Kenya Airways Status Match: Worth $299 USD?

Kenya Airways Status Match: Worth $299 USD?
Share

The Kenya Airways status match lets you buy SkyTeam Elite Plus status without taking a single flight with the airline. An Aeroplan Elite 50K member pays $299 USD, uploads proof of their current status, and receives the Asante Rewards Gold Elite Plus tier for 12 months. The entry tier, Silver Elite, costs $99 USD.

Our take before we go further: the mechanism is real, and the list of accepted programs is the widest we’ve seen from a SkyTeam carrier. However, for an Aeroplan member, this isn’t the cheapest route to Elite Plus. We run the numbers below.

Applications go through kenya-airways.statusmatch.com, operated by StatusMatch.com. To compare your card options while you’re at it, check our best credit cards page.

How the Asante Rewards match works

Asante Rewards is Kenya Airways’ loyalty program, a member of the SkyTeam alliance. Three tiers are available through a paid status match, and each one maps to a specific SkyTeam level.

Asante Rewards tierSkyTeam levelStarting point required
Silver EliteSkyTeam EliteEntry tier of an eligible airline or hotel program, or an eligible travel credit card
Gold Elite PlusSkyTeam Elite PlusMid-tier of an airline program, or a top tier of a hotel program
Platinum Elite PlusSkyTeam Elite PlusTop tier of an airline program, or ALL Accor Gold, Platinum, or Diamond status

The distinction that matters sits between the entry tier and the other two. Silver gets you SkyTeam Elite, with no lounge access. Gold and Platinum both get you SkyTeam Elite Plus, meaning SkyTeam lounge access and SkyPriority services.

Uniforms of SkyTeam alliance member airlines.

The status stays valid for 12 months after approval. After that, Kenya Airways reviews the tier based on your actual flight activity on its network and its partners’, then applies its usual qualification criteria.

In total, 49 airline programs and 19 hotel programs appear in the official chart, on top of the credit card option. The stated response time is three business days, followed by three more days for the status to show up on your account.

Which tier based on your current status

Here are the matches from the official chart that matter most to Canadian travellers. Each row reads in one direction only: the tier you hold determines the tier you’re granted, with no option to aim higher.

One point stands out because it changes the value of the whole exercise. Of the 19 accepted hotel programs, 18 cap out at Gold Elite Plus. ALL Accor is the only one that unlocks Platinum Elite Plus.

How much it costs from Canada

Fees vary by country of residence and by the route used. Canada shares the same chart as the United States and the rest of the Americas, which is the more expensive of the two published pricing grids.

Route usedSilver EliteGold and Platinum Elite Plus
Airline status$99 USD$299 USD
Hotel status$99 USD$299 USD
Travel credit card$99 USDNot offered

Converted at the Bank of Canada rate for August 11, 2026, which was $1.3927 CAD per US dollar, Silver comes to about $138 CAD. Gold and Platinum both come to about $416 CAD.

Note that the price is identical for Gold and for Platinum. The tier you’re granted therefore depends solely on your starting status, never on the amount paid.

The math to run

An Aeroplan Elite 50K member already has another door to the same SkyTeam level. The Flying Blue status match grants Gold status, meaning SkyTeam Elite Plus, for $299 CAD to Canadian residents.

Route chosenStatus obtainedSkyTeam levelCost for a Canadian
Flying BlueGoldElite Plus$299 CAD
Kenya AirwaysAsante Gold Elite PlusElite Plus$299 USD, about $416 CAD

The result at the gate is the same either way: SkyTeam lounges and SkyPriority across the whole alliance. The roughly $117 CAD gap is therefore a pure loss if your only goal is Elite Plus.

The same logic holds for big travellers. Flying Blue caps Canadian residents at Gold, even with a Super Elite 100K status. Kenya Airways goes up to Platinum Elite Plus, but the level recognized by the alliance stays Elite Plus either way.

Three situations still tip the scale in favour of Kenya Airways:

  • Your status comes from WestJet Rewards: all three tiers, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, appear in Kenya Airways’ official chart
  • Your status is a hotel status: 19 programs are accepted, including Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, and IHG One Rewards
  • You have no airline or hotel status at all: an eligible travel credit card is enough to get Silver Elite for $99 USD

The Aeroplan route, tier by tier

Aeroplan covers all three Asante tiers, which makes it the most complete starting point for a Canadian. An Elite 25K gets Silver Elite, an Elite 50K lands Gold Elite Plus, and an Elite 75K or Super Elite 100K reaches Platinum Elite Plus.

The value jump happens between 35K and 50K. An Elite 35K stays at SkyTeam Elite, so no lounge access, while an Elite 50K moves up to Elite Plus for $200 USD more. If your qualification credit balance puts you close to the threshold, it’s worth crossing it before applying.

A co-branded card helps you reach and then keep this tier. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card remains the go-to choice for building qualification credits through everyday spending.

The WestJet Rewards route

This is where Kenya Airways becomes genuinely useful for a Canadian. WestJet Rewards appears in the official chart with all three of its tiers, from Silver to Platinum, so a Gold member gains access to SkyTeam Elite Plus.

The starting point is unusual. WestJet doesn’t belong to any of the three major alliances, so its elite status normally carries no privileges on a SkyTeam flight. The status match therefore converts a purely domestic status into international perks.

For a WestJet Rewards Gold member planning two transatlantic round trips on Air France, KLM, or Delta within the year, the $416 CAD holds up far better than it does for an Aeroplan member, who still has the $299 CAD Flying Blue option.

The hotel status route

Nineteen hotel programs open the door, which is unusual for an airline status match. A Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, Hilton Honors Gold, World of Hyatt Explorist, or IHG One Rewards Gold Elite member gets Gold Elite Plus, meaning SkyTeam Elite Plus.

This has real value for a Canadian traveller who holds a hotel status earned through nights stayed, but no airline status. Their Bonvoy Gold status, until now useless at the airport, becomes SkyTeam lounge access for $299 USD.

The special case of ALL Accor

ALL Accor holds a place of its own in the chart. Gold, Platinum, and Diamond members jump straight to Platinum Elite Plus, while the other 18 hotel programs cap out at Gold Elite Plus. The Accor Silver tier, meanwhile, only gets Silver Elite.

This opening matters because Accor itself offers no official status match. Two shortcuts still exist to reach Gold: the Accor Group Shareholders Club, which requires 50 bearer shares, and the ALL Gold perk announced on July 22, 2026, by American Express Canada for Platinum cardholders, expected to launch later this year.

The credit card route

No status is needed for this third route. Holding an eligible travel credit card is enough, and the tier granted is limited to Silver Elite, at $99 USD. Gold and Platinum aren’t offered through this door.

The accepted card types are specific: Visa Infinite, Signature, Rewards, and Platinum, Mastercard World and World Elite, as well as American Express Platinum cards and Amex charge cards. One condition applies: the application fee must be paid with the eligible card itself, or the status can be denied or revoked.

Several Canadian cards meet these criteria. Here are the ones that combine an eligible card type with real value for a traveller. Click a card’s name to see its full details.

Keep in mind, though, that paying $99 USD for a SkyTeam Elite status with no lounge access remains the weakest of the three scenarios in terms of value.

Conditions that get an application denied

The terms deserve a careful read, since several clauses rule out profiles that would otherwise assume they qualify. Here are the ones that matter most to Canadian readers.

  • Expired or inactive status: the original status must be active and valid at the time of application, with no exceptions
  • Status not earned through travel: the platform denies applications when it believes the status wasn’t earned under the original program’s own rules, or that it came from another status match
  • Temporary status or status challenge: accounts built on a provisional status or a qualification challenge risk being rejected
  • Name mismatch: the applicant’s name must match the Asante Rewards account, which must be opened beforehand, free of charge
  • Corporate or family accounts: the offer is aimed at individual travellers only
  • Flights already taken: no benefit applies retroactively to flights taken before the status was activated
  • Masked connection: using a VPN or proxy server during the application can lead to a denial

The second clause carries the most weight in Canada. An Aeroplan status built mainly through card spending, via Daily Qualification for a Status, doesn’t rest on flight activity. Nothing suggests these applications are systematically denied, but the risk exists and is worth knowing before you pay.

Who it’s worth it for

The break-even point is fairly simple to calculate. SkyTeam lounge access is worth between $50 and $80 per visit depending on the airport, and Elite Plus lets you bring in a guest. Two round trips as a couple with a layover therefore cover the $416 CAD.

Add the extra baggage allowance and priority baggage handling, which matter a lot on a long-haul flight with a family. Kenya Airways states that 15 SkyTeam carriers already recognize Asante Rewards tiers, including Air France, KLM, Delta, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, and SAS.

  • The WestJet Rewards Gold or Platinum member: it turns a status with no international reach into Elite Plus, with no comparable alternative
  • The holder of a high hotel status: Bonvoy Gold, Hilton Gold, Hyatt Explorist, or IHG Gold Elite, with no airline status to claim
  • The traveller with two SkyTeam long-haul flights planned: lounge access with a guest pays for the fee by the second layover
  • The Aeroplan Elite 50K-and-up member: the Flying Blue status match offers the same SkyTeam level for about $117 CAD less
  • The traveller loyal to Air Canada: with no SkyTeam flight planned in the next 12 months, the fee doesn’t pay for itself
  • The cardholder with no status: $99 USD for a SkyTeam Elite status with no lounge access delivers little real value
  • The Elite 25K or 35K member: the Silver tier caps out at SkyTeam Elite, missing the most sought-after perk

Bottom line

Kenya Airways’ status match genuinely widens the field of options. With 49 airline programs, 19 hotel programs, and a credit card route, it reaches travellers that other offers leave out, especially WestJet Rewards members and hotel status holders.

For an Aeroplan member, my verdict stays the same after checking both charts: the Flying Blue status match delivers the same SkyTeam Elite Plus for $299 CAD. Save the $416 CAD Kenya Airways route for cases where no other door is open.

One last precaution before you pay: the offer has no published end date, but Kenya Airways and StatusMatch.com reserve the right to end or change it at any time. Check the official chart on the day you apply.

Kenya Airways Status Match – Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fly Kenya Airways to get the status?

No. No Kenya Airways flight is required for the application. You need an active status in an eligible program or an eligible credit card, a free Asante Rewards account, and to pay the processing fee. The status is reviewed based on your flight activity after 12 months, though.

Is Aeroplan status accepted?

Yes. Aeroplan appears in the official chart with its five tiers. An Elite 25K or 35K gets Silver Elite, an Elite 50K gets Gold Elite Plus, and an Elite 75K or Super Elite 100K gets Platinum Elite Plus.

Is WestJet Rewards status accepted?

Yes, with its three tiers. A Silver member gets Silver Elite, a Gold member gets Gold Elite Plus, and a Platinum member gets Platinum Elite Plus. Since WestJet belongs to no alliance, this route turns a domestic status into benefits across the whole SkyTeam network.

Which tier gives access to SkyTeam lounges?

Gold Elite Plus and Platinum Elite Plus, both of which match SkyTeam Elite Plus. The Silver Elite tier matches SkyTeam Elite and doesn’t include lounge access. Both Elite Plus tiers cost the same: $299 USD from Canada.

How long does the status stay valid?

Twelve months from approval. Kenya Airways then reviews the tier based on your activity on its network and its partners’. The program states that maintenance thresholds are lower than the ones required to earn the status the first time.

Can you apply for a tier higher than your own?

No. The tier granted matches the status held at the time of application, with no upgrade possible. Only one match is allowed per person, and a member already approved can’t apply for another one with Kenya Airways, even after a promotion in their original program.

Are the fees refundable?

Fees are refunded when the application isn’t approved, and the refund then shows up on the statement of the card used. One caution though: disputing the charge triggers immediate suspension of the granted status, with no warning.

Is it better to go through Flying Blue?

For an Aeroplan Elite 50K-and-up member, yes. The Flying Blue status match grants Gold status, the same SkyTeam Elite Plus, for $299 CAD to Canadian residents, versus about $416 CAD with Kenya Airways. The math flips for a WestJet or hotel status.

Which SkyTeam carriers recognize the status?

Kenya Airways names 15 carriers that already recognize Asante Rewards tiers, including Air France, KLM, Delta, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, China Airlines, China Eastern, SAS, Vietnam Airlines, Saudia, Air Europa, TAROM, Middle East Airlines, and Xiamen Air.
