Marriott Bonvoy® Points Value in Canada

One Marriott Bonvoy® point is worth 0.9 cents according to the Milesopedia valuation. That Marriott Bonvoy points value reflects the most rewarding use of the program, namely booking hotel nights. In practical terms, 10,000 points represent about $90, and 100,000 points about $900.
This figure comes from our rewards points valuation page for Canada, which we revise twice a year. In the sections below, you will see how we reach that number, how many points a night really costs, which redemptions pay the most and which ones destroy value. To compare every way of earning these points, also check our best credit cards page.
Our valuation method
Milesopedia assigns a value in cents to every loyalty program. The base rule stays the same everywhere: we keep the use the program was built for.
Now, Marriott Bonvoy® exists to book rooms. Consequently, the retained value compares the points price of an award night with the cash rate for the same room. We then measure every other redemption against that benchmark. Finally, we revise the grid twice a year, because a program’s value moves like a currency.
| Redemption | Value per point |
|---|---|
| Hotel nights | 0.9 cents |
| Transfers to airline partners | 0.8 cents |
| Flights booked through Marriott | 0.4 cents |
| Merchandise | 0.35 cents |
| Gift cards | 0.35 cents |
| Car rentals | 0.1 cents |
| Retained value | 0.9 cents |
This value also prices credit card welcome bonuses. As a result, an offer advertised in points becomes a dollar figure you can compare from one card to another.
How many points for a night?
There is no fixed chart anymore. Since March 29, 2022, Marriott applies dynamic pricing: the points price of a night follows real-time demand, the season and the property you pick.
Marriott still uses property categories internally, crossed with three seasons. Before the switch, the official chart ranged from 5,000 points (category 1, off-peak) to 100,000 points (category 8, peak). Those amounts now serve as planning benchmarks. During high-demand periods, a night can clearly exceed the historical ceiling.
| Category | Off-Peak | Standard | Peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5,000 | 7,500 | 10,000 |
| 2 | 10,000 | 12,500 | 15,000 |
| 3 | 15,000 | 17,500 | 20,000 |
| 4 | 20,000 | 25,000 | 30,000 |
| 5 | 30,000 | 35,000 | 40,000 |
| 6 | 40,000 | 50,000 | 60,000 |
| 7 | 50,000 | 60,000 | 70,000 |
| 8 | 70,000 | 85,000 | 100,000 |
To learn the real price, run a search on marriottbonvoy.com with your dates, then tick the points payment option. The site then shows the points rate and the cash rate side by side. Our guide on how to book free nights with Marriott Bonvoy® points walks through every step.
The best uses of your points
Hotel nights dominate by a wide margin. However, a few levers push the return well above 0.9 cents per point.
- Hotel nights: 0.9 cents per point under our valuation. This is the reference use of the program, and the only one that reaches the retained value.
- Five-night stays: Marriott gives you the cheapest night of the stay when you pay five consecutive nights entirely with points. The saving approaches 20% on the booking.
- PointSavers promotions: selected hotels display a points discount during predefined weeks, with savings reaching up to 33%.
- Upscale properties off-peak: a luxury property in low season often costs fewer points than a mid-range hotel at the height of the season.
- Airline transfers with the bonus: 0.8 cents per point under our grid, once the 5,000-mile bonus is factored in.
Our team regularly publishes its best points redemptions for free nights. These examples show returns far above average, especially in beach destinations.
The worst uses of your points
Conversely, four redemptions destroy the value of your points. Our grid prices them without ambiguity.
- Car rentals: 0.1 cents per point, nine times less than a hotel night. This is the weakest redemption in the program.
- Merchandise: 0.35 cents per point. You pay the Marriott catalogue well above the going retail price.
- Gift cards: 0.35 cents per point. The conversion gives away close to two thirds of your balance.
- Flights booked through Marriott: 0.4 cents per point. Transferring to an airline partner pays twice as much.
The rule fits in one sentence: if the redemption on offer falls below 0.9 cents per point, pay cash and keep your points for a hotel night.
What 110,000 points are worth
110,000 points are worth roughly $990 at 0.9 cents per point. That total matches the maximum welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card, as of August 2026.
In actual nights, the outcome depends mostly on the property price. The table below applies the historical chart and the fifth night free. It assumes blocks of five consecutive nights paid entirely with points at the same hotel.
| Price per night | Nights, separate bookings | Nights, blocks of 5 |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 points | 22 | 27 |
| 12,500 points | 8 | 10 |
| 30,000 points | 3 | 3 |
| 50,000 points | 2 | 2 |
| 85,000 points | 1 | 1 |
A ten-night stay at a hotel priced at 12,500 points therefore remains within reach on a single welcome bonus. At the other end, 110,000 points pay for one night at a palace in peak season. Our guide to the fifth night free explains every condition you must meet.
Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card
The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for earning free hotel nights.
Welcome offer: up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
New cardholders can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:
- Earn 80,000 points after you charge a total of $6,000 to your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
- Plus, earn 30,000 points when you make a purchase in your 15th month of Cardmembership.
This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no fee for additional Cards, so you can add your partner or a family member at no extra cost.
The annual free night certificate
Every year after your first Cardmembership anniversary, you receive an annual free night certificate redeemable for a stay worth up to 35,000 points at participating hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9¢ per Marriott Bonvoy point, this certificate is worth about $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. It is the main reason to keep this Card year after year rather than cancel it.
To get the most out of it, aim for a night priced close to the 35,000-point cap.
15 Elite Night Credits every year
The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits per calendar year and Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status automatically. These nights count toward the next Elite tier, so you start each year 15 nights ahead.
You automatically reach Gold Elite status when you spend $30,000 on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 eligible paid nights in the same calendar year with your Card’s 15 Elite Night Credits.
How much are Marriott Bonvoy points worth?
Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9¢ each. On that basis, the 110,000-point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an annual certificate used at its 35,000-point cap is worth about $315.
Marriott Bonvoy points deliver their full value on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, so this Card should be judged on the stays it helps you get.
How you earn points
You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy properties and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights, with no blackout dates, at more than 7,000 hotels worldwide.
Insurance, fees and eligibility
The Card comes with a solid set of protections: $500,000 travel accident insurance; flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage, and hotel/motel burglary coverage of $500 each; car rental theft and damage coverage up to $85,000 for rentals of 48 days or less; 90-day Purchase Protection; and a one-year Extended Warranty.
Two things to keep in mind: the 2.5% foreign exchange fee on purchases made in foreign currencies, and the 21.99% interest rate on purchases, which make this a Card to pay in full every month. As with all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is required, and you can check whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.
Transferring points to Aeroplan
Marriott Bonvoy® partners with close to 40 airline programs. The standard ratio is 3 Bonvoy points for 1 mile, and Aeroplan uses that same ratio.
For every 60,000 points transferred, Marriott adds a 5,000-mile bonus. Therefore, 60,000 Bonvoy points give you 20,000 Aeroplan points, plus 5,000 bonus points, for 25,000 Aeroplan points in total.
Run the math before you click. 60,000 Bonvoy points are worth $540 at 0.9 cents. The 25,000 Aeroplan points you receive are worth $500 at 2 cents, the Milesopedia value of an Aeroplan point. The transfer therefore costs you a little value on average, which explains the 0.8 cents in our grid.
Two exceptions deserve your attention. First, United Airlines pays a 10,000-mile bonus per 60,000 points transferred. Second, the 5,000-mile bonus does not apply to American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles or Delta SkyMiles.
Bottom line
Keep 0.9 cents per point in mind. This benchmark turns any Bonvoy balance into dollars and makes every decision easy to settle.
Book nights, group them in fives whenever the trip allows it, and skip merchandise and car rentals. To earn faster, compare the best Marriott Bonvoy® credit cards. Finally, to get our analysis every week, sign up for our newsletter.

Marriott Bonvoy points – Frequently asked questions
Here are the questions Canadian travellers ask most often about the value of Marriott Bonvoy® points.
How much is a Marriott Bonvoy® point worth?
A Marriott Bonvoy® point is worth 0.9 cents under the Milesopedia valuation. That value rests on the main use of the program, which is booking hotel nights. Other redemptions pay less: 0.8 cents for an airline transfer, 0.4 cents for a flight bought through Marriott, and only 0.1 cents for a car rental. We revise this grid twice a year.
How many Bonvoy points for a free night?
The price depends on the hotel, the date and demand, because Marriott has used dynamic pricing since March 2022. Before that change, the official chart ran from 5,000 points per night to 100,000 points per night. Those bounds remain a solid planning benchmark, although prices can exceed them in peak season. Read our guide on how to book free nights before you set your points budget.
How much are 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points worth?
100,000 points are worth roughly $900 at 0.9 cents per point. In practice, that balance covers about twenty nights at a budget hotel, around ten nights at a mid-range property, or a single night at a luxury address in peak season. The fifth night free improves that return further on longer stays.
Does Marriott Bonvoy® still use categories?
Marriott stopped publishing a fixed category chart on March 29, 2022. The group still keeps property categories internally, crossed with three seasons and real-time demand. In other words, two nights at the same hotel can cost very different amounts depending on the dates you choose.
How do I get the fifth night free?
Book five consecutive nights at the same hotel and pay the whole stay with points. Marriott then gives you the cheapest of the five nights, which represents close to 20% in savings. Free night awards and cash nights do not count toward the calculation. Our guide to the fifth night free lists every condition.
What is the transfer ratio to Aeroplan?
The ratio is 3 Marriott Bonvoy® points for 1 Aeroplan point. On top of that, Marriott adds a 5,000-point bonus per 60,000 points transferred. A 60,000-point transfer therefore yields 25,000 Aeroplan points. At 2 cents per Aeroplan point, that equals $500, against $540 if you kept your points for a hotel night.
Which redemptions should I avoid?
Avoid car rentals (0.1 cents per point), merchandise and gift cards (0.35 cents per point) as well as flights bought directly from Marriott (0.4 cents per point). In all four cases, you collect less than half the value of a hotel night. Pay cash instead and keep your points for a stay.
How do I convert Membership Rewards points to Bonvoy?
American Express transfers Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy® at a ratio of 1,000 for 1,200, which is 5 points for 6. So 50,000 Membership Rewards points become 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points. Wait for a transfer bonus promotion whenever you can, since it lifts that return. Membership Rewards cards therefore give you a second earning path.
