Starbucks Rewards: New 3-Tier Program

Three Member Tiers with Progressive Benefits

The major redesign of the program revolves around three member levels: Green, Gold, and Reserve, each unlocking exclusive benefits based on annual activity. This tiered structure aims to reward increasing loyalty while encouraging greater engagement.

Green Member: The Accessible Starting Point

All members start at the Green level and earn 1 star per dollar spent. This basic tier already offers significant benefits:

• Free Mod Mondays: A free beverage customization on a selected Monday each month (extra espresso shot, syrup, or cold foam)
• Birthday Reward: A free drink or food item on your birthday
• Personalized offers and early access to select beverages and food items
• Access to exclusive games like Starbucks for Life
• Bonus Stars on reloads: 10 stars for a digital reload of $30 or more, 25 stars for $50 or more

Stars remain valid for six months, and members can extend their validity by an additional month by completing a qualifying monthly activity (purchase, reward redemption, or digital card reload).

Gold Member: The 500-Star Threshold

By accumulating 500 stars over 12 months, members achieve Gold status, which substantially increases the earning rate to 1.5 stars per dollar spent (i.e., 15 stars for every $10 spent).
Exclusive Gold tier benefits include:

• All Green level benefits
• Non-expiring stars – a major benefit requested by members
• 7 days to redeem the free birthday reward
• At least 4 exclusive Double Star Days per year, allowing members to double their stars on all purchases during these designated days

Reserve Member: The 2,500-Star Elite

Reserve status, accessible after accumulating 2,500 stars in 12 months, represents the pinnacle of the program with an earning rate of 1.7 stars per dollar spent. This premium tier offers unparalleled exclusive experiences:

• All Green and Gold level benefits
• 30 days to redeem the birthday reward
• At least 6 additional Double Star Days annually
• All-expenses-paid trips to prestigious destinations like Tokyo, Milan, or Costa Rica to explore and celebrate global coffee culture
• Access to exclusive opportunities reserved for the most loyal members

Each level remains valid for 12 months. To maintain Gold status, 500 stars must be accumulated during the following year, and 2,500 stars to retain Reserve status. Members can easily track their progress via the Starbucks app or their online account.

New 60-Star Redemption Tier

Responding to members’ demand for faster access to rewards, Starbucks is introducing a new strategic redemption option that allows members to earn a reward in as few as four visits.

The Six Redemption Tiers

• 25 stars: Free beverage customization (extra espresso shot, syrup, or added cold foam) – value up to $1
• 60 stars (NEW): $2 off any eligible purchase
• 100 stars: Hot or iced brewed coffee or tea, bakery item, packaged snacks, and more – value up to $6
• 200 stars: Handcrafted beverage like a latte or cold brew, or hot breakfast item like Sous Vide Egg Bites or the Double-Smoked Bacon, Cheddar Egg Sandwich – value up to $10
• 300 stars: Choice of a packaged salad, lunch sandwich, or packaged whole bean coffee
• 400 stars: Select Starbucks merchandise items – value up to $20

Linking with Other Loyalty Programs

An often overlooked, yet advantageous aspect of the program allows members to link their Starbucks Rewards account with certain partner programs to multiply benefits. Canadian members can notably connect their account with:

• Certain TD credit and debit cards such as the TD Rewards Visa* Card and the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite* Card
• The Aeroplan program, offering additional opportunities to maximize daily purchases

This integration allows for the simultaneous accumulation of Starbucks stars and points or benefits in partner programs.

Milesopedia Tips

The transformation of the Starbucks Rewards program represents a major strategic evolution that warrants a thoughtful approach to maximize its benefits.

Prioritize Gold status quickly: With only 500 stars required (approximately $330 in spending), the jump from 1 to 1.5 stars per dollar represents a 50% increase in return. For a consumer spending $30 monthly at Starbucks, Gold status becomes accessible in 11 months.

Leverage strategic reloads: The 10-star ($30 reload) and 25-star ($50) bonuses add an additional return of 33% and 50% respectively on these amounts. Combine this with a credit card offering points on gift card purchases for a multiplier effect.

The new 60-star tier is a game-changer: This option offers an excellent ratio for frequent small redemptions. In four visits at $15 with Gold status (4 × $15 × 1.5 = 90 stars), you already get $2 off, representing a 3.3% return.

Eliminating expiration is crucial: For Gold and Reserve members, non-expiring stars mean it becomes strategically viable to accumulate for the 300 or 400-star tiers, offering better absolute value, without risking the loss of stars.

Aim for Reserve for travel: Beyond the 1.7 stars per dollar rate, all-expenses-paid trips to iconic coffee destinations represent exceptional value that few Canadian loyalty programs can match.

Upon launch on March 10, 2026, existing members will have their tier automatically assigned based on their Starbucks Rewards engagement during 2025. All current star balances will be preserved and transferred to the new system.

This seamless transition ensures that no member loses their accumulated stars, while immediately benefiting from the new redemption options and applicable tier advantages.

Bottom Line

The new Starbucks Rewards program marks a strategic turning point for the coffee giant, directly addressing members’ concerns regarding star expiration while introducing progressive incentives to boost loyalty. The addition of the 60-star redemption tier democratizes access to rewards, while Gold and Reserve statuses offer substantial premium benefits justifying increased engagement.

For the 38 million North American members, this redesigned program represents a concrete opportunity to optimize their daily coffee spending. By strategically combining bonus reloads, accumulation towards higher statuses, and integration with partner programs like Aeroplan, savvy consumers can transform their morning coffee ritual into a source of savings and premium experiences.

The March 10 launch is approaching: it’s the ideal time to analyze your Starbucks consumption habits and plan your accumulation strategy to maximize the benefits of the new program.

When does the new Starbucks Rewards program come into effect?

The new three-tier program will launch on March 10, 2026, for all members in Canada and North America.

What happens to my current stars during the transition?

All your existing stars will be automatically transferred to the new system. No stars will be lost during the March 10 migration.

How is my initial member tier determined?

Your starting tier (Green, Gold, or Reserve) will be based on your Starbucks Rewards activity during 2025. If you accumulated 500 stars in 2025, you will start at the Gold level; 2,500 stars will grant you Reserve status.

How long do my stars remain valid?

It depends on your tier: Green members must complete a qualifying monthly activity to extend the validity of their stars (6-month base), while Gold and Reserve members benefit from stars that never expire.

Can I combine Starbucks Rewards with other programs?

Yes! You can link your Starbucks Rewards account with certain TD credit and debit cards, as well as with the Aeroplan program to simultaneously accumulate stars and points.
