We went to Venice for 5 days with our family. What could be better than staying at the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa, a hotel located on the private island Isola delle Rose in Venice, just 20 minutes from the sights of the Serenissima?

The JW Marriott hotels are part of the luxury range of Marriott Bonvoy as well as :

  • The Luxury Collection,
  • St. Regis
  • W Hotels
  • Edition
  • The Ritz-Carlton

The goal of the JW Marriott, if I may say? To offer peaceful places so that their customers can benefit from the present moment as well as to recharge their batteries.

Inspired by the principle of mindfulness, JW Marriott is a peaceful haven designed to allow you to focus on feeling good – present in the mind, nourished in the body and revitalized in the spirit.

JW Marriott

The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa is thus located in a quiet environment, with its olive grove and gardens; far from the tourists who tread the cobblestones of the city of Venice. Between swimming pool and relaxation, you will enjoy Venice differently.

See also our report on the Danieli Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, where we stayed one night. A very different hotel, more traditional and authentic.

Booking

The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa is a 5 star hotel, category 7 of theMarriott Bonvoy program. It is possible to stay there from 50,000 points per night.

Knowing that we visited this establishment in the early summer of 2021, the occupancy rate was not high: the price in cash was 190 euros per night.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

Location

The hotel is located 20 minutes from the famous St. Mark’s Square. A maritime shuttle takes us there free of charge and makes the connection throughout the day, at all hours of the day from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. The embarkation pier is located near the Royal Gardens of Venice.

The hotel has 227 rooms and 39 suites.

Review : JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa | Marriott Bonvoy - JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa-002

The walk on the lagoon is already an opportunity to relax, to observe the boats, churches, historical buildings or the Italian rowers practicing.

Hotel reception

Once off the boat, we are warmly welcomed on the island. Our luggage is quickly taken care of from the boat. We will get them later in our rooms.

First of all, we pass through a waiting room for passengers waiting for the shuttle to return to Venice. A thermal scanner to control the temperature is posted at the entrance, but it was not checked at our various passages.

A beautiful weeping willow and a swing set the scene. It feels like a retreat already. Then you can see the maritime parking for private boats or taxis.

The environment is soothing and calm, there are even cicadas.

The complex was designed by the Italian architect Matteo Thun who tried to integrate the buildings into the landscape with its paths and canals. The hotel has also received several major awards in recent years, such as the latest in 2020, the 1st Grand Champion Hotel awarded by Traveller Made.

A little history: the island dates from 1870 and before being the JW Marriott hotel, the place was a clinic for more than a hundred years!

Review : JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa | Marriott Bonvoy - JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa-014

We then arrive at the main building, accessible by stairs or a ramp. While Jean-Maximilien gets our room keys, I take a look around.

The interior decoration is sober, with a contemporary style. The Mediterranean colours give it a fresh look.

Our room

We used two little houses, as my mother-in-law accompanied us on this trip. After several discussions with the management, we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a loft house for our part, located in a quiet area with a pool.

Review : JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa | Marriott Bonvoy - JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa-033

These houses consist of a large lounge decorated in soft, natural wood tones, with touches of green and blue. The herringbone tiling completes the room nicely.

The accessories are modern. Wi Fi, a Bose sound system, a fast charge socket for the telephone, a radio alarm clock adapted to the Iphone. And as a bonus, a small welcome gift on the counter.

The living room is connected to a shower room with toilet and a dressing room on the ground floor. There is also a coffee machine. Everything is very functional, simple and beautiful.

The room is then accessed via the staircase. The glass railing lets the light through. The windows go up to the first floor! Beautiful. This gives the room an impression of grandeur and a beautiful luminosity.

The room is a bit narrower than the living room, but very nice. We find the same linearity in the colours and the decor.

At the top of the stairs is a closet that complements the lower dressing room. I imagine one for Mrs. upstairs and the other for Mr. on the ground floor since the upstairs one is quite small. A safe is available and two bathrobes are provided.

The beige bathroom is modern, sober and minimalist. Ceramic and chrome are used. Two glass doors, one for the toilet and a bidet, and the other for the shower.

The view from the room is nice. No opposite house, only greenery and the view on our garden and private swimming pool!

Here is a glimpse of the second house where my mother-in-law and our children slept. This time, a sofa bed on the ground floor and a more furnished terrace area instead of the pool.

Hotel services

The island offers you to sit down at one of its different restaurants. There is no shortage of choice. And on a positive note, the vegetables and fruit are grown on site and olive oil tastings are even possible!

  • Sagra rooftop restaurant: casual, for lunch and dinner. The best part is its view on the lagoon of Venice.
  • the Italian restaurant Fiola in Dopolavoro Venexia: Venetian cuisine is served in this gourmet restaurant.
  • the Rose Lounge Bar, in the lobby of the main building. Coffee, cocktail or glass of wine, it’s up to you!
  • the Cucina daily restaurant, for a champion breakfast before starting your visits in Venice.
  • Dispensa Charcuterie, for snacks, drinks, coffee to go.
  • Giardino, for a drink next to the pool and gardens.

The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa also offers its catering service for a picnic for two or with friends in the garden. Cushions, tablecloth, baskets all ready, everything is set to allow you to spend a beautiful moment in the calm and shade of the olive trees.

Here are some pictures of these different spaces.

Bar Lounge Rose

Very nice bar, the tempered glass shelves lighten the marble counter of the bar. Green chairs and flowers add colour.

Comfortable sofas and chairs are arranged around a table of 4. A grand piano adorns the space. The hotel’s shops are right next door.

Cucina Buffet

A complete buffet, with quality products. We really liked it! Indoor or outdoor, both are appreciated.

Review : JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa | Marriott Bonvoy - JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa-154

Dispensa Charcuterie

A very friendly welcome at the counter. I was able to get some good sandwiches made. Local products are on sale.

Sagra

As much as we liked the service at the swimming pool, we were not won over in the evening. I was disappointed with my appetizer, far too small for the cost of the dish.

Review : JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa | Marriott Bonvoy - JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa-086

Dopolavoro

We didn’t eat there (closed due to COVID-19) but the ochre building is beautiful. Right next to it, there are apricot trees. A meal in nature!

Gardens

When you arrive on the island of Isola delle Rose, you feel that nature is preserved, put forward. The gardens are beautifully maintained. We loved the environment between pine trees, lime trees, olive trees, etc. You can ride your bike along the trails, which we really enjoyed.

Swimming pool

On the island you will find three communal pools. The one on the roof of the main building is overlooking the Venice lagoon.

Review : JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa | Marriott Bonvoy - JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa-147

The other two (one of which is actually a sort of children’s pool) are in the gardens, surrounded by trees. There are also games for children.

Children were strongly encouraged to use the pools in the garden to preserve the silence of the roof terrace.

However, we were very bothered by mosquitoes in the gardens or bees at the games, so much so that Jean-Maximilien preferred to return to the first one with the children. Especially since our son could touch the bottom of the adult pool (facing Venice) as opposed to the children’s pool in the garden!

Fitness room

The fitness room is in a separate building, as is the Spa located next door.

Numerous machines are available. Good lighting, well ventilated, and they provide you with a bag at the reception if you don’t have the right equipment.

The Kids Club

The Kids Club service is subject to a fee. We had taken it so that we could work and the kids could have fun while we did. We had to pick them up during the lunch breaks. The team took good care of them even though we had a hard time entrusting our son. The team offered them various activities such as decorating a Venetian mask, doing gymnastics, a botanical walk, karaoke, etc.

Please note that you can take a daily room rate of 50 euros (useful if you have several children). This package also includes the rental of bicycles on the complex.

Otherwise, it will cost you 35 euros per child for access to the Kids Club per day.

Other activities

Several packages are available. You can cook, learn how to make a particular cocktail, go to the spa, decorate a Venice mask, use the bicycles, visit the Burano lace or Murano glass factory, taste the island’s olive oil, etc. There’s no shortage of activities!

Business Center

A business center is available to guests with two computer stations and a printer.

Our general impression of the hotel

All in all, the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa is a very nice hotel if you need to recharge your batteries. As the afternoons were hot, we enjoyed being able to spend our days working at the pool and taking the shuttle bus to a restaurant in the center Venice at the end of the day.
