A Hilton Honors free night certificate can get you a night at a Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives, a Conrad in Bora Bora, or a luxury hotel in Los Cabos. Its main advantage is that it has no fixed points cap. When an eligible property offers a Standard Room Reward, the certificate can replace the points required for that night.
With the launch of the Hilton Honors American Express Card in Canada, you can now receive this benefit without a U.S. credit card. It deserves its own place when you assess the welcome offer.
Here is how to earn and use the certificate, followed by 18 hotels to consider. Certificate bookings are made through Hilton Honors.
Why this certificate can be valuable
A Hilton certificate covers one eligible night. It is not a hotel credit to spend or a balance of points to transfer. The hotel's cash rate can therefore be much higher than your card's annual fee.
The key requirement is the available award category. A room offered for cash or as a Premium Room Reward is not enough. You need Standard Room Reward availability. At a luxury resort, that category may be a villa with a pool; at another hotel, it may be an entry-level room.
The certificate can be used at hotels that would otherwise require many points or a high cash payment. In either case, standard room award availability is essential.
A night costing several thousand dollars can give you an experience that would otherwise be out of reach. To measure your actual savings, compare that rate with the price of the hotel you would have booked without the certificate.
How to earn one in Canada
The launch offer for the Hilton Honors American Express® Card includes up to 70,000 Hilton Honors points and a Free Night Reward:
- 60,000 points and the certificate: after CA$3,000 in purchases in your first 3 months;
- An additional 10,000 points: after CA$500 in purchases in month 13;
- Annual fee: CA$150, including the first year;
- Offer ends: January 11, 2027.
Under American Express Canada's offer terms, Hilton emails the reward code within 16 weeks after you meet the spending requirement. Your Card account must be active and in good standing when the reward is issued. Check the email address linked to your Hilton Honors account.
This certificate is part of the welcome offer. The Canadian card's annual bonus after CA$12,000 in purchases is 50,000 points, rather than another certificate. Annual certificates from the U.S. Aspire card and spending-based certificates from the Surpass card belong to different products.
See our Hilton card welcome offer analysis for the earning rates and included Gold status.
The rules to know
The Canadian terms cover one night in a standard room for 2 people, subject to availability, on any day of the week.
- Validity: 12 months from the date the certificate is issued. Your stay must be completed by the expiry date.
- Booking: call Hilton Honors at 1-800-446-6677.
- Included charges: applicable room taxes and resort fees for the night covered by the certificate.
- Incidentals: you pay for meals, activities, transportation, and other extras that are not included in your booking.
- Transfers: the certificate is not transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash or points.
- Excluded properties: check Hilton's official exclusion list, which includes several residences and vacation ownership properties.
An eligible hotel may have no standard room awards available for your dates. Gold or Diamond upgrades also remain subject to the programme's rules and availability. A certificate does not guarantee a suite or an overwater villa.
The Maldives and island escapes
This selection includes 18 hotels where you can consider using a certificate, subject to standard room award availability. The sample cash rates are in U.S. dollars. They are published examples, rather than guaranteed rates for your trip.
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

This hotel is a clear example of what a certificate can cover. The standard category is a Reef Villa with Pool, between the beach and lagoon, subject to availability. Here, standard describes a Hilton booking category rather than the comfort level of an ordinary hotel room.
Published sample rates for this hotel range from US$2,200 to US$2,800 per night, with some exceeding US$3,000. A documented stay in April 2025 combined a points booking with 3 nights paid for using certificates. These examples illustrate the value you might receive, without assigning every certificate a fixed US$3,000 or US$4,000 value.
Standard award availability can be very limited. Budget for the yacht transfer and meals as well: a covered room night does not make the entire stay free. The photo shows the resort and does not guarantee a particular villa category.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

This Conrad is another option for using a certificate in the Maldives. Its villas, islands linked by a footbridge, and underwater restaurant offer a different experience from the Waldorf Astoria.
The available award category can vary. Check the exact villa name and Standard Room Reward label; do not assume every overwater villa qualifies. Add the seaplane transfer and on-property spending to your budget. Dining at the underwater restaurant is a separate experience that is not included in the certificate.

Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa

Hilton Maldives Amingiri is another option if you are looking for a villa in the Maldives, with access from Malé by boat.
Compare its standard award availability with other properties in the country before choosing your dates. Transfer arrangements and the booked villa category matter as much as the cash rate. The Hilton name does not mean that every villa at the resort is covered by a certificate.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui

A certificate can get you a night at the Conrad in Bora Bora, but an overwater villa is not guaranteed. The standard category may be a garden-view suite, so check the room offered for your dates.
The appeal is covering a night at a sought-after property, then arranging the rest of your stay around your budget. If you specifically want an overwater villa, confirm the category and any supplement before booking. A higher-category villa's cash rate should not be used to value a certificate applied to an entry-level suite.

Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island

As one example, a night at this Waldorf Astoria in the Seychelles was listed at US$2,059, with standard room award availability at the time of the search.
This shows how an expensive night can meet the certificate's conditions. It does not establish current availability at the same rate. Check access to the island and on-property costs before choosing this destination, particularly for a short stay.

Mango House Seychelles

Mango House, part of LXR, offers a different Seychelles experience. This property on Mahé may suit travellers who want to combine a hotel stay with exploring the island.
Your certificate must match an available standard room. Suites and rooms with pools do not automatically qualify simply because they appear in the hotel's photos. Compare the rate for the eligible room with the other nights in your stay.

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

Private-pool rooms and a setting beside the Pacific make Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal worth considering for a luxury stay in Mexico.
One published rate reference for this hotel is around US$1,600 per night, with large variations by date. Check standard award availability before choosing based on a high cash rate. It can also be an option for adding a night to an existing Los Cabos trip.

Conrad Punta de Mita

Milesopedia has a concrete example: in our Conrad Punta de Mita review, a 4-night stay listed at US$3,811, including taxes, was paid for with 4 certificates from U.S. cards.
That works out to about US$953 per night for that particular stay. The review illustrates how certificates can be used at this hotel; the current Canadian welcome offer provides one certificate. The upgrade described in the review depended on status and availability, rather than being a guaranteed certificate benefit.

Zemi Beach House, Anguilla

This LXR property on Shoal Bay is an option for beach lovers who prefer the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean.
For a longer stay, use the certificate for the night that would cost you the most, provided a standard room award is available. Check flights and transfers to Anguilla as well: the room savings should make sense for the trip as a whole.

Grand Wailea, Maui

Grand Wailea in Hawaii is a Waldorf Astoria resort that can suit a couples' getaway or a family holiday.
Published sample rates range from US$950 to US$2,000 per night. The certificate covers eligible accommodation for 2 people; confirm the rules for children or additional guests. Also note that Ho'olei at Grand Wailea appears separately on Hilton's exclusion list.

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

This Waldorf Astoria lets you use a certificate during a Los Angeles trip, with a different experience from an island resort.
A night can fit into an existing itinerary without the transfers needed for a Maldives stay. Compare the standard room's price for your dates: a prestigious brand alone does not guarantee a worthwhile use of your certificate.

Waldorf Astoria Park City

Park City can be appealing when room rates rise during ski season. Prices may be much lower at other times, so an annual average tells you little about the value of your specific night.
Start by finding a standard room award for your dates, then calculate the remaining costs. The certificate does not pay for ski passes, equipment rentals, or transportation. Its value therefore also depends on the trip you want to take.

Hotel del Coronado

This Curio Collection hotel near San Diego offers another option for a seaside stay.
Distinguish the main hotel from nearby properties with similar names. Beach Village at The Del and Shore House at The Del appear on Hilton's official exclusion list. Check the exact property and room name before comparing rates or calling to use your certificate.

Motto New York City Chelsea

Motto in Chelsea is an option when New York cash rates are high. It is less luxurious than a Waldorf Astoria, but may be a better fit for a trip you already plan to take.
This is a useful approach: a well-located New York hotel during an expensive period may save more of your actual budget than a dream night that requires an entirely new trip. Check the standard award category and the total price of your alternative.

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

This canal-side hotel lets you use a certificate for a luxury city break in Amsterdam.
A night can mark a special occasion or extend a Netherlands itinerary. Check the standard room's price on your chosen date and compare other Amsterdam options. You do not have to choose the destination with the highest theoretical nightly rate.

Conrad London St. James

Conrad London St. James' location near Westminster can be useful for a short London stay.
Our Conrad London St. James review describes the property in more detail. Check standard award availability and compare the cash price for the same dates. Status benefits remain subject to the rules that apply to your stay.

Conrad Tokyo

Conrad Tokyo is an option for including a luxury hotel night in a Japan trip, particularly for its rooms and Shiodome location.
Check the standard room's total price and available dates. A particular view or suite shown in the gallery may not match the category you can book with a certificate. This option makes most sense when Tokyo is already part of your itinerary.
Susona Bodrum

Susona Bodrum, part of LXR, adds an option on Türkiye's Aegean coast to this selection.
Seasonal price differences can change whether a certificate is worthwhile. Compare the standard room rate during your stay, along with dining and transportation arrangements. Higher-category villas and suites shown on the website are not automatically available as standard room awards.
How to book your free night
- Check your certificate. Find your Hilton Honors email, reward code, and expiry date. Allow for the issuance timeline before planning a trip around this benefit.
- Search Hilton's website. Enter your dates and choose to use points. Searching several dates can help you find an eligible room.
- Look for Standard Room Reward. Note the exact room type. Premium Room Reward availability does not qualify for the certificate.
- Compare the cash rate. Use the same room type, occupancy, and comparable cancellation terms.
- Call 1-800-446-6677. Ask to book with your certificate. Confirm the dates, room, included guests, and any additional charges.
- Keep your confirmation. Check the cancellation deadline and make sure the certificate has been applied. Do not assume Hilton will extend its validity.
You can add a certificate night to a paid stay or a points booking under Hilton's terms. Ask the agent whether separate reservations are required and whether you will keep the same room.
Combining it with fifth-night-free
The fifth-night-free benefit for eligible members applies to standard room stays of 5 or more nights booked entirely with points. A certificate night does not replace a points night when qualifying for this benefit.
One way to combine the benefits is to book 5 eligible nights with points, with the fifth night free, then add a sixth night using your certificate. You need enough points and the necessary award availability.
Our guide to using Hilton Honors points explains other programme options. The Hilton Honors programme page also provides Milesopedia's points valuation.
How to value your certificate
Start with the price of the room you can actually book using your certificate. Leave out higher-category villas and suites whose rates do not reflect the available standard room award.
Keep 2 figures separate: the value of the covered accommodation and your actual savings. If a certificate replaces a CA$2,500 luxury room, but your original choice was a CA$450 hotel, your budget savings do not automatically equal the luxury property's rate.
Finally, compare the total cost of the stay: other nights, flights, transfers, meals, and activities. A Conrad in Mexico or a London hotel may be a better use for you than a distant island, even with a lower nightly cash rate.
