Hotels' Best Rate Guarantee policy

Each hotel chain has its own best rate guarantee policy. Thus, it wants to encourage you to book on their site directly. The goal is to avoid paying a commission to a travel site, such as Expedia, Booking.com or Hotels.com, for the same reservation.

For example, you’ve booked on Best Western‘s website, but you see the same room at the same hotel for less on Expedia. You send a claim form to Best Western.

They’ll analyze your request and, if approved, you’ll receive a US$100 gift card.

To sum up, here are the policies of the various hotel groups:

There are several conditions to be met. Please check them carefully or your application will be denied.

The Best Rate Guarantee for your Marriott Bonvoy Hotel Booking

With the Marriott Bonvoy Best Rate Guarantee policy, if you find a lower rate elsewhere, you have 24 hours after your reservation and at least 24 hours before your arrival to submit a claim.

Here are the other conditions:

  • The price found can be on a website or a mobile application;
  • Must be for the same hotel, same dates, same number of people and same room type;
  • Must be for the same fare type (free cancellation, prepaid, non-refundable, etc.);
  • CAA, Senior, promotional, package or other rates don’t work;
  • Secret auction websites don’t work (like Hotwire).
  • You must be an active Marriott Bonvoy member.

If they accept your request, Marriott Bonvoy will match the rate found elsewhere. Then, you have two choices:

  • receive an additional 25% discount
  • or 5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points ($45 value)

It’s up to you to calculate the best option!

See the map of Marriott Bonvoy hotels worldwide, for inspiration.

Marriott Best Rate – Step 1: Book the Hotel Room

I made a reservation at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver for a future 2-night stay in Vancouver. The room costs $507 per night. It’s expensive because my visit coincides with a festival during my dates.

Marriott Bonvoy: How to Use the Best Price Guarantee to Save Money - JW Parq original rate

But shortly after booking, I realized that the same room would have been cheaper if I’d booked it on another hotel booking website.

The same type of room, with the same Free Cancellation rate and the same dates on ClickTrip.com was $475. Therefore, it is $32 cheaper per night.

Marriott Bonvoy: How to Use the Best Price Guarantee to Save Money - ClickTrip JW Parq rate

So I could make a Best Rate Guarantee claim at Marriott Bonvoy!

Tip for Searching on Booking Sites

To check if your newly booked room is cheaper elsewhere, type the name of your Marriott hotel into Google.

Thus, the hotel’s file appears on the right side of the screen, as well as the price list of each website.

Marriott Bonvoy: How to Use the Best Price Guarantee to Save Money - Example Sheraton wall center price

As in the example above, at theSheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel that we have already visited, all prices appear. This can give you an indication of the cheapest price and save you the hassle of going through multiple booking sites one by one.

Then, to earn even more Marriott Bonvoy points, I’ll use my Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card to pay for this stay. I’ll earn 5 points per dollar spent at a Marriott Bonvoy hotel.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

Marriott Best Rate – Step 2: Complete the Best Price Guarantee Form

Secondly, you need to act quickly, as the request must be sent 24 hours after booking.

The Best Rate Guarantee claim form is on the Marriott Bonvoy website. It is very simple to fill out.

If you are already logged in to your Marriott Bonvoy member profile, several fields will already be filled in.

Write down the requested information, such as the reservation number, the website where you found the cheapest rate and the best rate you found.

Comments are optional. However, to help the customer service person who answers me (and also to have a better chance of my request being accepted!), I’ve given all the details.

Marriott Bonvoy: How to Use the Best Price Guarantee to Save Money - Application form for guaranteed rate

Finally, all that remains is to select the choice of compensation, for my 2 night stay.

An additional 25% off the found rate of $475 per night would result in a cost of about $360. That’s a lot better than what I booked as a room at $507! So I’d save about $150 a night.

Since it’s much more advantageous in my case to take the discount than the 5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points worth $45, I take the 25% without hesitation.

Then, all you have to do is send the application and wait.

Marriott Best Rate – Step 3: Receive the Response

I sent in my application at noon. The next day, I received the answer at 10:17 am. It’s pretty fast.

And it was accepted!

Marriott Bonvoy: How to Use the Best Price Guarantee to Save Money - Confirmation BRG approved

My new room rate is $359.

I then received an email of my modified reservation. Also, I could see the confirmation of the new rate in my Marriott Bonvoy profile.

But sometimes the application may be denied.

The rate found on the booking site can change over the hours, and unfortunately, customer service doesn’t see the best rate you’ve found. It happens!

Better luck next time.

For a Cheaper Rate on Your Hotel Room

It’s worth doing a little research after booking a hotel. This is an example for Marriott Bonvoy, but other hotel chains work in the same way.

So, for a hotel room bill that originally cost me $1,287 including fees and taxes, I was able to reduce it to $939.

I saved $348 with the Best Rate Guarantee, thanks to a few minutes of my time and a simple form.

If you have Marriott Bonvoy points, you can also check whether it’s more advantageous to pay in points rather than cash!

Bottom Line

The Marriott Bonvoy best rate guarantee is a powerful tool for reducing the cost of a stay, provided you know how to use it: you must book directly through Marriott, find a lower rate elsewhere for the same room, and submit a claim within 24 hours of booking. If Marriott accepts your request, you will receive either an additional 25% discount or 5,000 Bonvoy points, which can represent significant savings on your room rate.

Tip: Take the time to do your research right after booking. Often, just a few minutes is enough to spot a better rate online. Make sure to gather your proof (screenshots, links) before submitting the claim form. Even though approval isn’t guaranteed, it’s usually worth trying, as you could save hundreds of dollars on your stay.
