Read on to find out whether the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery or the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* ends up taking the top prize.

The Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery and the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* are both great cards for earning cash back on your day-to-day purchases, especially thanks to their elevated earning rates across key spending categories.

In order to properly compare these two World Elite Mastercards, we’re going to dig into the following 6 categories:

Welcome Bonus

With rewards credit cards, welcome offers are often used to entice new cardholders, and they act as a nice way to get a boost on your cash back earnings.

With this in mind, for our first comparison category, we’re going to check out what each of these cards provides in terms of a welcome offer. We’re looking specifically at each card’s current offer, since these promos tend to change a few times a year.

BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD*

With the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD*, you can earn up to $650 in welcome bonus value, plus the annual fee is waived for the first year.

On top of that, the welcome offer currently includes a 0% introductory interest rate on balance transfers for 12 months, with a 2% transfer fee. This makes the card useful if you’re carrying a balance on another card and want to bring it over.

Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery

On the other side of this comparison, the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery doesn’t currently have a welcome offer.

Advantage: BMO CashBack® World Elite®* Mastercard®*

The BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* welcome offer of up to $650 in value is the clear winner, especially since the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery doesn’t offer one at this time.

The waived annual fee in year one and the 0% intro rate on balance transfers add even more first-year value, on top of the cash back bonus itself.

Minimum Income

BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD*

The minimum income requirement for the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* is $80,000 personal income or $150,000 household income.

Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery

The Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery also has a minimum income requirement of $80,000 personal or $150,000 household.

Draw

This category is a tie, since both the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery and the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* have identical minimum income requirements.

In fact, pretty much every single World Elite Mastercard in Canada uses the same minimum income threshold.

Annual Fee

BMO CashBack<sup data-lazy-src=
Neo World Elite<sup data-lazy-src=

BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD*

The BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* charges a $139 annual fee. However, the fee is currently waived for the first year as part of the welcome offer.

Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery

The annual fee for the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery is $149, with no first-year waiver.

Advantage: BMO CashBack® World Elite®* Mastercard®*

The annual fee gap between these two cards is only $10, so the difference is small on paper. The first-year waiver on the BMO card is what tips this category in its favour. You essentially save the full $139 in year one.

Without that first-year waiver, this would be a near-tie. From year two onward, the cards sit within $10 of each other, so the cash back rates matter much more than the fee itself.

Earning Cash Back

The BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* and the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery both earn cash back on every purchase you make. Their headline rates range from 1% to 5%, and Neo’s partner network can push the effective rate even higher.

BMO CashBack<sup data-lazy-src=
Neo World Elite<sup data-lazy-src=

BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD*

With the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD*, you earn cash back across the following tiered structure:

  • 5% cash back on groceries (on the first $500 you spend per statement cycle)
  • 4% cash back on transit, including ride sharing, taxis, and public transportation (on the first $300 you spend per statement cycle)
  • 3% cash back on gas and EV charging (on the first $300 you spend per statement cycle)
  • 2% cash back on recurring bill payments (on the first $500 you spend per statement cycle)
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases (no limit)

The BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* also comes with monthly caps on the elevated earning categories noted above.

After you reach these spending caps each month, your earning rate drops to the base rate of 1% cash back.

Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery

The Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery also uses a tiered cash back structure. As the name suggests, the card earns elevated rates on gas and groceries, as well as on recurring bill payments.

The cash back earning rates for the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery break down as follows:

  • 5% cash back on groceries (on the first $1,000 you spend per statement cycle)
  • 4% cash back on recurring bill payments (on the first $500 you spend per statement cycle)
  • 3% cash back on gas (on the first $1,000 you spend per statement cycle)
  • 1% cash back on everything else (no limit)

On top of these base rates, the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery also lets you earn up to 15% cash back at Neo’s network of 10,000+ partner merchants. The average partner rate is closer to 5%.

These partner earning opportunities show up in the Neo app, and the cash back stacks on top of your card’s set category rates.

Note that the spending caps on Neo’s namesake categories are twice as high as BMO’s on groceries and gas. That gives you a lot more room to earn at the elevated rate before dropping to the base.

Similarly to the BMO card, once you reach a monthly cap in any category, your earning rate falls to 1% for the rest of the cycle.

One useful detail for households: since April 15, 2026, Neo lets you add an authorized user card at no extra cost. If two adults pool their grocery and gas spending onto the same Neo account, you hit the $1,000 monthly caps faster and capture more of the elevated rate.

Advantage: Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery

For the cash back earning category, we’re giving the win to the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery. The higher monthly caps on both gas and groceries give you twice as much room to earn at the elevated rates compared to BMO, which directly translates into more cash back at the end of the month.

On top of that, Neo’s partner merchant network offers a real chance to earn up to 15% cash back on select purchases. This is a unique feature that BMO doesn’t match.

Redeeming Cash Back

One of the most appealing aspects of cash back credit cards is the simplicity of their rewards systems, and the fact that your earned cash back represents a guaranteed value.

That said, the way you actually get your cash back varies a bit between Canadian credit cards, and this is true of the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* and the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery as well.

Accessing your cash back with the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* is easy and flexible.

You can choose from the following options:

  • Request a one-time cash back deposit (minimum redemption amount of $1)

You can also choose to have your cash back deposited into your eligible BMO chequing, savings, or InvestorLine account, or as a statement credit onto your card.

Either redemption option can be set up through the BMO app or website. Just keep in mind that the one-off requests take around 2 to 5 business days to process.

Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery

With the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery, your cash back is automatically deposited into your Neo Rewards Wallet as soon as it’s earned.

You can then redeem this cash back whenever you want, either to pay down your credit card bill or to deposit it into your eligible Neo chequing or savings account, as long as you have at least $1 available.

To move your cash back, you simply log in to the Neo app, go to your Rewards Wallet, and choose where you’d like the money to go.

Draw

We’re calling this category a draw, since each card offers essentially the same options for accessing your cash back.

Namely, both the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery and the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* let you send your cash back to an eligible bank account or apply it to your credit card statement. That makes them equally easy to use.

Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery

The Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery comes with the following benefits:

Advantage: BMO CashBack® World Elite®* Mastercard®*

In comparing this category, both the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* and the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery provide a very similar list of helpful benefits.

That said, the BMO card offers a bit more on the perks side. The Instacart credit, car rental discounts, and complimentary roadside assistance ($75 per year value) tip this category in BMO’s favour.

Neo counters with its partner merchant network. However, that benefit is already factored into our cash back earning category, so we’re treating it separately here.

Bottom Line

Now that we’ve explored all 6 categories, which of these two cash-back-earning World Elite Mastercards is the winner?

The BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* took the win in 3 categories and tied in 2 more. However, the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery won the “earning cash back” category, which is arguably the most important of the bunch.

Both cards have real strengths, so the best option for you mostly comes down to your spending habits.

If you spend more than $500 a month on gas or groceries, and you think you can get extra cash back through Neo’s network of merchant partners, then the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery is probably the better fit.

On the other hand, if you can use BMO’s extra perks like complimentary roadside assistance and car rental discounts, or you’d rather have your annual fee waived in year one, the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* World EliteMD* is the better call.

One last thing to keep in mind: the Neo World Elite® Mastercard – Gas & Grocery is now one of three Neo World Elite plans. If you spend more on dining and shopping than on gas and groceries, the Shop & Dine plan (5% on food & drink, 3% on shopping) is likely a better fit. And if your spending is spread across categories, the Everywhere plan offers 2% on the first $4,000 per month with no category to track. Our breakdown of Neo’s six new cards by profile shows the net cash back for each.
