Triangle Rewards: The Basics

Triangle Rewards is Canadian Tire’s loyalty program, which lets you earn Canadian Tire (CT) Money on almost all of your purchases. The program was launched in 2018, building on the already existing Canadian Tire Money loyalty program that had been in place since 1958. The new Triangle Rewards program eventually digitized the famous CT currency and expanded to other retail brands that existed as part of the Canadian Tire Corporation.

The Triangle Rewards program is free to join, and you can easily sign up for a membership by going to the program’s website, clicking Join Now, and providing some basic information. Once you’re enrolled in the program, you’ll get a Triangle Rewards member number, and you’ll be able to start earning CT Money immediately.

To earn CT Money on eligible purchases, you need to scan your membership card at the check-out or input the number for online purchases. To make accessing your membership easy, you can download the Triangle Rewards app and/or add your membership card to your phone’s digital wallet.

Alternatively, you can pick up a physical membership card and keychain tags at participating Canadian Tire locations and then register this membership number online prior to using it.

How does CT Money work?

Depending on your age, you may remember when Canadian Tire gave out physical paper money that would often end up in your car’s glove compartment or a random kitchen drawer. The days of stacking up your collection of bills are gone, however, as the paper Canadian Tire (CT) Money was fully transitioned to a digital format in 2020.

With this fully digital set-up earning and redeeming with Canadian Tire and Triangle Rewards is now easier than ever. All of your rewards earnings are tracked through your Triangle Rewards account via the app or website, so you’ll never lose track of your accumulated savings.

Earning CT Money

As a member of Triangle Rewards, you can earn CT Money when you shop at Canadian Tire (both in person and online). Plus, you can also earn at the following partnered retail brands:

  • Mark’s/L’Équipeur
  • Atmosphere
  • Sport Chek
  • Party City
  • Pro Hockey life
  • Sports Rousseau
  • Hockey Experts
  • L’Entrepôt du Hockey
  • Sports Experts (participating locations only)

To earn at Canadian Tire and the listed retailers, just show your membership card when you check out to earn 0.4% back in CT Money on the pre-tax amount of your purchase. For example, if you make a purchase for $100 (pre-tax), you’ll earn $0.40 back in CT Money.

As a Triangle Rewards member, you also earn CT Money when you purchase fuel at Canadian Tire’s Gas+/Essence+ and at Petro-Canada. By scanning your membership card and paying with either cash or debit, you get 3 cents per litre back in CT Money. Comparatively, if you pay with a non-Triangle credit card, you’ll only earn 0.5 cents per litre.

You can also earn additional CT Money and save even more with one of the two Triangle Rewards Mastercards (which we’ll talk about just below) and with additional partners like RBC and WestJet.

Redeeming CT Money

Redeeming your CT Money is simple, and it’s easy to put toward items you actually want at Canadian Tire. Each $1 you earn in CT Money is worth $1 Canadian, so keeping track of your savings is straightforward.

You can redeem your accumulated CT Money whenever you want, for the exact amount you’d like (to the penny), with no minimum redemption requirements. Just tell the cashier exactly how much you’d like to redeem and they’ll take if off your final bill (or you can select your desired amount when you check-out online).

Additionally, if you happen to have some of Canadian Tire’s paper money kicking around, you’re also welcome to redeem that or have it transferred to your digital Triangle Rewards account. Just be aware that paper money can only be redeemed in person at Canadian Tire locations.

Your digital CT Money can be redeemed at Canadian Tire’s physical stores and on its website, as well as at all of the partnered merchants listed in the section above. However, your CT Money cannot be used to purchase gas, alcohol, tobacco products, gift cards, to pay off your Triangle credit card, or on a few other ineligible fees/items.

Also, CT Money never expires, so there’s no rush to spend it.

Weekly personalized offers

As a Triangle Rewards member, one of the best ways to amp up your savings at Canadian Tire and its partners is with personalized offers. Each week you’ll get a bunch of offers tailored to your spending habits through your online/in-app Triangle Rewards account and/or in your email.

Examples of the type of offers you can expect to see include:

  • Spend $80 at Canadian Tire and get $10 back in CT Money
  • Spend $20 at Party City and get $5 back in CT Money
  • 20x CT Money on specific products or categories

It’s important to note that you need to activate any offer that you want to take advantage of, so make sure that you check your account and click Activate on the relevant offers before you make your next purchase.

Your personalized offers can also be stacked on other discounts, promotions, and earning opportunities, letting you really amplify your savings. Plus, you can also earn the bonus CT Money on top of the elevated earning rates you get with the Triangle Rewards Mastercards.

You can also swap your offers within your account to find ones that fit with an upcoming purchase that you have planned or a category that you spend in often.

Example of savings

To see just how valuable these offers can be, let’s imagine that you’re buying a new BBQ at Canadian Tire that costs $500. You check the personalized offers in your Triangle Account, and you see one offer for 10x on BBQ and Outdoor Cooking and another for Spend $80 and Get $10 Back in CT Money.

Before making your purchase, you activate both of these offers, and head to your local Canadian Tire to buy the BBQ. At the check-out, you scan your Triangle Rewards membership card and instantly earn the bonus CT Money from the offers. In this case, this equals $20 for the 10x earning rate (or 4% back in CT Money) and $10 for spending more than $80, giving you a total savings of $30 in CT Money!

Earn More With a Triangle Mastercard

If you’re a frequent shopper at Canadian Tire and its partners, having one of the two co-branded Triangle Rewards Mastercards is a great way to maximize your savings.

Both the Triangle™ Mastercard® and the Triangle™ World Elite Mastercard® give you the ability to earn CT Money on all your purchases without having to pay an annual fee. The cards can also save you money when you fill up your gas tank, and the World Elite option provides additional perks like car rental insurance and roadside assistance.

To better understand how the two Triangle credit cards can help you save at Canadian Tire, let’s look at their key perks.

Earn up to 4% CT Money on Purchase

First, the Triangle™ Mastercard® and the Triangle™ World Elite Mastercard® both earn 4% back in CT Money on almost everything at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Party City, Atmosphere, Pro Hockey Life, Sports Rousseau, Hockey Experts, L’Entrepôt du Hockey and participating Sports Experts.

This 4% earning rate is 10x the standard 0.4% rate that standard Triangle Rewards members earn. Plus, as a Triangle credit card holder, you’ll also be eligible for exclusive promotions that can help you save even more.

For example, you could take advantage of the 30x bonus offer from the image below and stack it with a personalized offer for “Spend $80 and get $10.” If you did this for a $100 purchase, you’d get around $22 back in CT Money or nearly a 25% savings!

Save at eligible gas stations

Your Triangle Mastercard can also save you money every time you buy gas at a participating gas station.

The Triangle™ Mastercard® gets you 5 cents per litre back in CT Money when you fill up at Gas+ and Petro-Canada locations, while the Triangle™ World Elite Mastercard® earns 7 cents per litre back on premium fuel and 5 cents per litre back on all other fuels (plus you also earn Petro points when you link your accounts).

Based on these savings rates, you can earn between $2.50 and $3.50 in CT Money savings for every 50 litres of fuel that you purchase. This means that if you fill up your tank twice a week, every week of the year, these savings would total between $260 and $364 annually!

Comparatively, Triangle Rewards members without one of these credit cards earn 3 cents back when they purchase fuel at Petro-Canada and Gas+ and pay with cash or debit.

Earn CT Money on all purchases

The two Triangle Mastercards also help you save extra money at Canadian Tire every time you make a purchase. That’s because both of the cards earn CT Money no matter where you’re spending your money.

With the Triangle™ Mastercard®, you earn CT Money at the following rates:

  • Earn 4% back in CT Money at Canadian Tire and partnered retailers
  • Earn 1.5% back in CT Money on groceries (on the first $12,000 per year; excludes Costco and Walmart).
  • Earn 0.5% back in CT Money everywhere else

Alternatively, if you spend with the Triangle World Elite Mastercard, you can earn the following rates:

  • Earn 4% back in CT Money at Canadian Tire and partnered retailers
  • Earn 3% back in CT Money on groceries (on the first $12,000 per year; excludes Costco and Walmart).
  • Earn 0.5% back in CT Money everywhere else

The World Elite card also comes with additional perks like purchase protection for eligible items, car rental collision insurance, roadside assistance plan, and more. Just keep in mind that this more premium card has a minimum personal income requirement of $80,000 or household income requirement of $150,000.

Stack Offers, Bonus Days and Promotions

If you’re looking to really maximize your Canadian Tire savings potential, you’ll find it helpful to stack your personalized offers, watch out for Bonus Days promotions, and time your CT Money spending to line up with redemption promotions.

In fact, stacking your weekly personalized offers with Bonus Days promotions adds up quickly. Just take a look at the examples in the image below.

CT stacking personalized offers with credit card EN

Then, once you have a bunch of CT Money saved up from your purchases, you can further maximize its value by waiting for a redemption promotion. These events give you extra value when you redeem certain amounts during a specific time frame.

For example, as you can see in the image below, you could get $10 back in CT Money when you redeem $50 or more. This is equivalent to an added savings of 20%!

Triangle Rewards: Best Tips to Earn and Redeem - Triangle Rewards Redemption Bonus

Triangle Select

If you often shop at Canadian Tire and its partners, you may benefit from signing up for Triangle Select. This premium subscription service is offered by Triangle Rewards and gives you elevated earning rates on your eligible purchases, as well as extra perks at Canadian Tire and select retailers.

For a fee of $89/year, you will earn 10x CT Money on most in-store purchases and 20x CT Money on select brands, plus waived shipping fees, a welcome gift, and more. For shoppers who spend a considerable amount of money at Canadian Tire each year, this service may provide even more savings.

Earn and Save with Additional Triangle Rewards Partners

Yet another way to earn CT Money and save at Canadian Tire is by linking your eligible RBC credit card to your Triangle Rewards account to get 3x the CT Money.

Thanks to this partnership, your earning rate at Canadian Tire and its partner brands increases from 0.4¢ per $1 spent to 1.2¢ per $1 spent. To enjoy this elevated earning rate, you must link your RBC credit card to your Triangle Rewards account, scan your Triangle Rewards membership card at the check-out and then pay with your linked RBC credit card.

Plus, with your purchase, you’ll also get all the rewards associated with being an RBC cardholder, whether that’s earning transferable Avion points, British Airways Avios, or cash back.

Additionally, there’s a secondary level to the RBC x Canadian Tire partnership, which is between Avion Rewards and Triangle Rewards. This means that you can choose to convert your RBC Avion points to CT Money at a rate of 140 Avion points = $1 CT Money.

That said, we wouldn’t recommend this option as it represents a fairly low redemption value for your Avion points. By converting your points, you get a value of approximately 0.71 cents per Avion point which is similar to the value you can get when you redeem Avion points through RBC Rewards for gift cards and merchandise, but it’s well below the potential value you can get for these points when transferred to airline/hotel loyalty programs and used for travel.

Earn CT Money with WestJet

Another way to save at Canadian Tire is to earn CT Money everywhere possible. By linking your WestJet Rewards account to Triangle Rewards account, you can earn rewards with both programs at the same time!

  • Earn 1 WestJet point for every $2 spent at participating Canadian Tire and partnered retailers. (This is on top of the CT Money you earn.)
  • Earn 0.4% CT Money on eligible WestJet purchases (e.g., personal airfare)
  • Earn 1% CT Money on eligible WestJet purchases when you pay with your Triangle Mastercard
Triangle and WestJet savings EN

Additionally, you can transfer your WestJet points to CT Money at a rate of 120 WestJet points = $1 CT Money. Although this is a bit below the standard WestJet redemption rate of 100 WestJet points = $1 when redeemed for travel, it’s a good option if you happen to have a WestJet balance and no intentions of travelling.

Bottom Line

Anyone looking to save money at Canadian Tire will find that earning CT Money is easy thanks to Triangle Rewards and Canadian Tire’s many merchant partners.

Whether you’re earning with partnered retailers like Mark’s, Party City, and Sport Chek, one of the two Triangle Mastercards, or other program partners like RBC and WestJet, you won’t have any trouble building up your CT Money balance and earning solid savings on just about everything Canadian Tire offers.
