Mr and Mrs Smith Hotels: Hyatt Points, Smith Extra and 18 Properties in Canada
Loading article…
Mr and Mrs Smith is a free travel club that opens the door to luxury boutique hotels, including 18 in Canada, with a gift on arrival and up to 3% in loyalty credit. Since 2024, more than 700 of these hotels can also be booked on hyatt.com, where your stays earn World of Hyatt points.
Since these hotels often bill in a foreign currency, pay with a card that has no foreign transaction fees, like the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card: you avoid 2.5% in fees on every night.
Our take: for a couples' trip or a special occasion, the selection is well worth a look, as long as you pick the right booking site. Further down, we show you with numbers when Hyatt points pay more than the Smith Extra.

What is Mr and Mrs Smith?
Mr and Mrs Smith is a free travel club that sells nights at luxury boutique hotels and villas. The company was founded in 2003, when James and Tamara Lohan decided to build their own hotel selection after a disappointing holiday. Hyatt bought it in 2023, but the platform kept its own website, team of travel advisors and membership program.
Every stay booked with Mr and Mrs Smith comes with a Smith Extra on arrival: a bottle of champagne, a spa treatment, museum tickets or a picnic, depending on the hotel. You also earn loyalty credit to use on a future stay, based on your membership tier:
- BlackSmith (free): 1% loyalty credit on every booking, the Smith Extra and member-only offers
- SilverSmith: 2% loyalty credit, priority on exclusive offers and discounted access to more than 600 airport lounges
- GoldSmith: 3% loyalty credit, a dedicated travel concierge and upgrades subject to availability
Where Are the Hotels Located?
You will find Mr and Mrs Smith hotels all over the world, each one hand-picked and visited anonymously by the platform's team before it joins the collection. Hotels pay to be listed, but Mr and Mrs Smith states that a property cannot buy its place.
From France to the Caribbean, Australia, to the Middle East, the collection covers every region. Here are 3 properties we recommend:
- Cannúa, an eco-lodge perched in the mountains of northwestern Colombia, also bookable with World of Hyatt points
- Lily of the Valley, in La Croix-Valmer, 20 minutes from Saint-Tropez, designed by Philippe Starck
- Grand Forest Metsovo, deep in the forest of Greece's Pindus Mountains, with an infinity pool facing the peaks
Europe holds a large share of the collection, and France has a strong presence: you will find properties from Paris to Cannes, by way of the Languedoc and the Luberon.
In Canada, the platform lists 18 hotels, mostly in Ontario, British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador. Here are 8 properties you can book from coast to coast:
- Hotel St Paul, in Old Montreal
- The Drake Hotel and The Broadview Hotel, in Toronto
- Drake Devonshire and Merrill House, in Prince Edward County, Ontario
- Rosewood Hotel Georgia, in downtown Vancouver
- Wickaninnish Inn, on the west coast of Vancouver Island
- Fogo Island Inn, on Fogo Island, in Newfoundland and Labrador
Best Price Guarantee
If you find a lower price elsewhere, Mr and Mrs Smith matches it and gives you £50 in loyalty credit (or the equivalent in your currency), valid for 2 years on a future stay, under its best price guarantee. These 4- and 5-star hotels are still expensive, but you won't pay more than on another public site. The conditions:
- Public rate: it must be bookable online right away, for the same hotel, dates, room and cancellation terms
- Minimum gap: at least 3% and at least £10 lower than the Mr and Mrs Smith price
- Timing: your claim must arrive within 24 hours of booking, and more than 24 hours before arrival
- Excluded rates: member-only rates, promo codes, packages, and prices shown on hyatt.com
World of Hyatt Points at Mr and Mrs Smith
Since April 24, 2024, you can earn and redeem World of Hyatt points at more than 700 Mr and Mrs Smith hotels, according to Hyatt's announcement. One condition: book on hyatt.com or in the World of Hyatt app, and add your member number when you book.
- Earning: 5 base points per US dollar spent on the room, plus your elite bonus (10% Discoverist, 20% Explorist, 30% Globalist). Meals, spa and incidentals earn nothing.
- Status: every night counts toward your World of Hyatt status and Milestone Rewards.
- Redeeming: free nights follow a dynamic price shown at booking, with no category chart, and resort fees are included in the points price.
- Exclusions: no Points + Cash, no free night certificates and no elite benefits at the hotel. Globalist members may still receive an upgrade on arrival, subject to availability.
Let's take 3 nights at US$500 in a participating hotel, or US$1,500 for the room. Here is what you get depending on where you book:
- On hyatt.com: 7,500 World of Hyatt base points, worth about $135 at our value of 1.8¢ per point
- With Mr and Mrs Smith, BlackSmith tier: US$15 in loyalty credit, plus the Smith Extra on arrival
- Our take: the Hyatt points come out ahead, unless the hotel's Smith Extra (a spa treatment, a bottle of champagne) is worth more than $100 to you
Which Card Should You Use to Pay?
You will often pay for these hotels in US dollars, euros or pounds. Most cards then add a 2.5% foreign conversion fee to every night; the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card charges none. If you would rather earn flexible points to fund your travel, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card offers a bigger welcome bonus. Here is the net gain in year one:
- Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card: 25,000 Scene+ points after $2,000 in purchases in 3 months (account opened by November 1, 2026), worth $250, minus the $150 annual fee = $100 net in year one, plus $37.50 in foreign exchange fees saved on $1,500 of hotel nights
- RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card: 55,000 Avion points in year one (35,000 on approval and 20,000 after $5,000 in purchases in 6 months, apply before November 25, 2026), worth about $935 at our value of 1.7¢ per point, minus the $120 annual fee = about $815 net in year one
If you are 65 or older, the travel medical insurance on both cards only covers the first 3 days of each trip, compared with 25 days before age 65 on the Scotia card and 15 days on the RBC card. For a longer stay, plan for separate coverage: our guide to travel insurance for travellers 65 and over compares your options.
Our Take on Mr and Mrs Smith
For a couples' trip or a special occasion, Mr and Mrs Smith is one of the best-curated boutique hotel catalogues out there, alongside Virtuoso, Teritoria and Small Luxury Hotels of the World, which is now a Hilton Honors partner. Its strengths are the selection and the Smith Extra; its limit is high rates that you will often pay in a foreign currency.
Before each booking, we recommend comparing both channels: the Smith Extra and loyalty credit with Mr and Mrs Smith, or points and elite nights on hyatt.com. In our example of 3 nights at US$500, the Hyatt points are worth over $100 more than the loyalty credit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mr and Mrs Smith membership free?
Yes. You become a BlackSmith member for free by creating an account or making a first booking. That level gives you 1% loyalty credit on every booking and the Smith Extra on arrival.
Who owns Mr and Mrs Smith?
Hyatt bought Mr and Mrs Smith in 2023. The platform keeps its own website and membership program, but part of its hotel collection can also be booked on hyatt.com.
Can you use World of Hyatt points at Mr and Mrs Smith hotels?
Yes, at participating hotels, which number more than 700, and only when you book on hyatt.com or in the World of Hyatt app. The number of points changes with dates and room type: there is no fixed award chart for these hotels.
How many Hyatt points does a Mr and Mrs Smith stay earn?
You earn 5 base points per US dollar spent on the room rate, plus your World of Hyatt elite bonus. Dining, spa and other on-site charges earn nothing.
Can you get the Smith Extra and Hyatt points on the same stay?
No. The Smith Extra and loyalty credit are reserved for stays booked with Mr and Mrs Smith, while Hyatt points require a booking made on hyatt.com. You pick one or the other for each stay.
How many Mr and Mrs Smith hotels are there in Canada?
The platform lists 18 properties in Canada, from the Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver and The Drake Hotel in Toronto to the Hotel St Paul in Montreal and the Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland.
Are Mr and Mrs Smith hotels sold on Booking.com?
Many are, but a booking made on Booking.com or another travel site gives you neither the Smith Extra, nor loyalty credit, nor World of Hyatt points.
Which credit card should you use to pay for a Mr and Mrs Smith hotel?
Since the bill is often in a foreign currency, a card with no foreign transaction fees like the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card saves you 2.5% in fees. If you prefer flexible points, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card is a strong choice to fund your trips.
