Avios: Book an Award Ticket on Iberia
Loading article…
Iberia Club is the Avios programme you can put to work from Canada. Iberia flies Toronto to Madrid nonstop, and no Canadian card earns its Avios directly: you feed them in from the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite or from transferable points, then book on Iberia's own site.
What makes the programme worth your attention is how it prices a seat. Iberia bands its awards by distance and by a published peak calendar, not by the cash fare, so the same flight can swing by thousands of Avios depending on the week you choose.
On top of that, Iberia Club runs discount waves that take a percentage off the Avios price on selected routes. The most recent wave took up to 20% off, on bookings made by September 23, 2026 and travel through March 18, 2027.
Below, we go through what the Toronto route is worth to you, how Iberia actually prices an award, and the four ways you can build an Avios balance from here.
How Iberia’s Avios discounts work
Iberia Club runs Avios discount waves several times a year on a selected list of routes. Each wave takes a fixed percentage off the Avios price, leaves the taxes and fees where they are, and stacks on top of whatever the peak or off-peak calendar already gives you.
The shape repeats every time: a short booking window against a long travel window. The most recent wave closed for bookings on September 23, 2026 and covers travel through March 18, 2027. That is close to six months of usable dates against a handful of days to decide, which is exactly why a prepared account beats a fast one.
What holds true from one wave to the next:
- The discount lands on the Avios price only. Taxes, fees and carrier surcharges stay exactly where they were.
- An eligible route list comes with each wave, never the whole network, and it changes every time.
- Tiers differ by route, and the deepest one rarely sits on a transatlantic flight.
- Economy and business class both qualify, though the percentage often differs between the two.
- You book on Iberia's own site or through its customer service centre, not through a partner programme.
- Flights operated by Iberia, Iberia Express and Iberia Regional Air Nostrum count.
- No stacking. A wave does not combine with another promotion or discount.
One pattern repeats across waves and is worth planning around: the deepest tier usually sits on intra-European routes, while transatlantic, Latin American and North African routes get a smaller percentage. Read the headline number as a ceiling, then check what your own route actually gets.
The most recent wave showed exactly that on the route that matters to you: Toronto–Madrid came in at 15% off, not the 20% in the headline.
Included destinations
The route list changes with every wave, but its shape repeats: heavy coverage inside Europe, plus a rotating set of long-haul cities. Destinations that have appeared in recent waves give you a sense of the range:
- North America, Central America, and Caribbean: Toronto, Chicago, New York, Washington, Miami, Orlando, Panama, Santo Domingo, San Jose (Costa Rica), Mexico City, Monterrey, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Guatemala City
- South America: Buenos Aires, Fortaleza, Recife, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, São Paulo, Santiago de Chile, Caracas,
- Africa: Marrakech, Dakar, Cairo
What this means from Canada
Canada now has a direct line into the Avios world. Iberia has flown Toronto (YYZ) to Madrid (MAD) nonstop since June 13, 2026, five times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. That puts Spain within one flight of you and the rest of Europe within one connection.
Discount waves reach transatlantic routes, not only short European hops, and that is where a percentage off earns its keep: a slice off a five-figure business class price is worth far more than the same slice off Madrid–Lisbon. Iberia publishes the eligible route list with each wave, and it changes every time.
Through Madrid you connect onward to 46 destinations across Spain and more than 60 across the rest of Europe, so treat the route as a gateway rather than a single city. That reach is what makes an Iberia Club balance useful to you even when Madrid itself is not where you are headed.
What Toronto–Madrid costs in Avios
Toronto gives you the shortest Iberia hop across the Atlantic, and Iberia bands its awards by distance, so this route prices below the longer transatlantic runs. Line that up with the Avios you need and Madrid becomes one of the more reachable European cities on points from Canada.
Two things decide what you pay. The first is the distance band your route falls into. The second is whether your date sits in Iberia's peak or off-peak calendar, and an off-peak date costs meaningfully fewer Avios than a peak one on the very same seat. Iberia publishes that calendar well ahead, so you can plan around it instead of reacting to it.
The aircraft is worth knowing before you pick a cabin. Iberia flies Toronto with the Airbus A321XLR, a single-aisle jet carrying 182 seats across business and economy in the airline's newer Airspace cabin. Business here is a proper lie-flat seat, and that is the cabin where an Avios redemption usually beats the cash fare by the widest margin.
Availability is the constraint that decides your trip, not the price. Summer dates to Europe go early, business seats go earliest of all, and a single fixed week will usually come back empty. Searching a wide spread of dates on Iberia's own site is what separates a booked award from a browsed one.
One habit protects you here: price the trip on Iberia's own site before you move a single point across. A transfer into Avios cannot be reversed, and you do not want a balance parked in the wrong programme because the seat you counted on was never released.
A short balance still gets you on the plane. Avios & Money covers part of the fare in points and the rest in cash, and a discount wave applies to that split the same way it applies to a full award. It keeps a near-miss balance useful instead of idle.
How to Earn Avios
Iberia Club is part of the Avios family of airline loyalty programs, which includes British Airways Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Finnair Plus, Vueling Club, and Loganair Loyalty.
Thanks to the Avios program’s multiple transfer partners and the transferrability of Avios between the different airline programs, it’s actually not very difficult to build up your Avios account balance with Iberia or the other member airlines.
For Canadians, there are four main ways to earn Avios:
- Flying with Iberia, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, or another partnered airline through which you earn Avios on eligible cash fares based on your route and fare class
- Spending on the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite credit card
- Transferring Avion points from eligible Avion-earning RBC credit cards
- Transferring points from other loyalty programs to Avios
British Airways credit card
The fastest way to build Avios from Canada is the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite, the only credit card in the country that earns Avios directly rather than through a conversion.
The earn rate splits three ways, and the headline number is narrower than it looks: 3 Avios per $1 spent with British Airways and BA Holidays, 2 Avios per $1 on dining and food delivery, and 1 Avios per $1 on everything else. The annual fee is $165, and the current welcome offer pays 50,000 Avios once you put $6,000 of eligible purchases on the card within your first 90 days.
What you net in year one: $835. The 50,000-Avios bonus is worth $1,000 at our 2-cent valuation, and the $165 fee comes off that. This is your gain before you have earned a single Avios on everyday spending.
Moving those Avios onward is straightforward. Link your British Airways Club account to your Iberia Club account, then request a transfer of part or all of your balance. The card fills the first account; Iberia Club is where you spend, and the hop between them costs you nothing.
The Avios family of airline loyalty programs is a great way to access redemptions such as Iberia Club awards out of Toronto and Qatar Airways QSuites. Just keep in mind that transferring Avios between programs is usually instantaneous; however, it does occasionally take a couple of days, so plan accordingly if you’re planning to take advantage of this promotion.

RBC Avion credit cards
Another fantastic way to build up your Avios balance is by transferring RBC Avion points earned with one of RBC’s Avion-branded credit cards.
RBC Avion points can be transferred to British Airways Club Avios at a rate of 1:1. Once they’re in your British Airways Club account, you can then transfer them onward to Iberia Club or the other Avios programs.
There are also occasionally transfer bonuses available that can give you up to 30% more Avios, so keep your eyes open for these opportunities to maximize your redemption value.

American Express Cobalt Card
The Cobalt gives you a second door into Avios, and this one does not go through RBC. American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to The British Airways Club at 1,000 points for 1,000 Avios, with a 1,000-point minimum per transfer. From there you move them into Iberia Club like any other Avios balance.
This card is for you if your credit score is in good shape and you would rather build a balance of transferable points than tie yourself to a single airline programme. If your file is still thin, the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite stays the most direct route into Avios. The card below gives you the earn rates and the fee that apply.
The arithmetic works differently here: the Cobalt lives on its earn rate rather than its bonus. That bonus pays up to 15,000 points across twelve months, worth $255 at 1.7 cents, against $191.88 in fees. On the $2,500-a-month profile our card page uses, it still returns $1,491 in year one after fees, thanks to the 5x on food and drink. The RBC card hits hard immediately; the Cobalt works across twelve months.

Other transfer options
In addition to the previously mentioned ways to earn Avios, you can also stack your account balance by transferring from the following loyalty programs:
- American Express Membership Rewards to British Airways Club at a ratio of 1:1, with the occasional transfer bonus.
- Marriott Bonvoy to Iberia Club or British Airways Club at a ratio of 3:1. This option also gives you a bonus of 5,000 Avios if you transfer 60,000 points at once. This means that your 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points net you 25,000 Avios.
Bottom Line
Iberia Club deserves a balance if Europe is anywhere on your list. You reach Madrid nonstop from Toronto, the award price follows distance and the peak calendar rather than the cash fare, and a discount wave takes a further slice off when your dates line up with one.
Our practical advice: open your British Airways Club account and link it to Iberia Club before you need it. Waves arrive with short booking windows, and you do not want to spend one of those days waiting on a transfer to land. The most recent wave closed on September 23, 2026, for travel through March 18, 2027.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Iberia Airlines fly to in Canada?
Iberia flies one nonstop route to Canada: Toronto (YYZ) to Madrid (MAD), which opened on June 13, 2026 and operates five times a week on the Airbus A321XLR. From anywhere else in Canada you connect, most often through Toronto or through another oneworld hub.
Does Iberia discount its award flights?
Yes, in waves rather than permanently. Iberia Club takes a percentage off the Avios price on a list of selected routes, with a short booking window and a much longer travel window. The most recent wave took up to 20% off, on bookings made by September 23, 2026 for travel through March 18, 2027. Iberia posts each new wave on its Avios booking page.
Is there an Avios credit card in Canada?
In Canada, the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite is the only credit card that earns Avios directly. The British Airways Club Avios that are earned with this card can then be transferred to the other Avios programs, giving you access to redemptions such as Iberia Club awards out of Toronto and Qatar Airways QSuites.
How does Iberia price its award flights?
Iberia prices an award on the total distance you fly, on whether your date falls in its peak or off-peak calendar, and on the cabin you book. The cash fare does not enter into it, which is why moving a trip by a few days can change the Avios price substantially. Iberia's Avios calculator shows you the live number before you transfer anything in.
Can I transfer Amex points to Iberia Club?
Not in one step. American Express Canada transfers Membership Rewards points to The British Airways Club at 1,000 points for 1,000 Avios, from a 1,000-point minimum. Iberia Club is not a direct Amex Canada partner, so you move those Avios yourself from British Airways Club to Iberia Club once they land. The second hop is free and usually instant.
Which cabins can I book on Toronto–Madrid?
Economy and business. Iberia flies the route with an Airbus A321XLR carrying 182 seats in two cabins, so there is no premium economy to aim for. Business seats are the scarce ones, and Iberia releases them unevenly across the season, which is why flexible dates matter more than a perfect route.
Can I pay part of an award in cash?
Yes. Iberia’s Avios & Money option covers part of the fare with Avios and the rest in cash, and the booking screen shows you the split before you confirm. It is the fallback worth knowing when your balance lands just short of a full award, and a discount wave applies to it the same way.
