible Points Travel Program lets you redeem 1,000 Amex points for CA$10 toward an eligible travel purchase. That is 1 Canadian cent per Amex point for that redemption option, rather than a guaranteed value for every use of points.
Milesopedia generally estimates Hilton points at 0.5 Canadian cents each. At a 1:1 ratio, a speculative transfer can therefore exchange an Amex point redeemable for 1 cent toward eligible travel for a Hilton point estimated at half that value. Our guide to using Hilton Honors points explains how to look beyond the average.
The examples below illustrate a night costing 60,000 Hilton points. They are not observed hotel rates or guaranteed award availability. We assume that you transfer all 60,000 Amex points needed and that no additional room charges remain on the reward booking.
| Comparable cash rate | Value per Hilton point | Alternative use of 60,000 Amex points |
|---|---|---|
| CA$300 | 0.5 Canadian cents | CA$600 toward eligible travel |
| CA$750 | 1.25 Canadian cents | CA$600 toward eligible travel |
A high cash-equivalent value only helps if the property suits your trip and you would actually pay the comparable cash rate. Conversely, transferring just 2,000 points to complete an existing Hilton balance can make sense even when transferring the full cost of the stay would not.
A transfer bonus can change the calculation. Verify that an offer is actually available in your account, including its dates and conditions. An old promotion article does not establish that the promotion is still running. This guide uses the Canadian base ratio of 1:1 without assuming a bonus.
Eligible Silver, Gold and Diamond members can receive a fifth night free on qualifying standard-room reward stays paid entirely with points, under the Hilton Honors terms. Compare Hilton's total for the full stay instead of automatically multiplying one night's price by four. Points & Money bookings do not qualify in the same way.

An Amex transfer creates Hilton points, not a Free Night Reward certificate. A certificate covers an eligible standard-room night under its own availability, exclusions and expiry rules. It cannot replace one of the five nights paid entirely with points to trigger the fifth-night-free benefit.
Our Hilton Free Night Certificate guide, including hotel ideas, explains how to book, when the reward expires and which restrictions to check. The Hilton hotel brands guide can also help you choose between a large chain brand and a collection of individual properties.
The Canadian Hilton Honors American Express Card earns Hilton Honors points directly. It does not earn Membership Rewards points that you then transfer. It also includes Gold status under its terms, so distinguish the two rewards programs when choosing a card.

If you pay for travel with points transferred to another program, check your card's insurance certificates. Transferring points does not guarantee that every travel insurance benefit applies.
