Your holiday shopping can fund part of your next trip. With the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡, the groceries for your holiday dinners, the gas for December's errands, and the gifts under the tree all earn WestJet points. Here is how those purchases add up, and what they are worth on a real flight to one of the most booked winter destinations: Punta Cana.
What Your December Spending Earns
With this card, you earn points at three different rates depending on the purchase, all year long, including during the busiest stretch of the calendar.
- 2 WestJet points per dollar at grocery stores³, including holiday dinners and family gatherings
- 2 WestJet points per dollar on gas, EV charging, public transit and rideshare³, for every December errand
- 1.5 WestJet points per dollar on gifts and all other everyday purchases²
- 2 WestJet points per dollar on WestJet flights and WestJet Vacations or Sunwing Vacations packages², if you book your own trip with the card

If you charge $1,500 to the card in groceries and gas during December, plus $1,000 in gifts and everyday purchases, you already earn 4,500 WestJet points in that one month alone, before counting the rest of the year.
What a Full Year Adds Up To
The December math is just a preview. Over a full year, if you spend $6,000 on groceries and transportation, plus $12,000 in everyday purchases, you earn 12,000 points at the 2-points-per-dollar rate³ and 18,000 points at the 1.5-points-per-dollar rate², for 30,000 WestJet points from your everyday spending alone. Combined with the welcome bonus of up to 70,000 points¹, you get 100,000 WestJet points in year one.
The welcome bonus offer of up to 70,000 points¹ runs until November 18, 2026. Applying before then means a new cardholder can combine it with the exact same December spending used in the example above.
A Real Example: Toronto to Punta Cana for the Holidays
Punta Cana remains one of the most booked destinations for Canadians in December. If you are flying out of Toronto for the Christmas week, here is a real round trip.
On December 20, 2026, a direct Toronto (YYZ) to Punta Cana (PUJ) flight takes 4h35 non-stop, on a Boeing 737 MAX 8. The return, on December 27, 2026, takes 4h50, also non-stop. The Econo fare, the one that earns you WestJet points and includes a carry-on bag, runs $892.08 outbound and $498.29 return, for $1,390.37 per person, taxes and fees included.
For a couple, the full trip costs you about $2,780.74 CAD. That is a peak-season price, higher than outside the holidays, which makes it that much more worthwhile to start earning your points from November and December shopping rather than waiting.
| Segment | Fare per person (taxes and fees included) |
|---|---|
| Outbound, December 20, 2026 (YYZ → PUJ, non-stop, 4h35) | $892.08 |
| Return, December 27, 2026 (PUJ → YYZ, non-stop, 4h50) | $498.29 |
| Total per person | $1,390.37 |
| Total for 2 adults | $2,780.74 |
The Perks That Matter Most While Travelling
Beyond earning points, the card gives you benefits that directly reduce the cost of your family or couple's trip.
- Free first checked bag for the primary cardholder and up to eight guests on the same reservation4, a direct benefit for a family travelling together
- Annual companion voucher from $119 CAD (plus taxes, fees, surcharges and other ATC), once you charge $5,000 in purchases to the card each year5, also exchangeable for a 30% flight discount for one traveller8 or a $200 credit toward a WestJet Vacations or Sunwing Vacations package9
- Status Lift toward the next WestJet Rewards tier, up to 50 times per year¹¹
- Comprehensive travel insurance, including trip cancellation and interruption coverage¹6, useful for a departure during one of the busiest travel periods
Who This Card Actually Fits
The WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡ targets a specific profile: to qualify, RBC requires that you have a personal income of at least $80,000, or a household income of at least $150,000. The card has an annual fee of $139 and a purchase interest rate of 20.99%.
It fits you particularly well if you already plan a WestJet trip during the year, as a family or couple, and your December spending on groceries, gas and gifts is substantial. The free first checked bag for the primary cardholder and up to eight guests4 helps larger families travelling together directly, and the annual companion voucher5 pays for itself the first time you use it.
This math holds whether the destination is a sun getaway like Punta Cana or a snowy visit to family closer to home, since every category of December spending earns points the same way regardless of where the trip leads.
