Your Guide to WestJet’s Baggage Dimensions

With all the planning that goes into a trip away from home, you really want everything to go as smoothly as possible from the minute you step out your front door.
You want the traffic to be quick, the airport lines to be short, and the flight to be on time. Additionally, you also want to make sure to avoid frustrations like having to pay extra fees for your luggage because it’s too big, too heavy, or not included in your fare.
With this in mind, let’s go over WestJet’s baggage rules and dimension to make sure you’re all set for a trouble-free trip.
WestJet Baggage Rules
Each time you book a flight with WestJet, you’re required to select a fare type, and this fare type will determine how much and what type of baggage is included with your ticket.
If you bring more bags than you’re allowed, or your bags exceed the size and weight limits set by WestJet, you’re likely going to have to pay extra fees at the airport.
This means that prior to setting out for the airport, it’s important to check WestJet’s baggage dimension rules and restrictions to make sure you don’t get hit with any surprise fees.
WestJet Baggage Dimensions
Carry-on baggage
When you book a flight with WestJet, you’re allowed to bring one carry-on item and one personal item (except with UltraBasic fares, which we’ll go over below).
These two pieces of luggage need to fit within WestJet’s listed baggage dimensions to make sure that they can be properly stowed during your flight.
If your bags don’t meet the dimension requirements, you may need to check them when you arrive at the airport, and this will likely incur a notable fee.
To help make sure your bags fall within WestJet’s guidelines, let’s take a look at the acceptable dimensions for carry-on luggage and personal items.
WestJet’s carry-on baggage dimensions are:
- Height: 56 cm (22 in.)
- Depth: 23 cm (9 in.)
- Width: 36 cm (14 in.)
WestJet’s personal item dimensions rules are:
- Height: 41 cm (16 in.)
- Depth: 14 cm (6 in.)
- Width: 33 cm (13 in.)
Keep in mind that these measurements include the bags handle, wheels, and any other part that’s attached. Your bags will need to fit in WestJet’s sizing device, and if they don’t fit, you will likely need to pay a fee to have it checked.
Additionally, take note that there’s no specific weight restrictions for these items, but they must be light enough that you can store them in the overhead compartments without assistance.
Checked baggage
When packing for your next WestJet flight, make sure your checked bags do not exceed the following measurements:
- 23 kg (50 lbs)
- Total linear dimension of 157 cm (62 inches)
For overweight and oversized luggage, you may incur fees of up to $118 (with the cost charged in either CAD or USD depending on the booking’s country of origin).
Additionally, your oversized items cannot be bigger or heavier than the following:
- 203 cm in combined dimensions
- 45 kg (100 lbs) on WestJet or WestJet Encore flights
- 32 kg (70 lbs) on WestJet flights to/from Europe
UltraBasic Fares baggage rules
If you book WestJet’s UltraBasic fare, you’ll want to be aware for the following baggage rules:
- Your fare only entitles you to bring a personal item (no carry-on) for flights in North America and Central America, unless you booked WestJet’s Extended Comfort.
- Extended Comfort allows you to bring a carry-on bag in addition to your personal item.
- One carry-on bag is included with UltraBasic fares for flights to/from Europe and Asia.
- Checked bags can be added for a fee.
How to Get Free or Discounted Checked Baggage with WestJet
There are a few ways to save on the cost of checked baggage when you fly with WestJet:
Choose the right fare
Probably the most common way to get free checked bags on your WestJet flight is to choose a fare type that already includes baggage.
With WestJet, you get your first checked bag free with the following fare types:
- EconoFlex
- Premium/PremiumFlex
- Business/BusinessFlex
Additionally, if you choose one of the latter two fares, you also get a second checked bag for free. Plus, WestJet’s business class fares also tend to get extra perks like priority check-in, early boarding, and airport lounge access.
WestJet Rewards status tiers
WestJet Rewards members who have qualified for the Silver, Gold, or Platinum status tiers get their first two checked bag for free regardless of which fare they book.
Additionally, WestJet Rewards Platinum members also get a third checked bag for free.
Credit cards
One of the easiest ways to enjoy free checked baggage on your next trip is by holding either the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡ and/or WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard for Business‡.
With either of these cards, you get your first checked bag for free, plus you can extend this perk to up to 8 other travellers if they’re on the same booking as you.
If you only fly with WestJet occasionally, you can use the National Bank World Elite Mastercard® to pay your baggage fees and use the annual $150 travel credit to cover the fees.
