Asia Miles Rebate: Cathay Pacific Gives Back 16%
Share

Cathay Pacific gives back 800 Asia Miles for every 5,000 miles redeemed on an award flight, a rebate of roughly 16%. Registering in advance is mandatory. You then have to book on the Cathay Pacific website by August 27, 2026 at 11:59 a.m. Montreal time. Travel must take place between September 10 and December 10, 2026. Economy and premium economy, Standard Awards only.

In brief

  • Cathay Pacific gives back 800 Asia Miles for every 5,000 miles redeemed on award flights, or roughly 16%.
  • Registration in advance is mandatory, and the booking must be made by August 27, 2026 at 11:59 a.m. Montreal time.
  • Only economy and premium economy cabins qualify. Business and First are excluded.
  • Only Standard Awards count. A Choice or Tailored Award, booked because no Standard Award seat was left, earns no rebate.
  • Your Cathay account must have been opened on or before August 11, 2026.
  • Out of Canada, two routes are involved: Vancouver and Toronto to Hong Kong, non-stop.
  • The rebate is capped at 80,000 miles per member and will be paid by January 31, 2027 at the latest.

You still need the Asia Miles. In Canada, two families of cards feed the program: RBC Avion cards and American Express Membership Rewards cards. The first transfers directly to Asia Miles, which makes it the quickest way to top up before the August 27 deadline.

Cathay Pacific is turning 80 this year, and the Hong Kong carrier keeps lining up promotions. After boosting mile purchases, it is now targeting redemptions: members who book an award flight during the window get part of their Asia Miles back.

The window is short and the conditions are tighter than they look. Here is the concrete effect of the offer for a traveller leaving from Vancouver or Toronto.

View over Hong Kong harbour

How the Asia Miles rebate from Cathay Pacific works

The mechanism is simple: for every 5,000 Asia Miles redeemed on an eligible award flight, Cathay Pacific gives you 800 back. The advertised return rate is therefore 16%.

The rebate is not instant. The miles will be credited back to your account after the end of the travel period, by January 31, 2027 at the latest. You therefore need the full balance at the time of booking, and cannot count on the rebate to fund a second reservation.

One detail can cause confusion. The offer page carries a marketing line mentioning « up to 15% » and an extra bonus of up to 2,000 miles. Neither that percentage nor that bonus appears in the 19 official terms, which refer only to 800 miles per 5,000 redeemed. We stick to the terms, the only text that binds Cathay Pacific.

The 80,000-mile cap per member is not a constraint for most readers: you would have to redeem 500,000 Asia Miles to reach it. That cap only becomes relevant for a family booking in premium economy across several passengers.

Not to be confused with the purchase bonus

Two Cathay Pacific promotions overlap right now and they have nothing to do with each other.

  • The 10% Asia Miles bonus until August 28 applies to buying miles with your credit card. You pay dollars, you receive extra miles.
  • The 800-mile rebate per 5,000 redeemed covered here applies to redeeming miles for a ticket. You spend miles, part of them comes back.

The two offers stack in theory: nothing stops you from buying bonused miles this week, then redeeming them before August 27 to trigger the rebate. Run the numbers first, though, because the purchase price of Asia Miles remains high and the 10% bonus does not always make up for it.

The conditions to meet

Several restrictions sharply narrow the scope of the offer.

Conditions table published by Cathay Pacific: 800 Asia Miles rebated per 5,000 redeemed, booking until August 27, 2026, travel September 10 to December 10, 2026, economy and premium economy
The offer’s conditions table, captured on August 24, 2026. Source: Cathay Pacific Canada.
  • Registration required on Cathay Pacific’s dedicated page before booking. A booking made without prior registration generates no rebate.
  • Booking from August 14 to 27, 2026, meaning until August 27 at 11:59 p.m. Hong Kong time. In Quebec, that is August 27 at 11:59 a.m.
  • Booking on the Cathay Pacific website. Awards issued by phone or through a third party are not covered by the offer.
  • Standard Awards only. Condition 10 is explicit: « only Standard Award is eligible for this offer ». This is the heaviest restriction in the promotion. Once the Standard Award is gone on a given date, the engine offers a Choice Award instead, pricier but still available. That booking earns no rebate.
  • Account opened on or before August 11, 2026. Someone who joins the program today does not qualify, even if they register for the promotion before the deadline.
  • One way or return, open jaw permitted: the outbound and return journeys may depart from or arrive at different cities. Cathay Pacific also allows mixed cabins, for instance economy outbound and premium economy on the way back.
  • Travel between September 10 and December 10, 2026, both days inclusive. Travel must both start and finish within that window: a return scheduled for December 12 disqualifies the whole booking. The holiday period is excluded.
  • Economy and premium economy only. Business and First class awards are not eligible.
  • Flights marketed and operated by Cathay Pacific between Hong Kong and a network destination. Redemptions on partner carriers are excluded.
  • No stopover. An itinerary connecting through Hong Kong does not count. The one-way or return must start or end in Hong Kong.

That last condition is the most limiting for a Quebec reader. Cathay Pacific serves Vancouver and Toronto in Canada, but not Montreal. A traveller leaving from Montreal therefore has to reach one of the two gateways independently, on a separate booking, and absorb the connection risk.

The real cost from Canada

Here is the real cost of the main eligible redemptions. The mileage figures are the « from » prices shown by the Cathay Pacific award search. Captured on August 25, 2026, for one adult, on a Standard Award. We checked all four return fares one by one.

RouteCabinMiles redeemedRebateNet cost

Toronto to Hong Kong (return)Premium economy156,00024,800131,200

The clearest example remains the Vancouver to Hong Kong return in economy. You commit 54,000 Asia Miles, you get 8,000 back, and the flight costs you 46,000 miles. That is 8,000 miles below the published rate, enough to cover a good part of a regional one-way in Asia once you are there.

Note the gap between the two Canadian cities. Toronto is appreciably farther from Hong Kong than Vancouver, and moves into a higher distance band. The one-way costs 11,000 miles more there, before the rebate even enters the picture. Leaving from Vancouver, when that is an option, remains the better trade.

These amounts assume the full balance is in the account on booking day. American Express Membership Rewards points also transfer to Asia Miles, which lets you top up an account just before booking.

The American Express Cobalt® Card is the best credit card from American Express, whether you want points for travel or cash back.

American Express Cobalt® Card welcome offer

The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer we value at $255.

Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.

You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.

You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:

  • 15,000 Aeroplan points
  • 15,000 Avios points
  • 15,000 Flying Blue Miles
  • 18,000 Marriott Bonvoy points

If hotel points are what you are after, our ultimate guide to Marriott Bonvoy and our complete map of Marriott Bonvoy hotels by category show what those points can actually buy.

American Express Cobalt® Card benefits

Here is what the card gives you, starting with the benefits cardholders use most.

  • 5X points on eligible eats and drinks in Canada: groceries, restaurants and bars, home food delivery and convenience stores. A spend cap applies.
  • 3X points on eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada.
  • 2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
  • 1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.
  • 1X point per dollar on everything else, with no category restrictions.
  • Points that hold the same value either way: 1,000 points = $10 as a statement credit, or a 1:1 transfer to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
  • No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
  • Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
  • The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
  • Front Of The Line® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
  • A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.

To see how it compares with the rest of the line-up, read our round-up of the best credit cards from American Express in Canada.

The 5X categories and where they apply

The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers four kinds of merchants:

  • Groceries: Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, Safeway, Whole Foods.
  • Restaurants and bars: sit-down meals, takeout and drinks.
  • Home food delivery.
  • Convenience stores: Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven.

The 2X rate covers gas stations such as Esso, Shell and Petro-Canada, along with public transit and ride sharing.

With the American Express Cobalt® Card, you earn between 1 and 5 points per dollar:

Category Points per dollar
Grocery (Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, etc.) 5
Home food delivery 5
Restaurants and bars 5
Convenience stores 5
Streaming services 3
Service station 2
Transport 2
Travel 1
Other 1

That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.

You can also stack these categories with the hundreds of stores that offer 5x points.

American Express Cobalt® Card insurance coverage

The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.

Travel insurance

  • Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
  • Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
  • Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
  • Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
  • Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
  • Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.

Rental car insurance

Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.

Mobile device insurance

Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.

Purchase protection and extended warranty

Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.

American Express Cobalt® Card fees

  • Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.

The redemptions worth making

Because the rebate is proportional, it does not change the ranking of good and bad redemptions. It simply makes a good redemption slightly better. Three cases stand out.

Economy from Vancouver

At 23,000 miles one way after the rebate, this is the best miles-to-distance ratio in the offer for a transpacific flight of nearly 13 hours. If you accumulate Asia Miles without a specific plan, this is the most defensible redemption of the window.

Premium economy from Vancouver

At 88,000 miles return, Cathay Pacific’s middle cabin becomes debatable. It remains the only way to gain comfort within this promotion. At 52,000 miles one way before the rebate, it costs close to double economy. The gain in comfort is real but measured.

A trip already planned for the fall

If you already had a stay in mind between September 10 and December 10, the offer is a straight gain. It does not on its own justify inventing a trip. Getting 16% back on a redemption you would not have made is still a redemption you would not have made.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Booking before registering. Order matters. Register on the offer page first, book second.
  • Settling for a Choice Award. The costliest trap. When the Standard Award shows sold out on your dates, the Cathay Pacific engine seamlessly offers a Choice Award, markedly more expensive in miles. You pay more and you lose the rebate. Better to shift the dates than to switch award type.
  • Missing the registration date. The registration window closes at the same time as the booking window, on August 27. Registering on the 28th is no use.
  • Counting on Business class. Cathay Pacific’s most sought-after redemption, the Business cabin to Hong Kong, earns no rebate at all, however many miles you commit.
  • Building an itinerary with a connection. Adding a segment beyond Hong Kong disqualifies the entire booking.
  • Cancelling afterwards. A ticket refund claws back the miles paid out. Do not book speculatively just to trigger the bonus.
  • Forgetting taxes and fees. The rebate covers miles only. The cash portion remains payable in full.

Our analysis

This promotion is decent without being exceptional. A 16% return on a redemption is welcome, but Cathay Pacific carefully excluded the cabins the program is known for and set a booking window of only 14 days. Restricting it to Standard Awards narrows the field further. Across the Pacific those seats go months in advance, and a travel window closing on December 10 leaves little room to manoeuvre. The carrier is clearly targeting economy and premium economy seats left empty in the fall.

For a member sitting on a dormant Asia Miles balance and eyeing Asia this fall, registering takes two minutes and costs nothing. For everyone else, the Standard Award requirement will decide it well before the 16% does.

Do I have to register to get the rebate?

Yes. Registration on Cathay Pacific’s dedicated page is mandatory and must come before the booking. An award booked before registering will not be counted.

What is the exact booking deadline?

August 27, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Hong Kong time, which corresponds to August 27 at 11:59 a.m. Montreal time. The 12-hour difference surprises many: August 27 is already over in Hong Kong when it begins in Quebec.

Can I depart and return from different cities?

Yes. Cathay Pacific states that the outbound and return journeys may depart from or arrive at different cities. Any itinerary involving a transit connection, however, remains excluded from the offer.

Is Business class eligible?

No. Only economy and premium economy cabins earn the rebate. Business and First class awards are excluded from the offer.

Does a Choice Award earn the rebate?

No. Condition 10 restricts the offer to Standard Awards. If the Standard Award is sold out on your dates and you book a Choice Award instead, you pay more miles and receive no rebate.

Can I join the program now to take part?

No. The offer covers members whose Cathay account was opened on or before August 11, 2026. Joining later does not become eligible by registering for the promotion.

Can I stop over in Hong Kong?

No. Connecting itineraries are not eligible. The award flight must link Hong Kong directly to Vancouver or Toronto, one way or return.

When are the rebated miles paid?

After the end of the travel period, by January 31, 2027 at the latest. You therefore need to hold all the miles required at the time of booking.

Is this the same as the 10% bonus?

No, these are two separate promotions. The 10% bonus applies to buying miles with cash and ends August 28. The 800-mile rebate per 5,000 applies to redeeming miles for a ticket and requires a booking before August 27.

Is there a cap on the rebate?

Yes, 80,000 miles per member. You would have to redeem 500,000 Asia Miles during the period to reach it, which puts that cap out of reach for a typical individual booking.
