Review: Moxy Tromsø | Marriott Bonvoy

The Moxy Tromsø keeps things simple: compact rooms, a relaxed vibe and a spectacular common area on the 11th floor. Our review of the Moxy Tromsø comes down to one sentence: it is a modern base for exploring Tromsø and northern Norway, not a hotel where you spend your days in the room. We stayed with Marriott Bonvoy points and our Gold status.
In Tromsø, the scenery takes over before you even reach the hotel door: fjords, mountains and an Arctic light that changes with the seasons. The Moxy Tromsø makes the most of it. Unlike most Moxy hotels, where the front desk sits on the ground floor, the reception and bar here occupy the top of the building so every traveller gets the view.
Opened in 2023, the property has 208 rooms and is the northernmost hotel in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio. It follows the brand playbook: playful design, check-in at the bar with a welcome drink, and 18 m² rooms built to cover the basics. This setup suits travellers who plan to pack their days with excursions, but it will suit less those who want plenty of space or a wide range of services. Before booking, compare the cash rate with the number of Marriott Bonvoy points required. Prices vary a lot by season, especially when demand for northern lights viewing is high. Booking directly with Marriott also lets you enjoy program benefits and credit the night to your account. Room and service details are on the official Moxy Tromsø page on Marriott's site.
We paid 14,500 points per night for our standard room. We booked several months ahead with a cancellable reservation and rechecked the price every month. That routine saved us several thousand Bonvoy points on this stay. For more ideas along these lines, read our guide on saving on hotels with points.
Tromsø is the largest city in northern Norway, north of the Arctic Circle. The Moxy Tromsø sits on the island of Tromsøya, outside the tourist core. In return, it offers an open view of the fjords, the airport and the surrounding mountains.
After our overnight flight and a few hours' layover in Frankfurt, we arrived in the early afternoon. The weather was nice and we wanted to stretch our legs, so we walked from the airport to the hotel. The walk with luggage goes well: the sidewalk is wide, paved and separated from the road.
On arrival, the elevator goes straight to the 11th floor, where the check-in counter shares the space with the Sky Bar.
The rooms take up the lower floors of the tower and all measure 18 m². The choice is mostly between one large bed and two single beds, with the option to request a fjord-facing room. Whatever the category, the approach is the same: a modern, functional space designed as a base between excursions rather than a room to spend the day in.
The layout follows the usual Moxy playbook. Furniture is kept to the essentials, and several items hang on the wall to free up floor space. There is no desk as such, but a small shelf and movable seats let you work briefly on a laptop. The space is well used; the limited storage can become a nuisance on a longer stay or with several bags.
The room also covers common tech needs: high-speed Wi-Fi, built-in USB ports and a 55-inch TV that mirrors content from a personal device. Under the bed, a motion-activated LED light makes it easier to move around at night without turning on the whole room.
The bedding delivers most of the comfort, and the bathroom takes the same pared-down approach. It has a walk-in shower, a hair dryer and toiletries. Everything is within reach, without the roomy feel of a traditional hotel room.
The heart of the Moxy Tromsø is on the 11th floor. The Sky Bar brings together the reception, the bar and several areas to settle in, work or simply take in the scenery. Large windows face the fjord, the mountains and the airport runway; a terrace also lets you enjoy the view when the weather allows.
True to the brand's spirit, the lounge has an informal atmosphere and offers different spaces for groups and solo travellers alike. A pool table, a foosball table and board games round out the offer. This large common area makes up for much of the rooms' small size and becomes a natural meeting place at the end of the day.
The hotel also has a perfect view of the airport runway: you can watch planes on approach, with the mountain in the background.
Breakfast is served as a buffet, so you can start the day facing the panorama. The selection includes hot and cold choices, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options. Later, the Sky Bar serves cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, burgers and nachos, among other items. A selection of drinks, snacks and simple takeout dishes is available at all times.
A fitness centre is open 24 hours a day so you can keep up your routine. The Moxy Tromsø also offers luggage storage, paid on-site parking and electric vehicle charging stations. Pets are accepted for a fee. Wi-Fi is free for Marriott Bonvoy members.
The hotel is a 10-minute bus or car ride from downtown Tromsø. Several parks are within walking distance, though, including Prestvannet Park. This protected reserve, on the heights of Tromsø, is a place to spot many Arctic bird species in summer and the northern lights in winter.
The Moxy Tromsø does not try to copy the experience of a traditional hotel. It bets on compact rooms, streamlined services and large common spaces that showcase the landscape. That formula works well in Tromsø, where days are often spent on excursions and the hotel is a starting point for exploring the region.
Room size and the distance from downtown remain the main trade-offs. Still, the 11th-floor Sky Bar gives the property a strong personality and a pleasant setting for breakfast, working or ending the evening. For Marriott Bonvoy members, being able to earn or use points adds appeal to this address in northern Norway.
The Moxy Tromsø suits short stays, independent travellers and Marriott Bonvoy members who prefer a current vibe to a full range of services. Its main asset is the top-floor common space, which turns a functional address into a memorable hotel. We give it 9.5/10. If the Moxy formula appeals to you, also read our Moxy Belgrade review.
