Overview

Delta SkyMiles is the loyalty program of Delta Air Lines, the only North American member of the SkyTeam alliance. With direct flights from Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, the program deserves the attention of Canadian travelers. This guide covers everything you need to know to earn and redeem Delta SkyMiles from Canada.

SkyMiles are nicknamed « SkyPesos » in the points and miles community because Delta uses aggressive dynamic pricing for its award flights. The price in miles varies by date, route, and cabin class. Despite this, certain opportunities offer interesting value, especially from Canada.

How Much Is a Delta SkyMile Worth?

Due to dynamic pricing, the value of a SkyMile fluctuates considerably. On average, expect approximately 1.1 cents US per mile (about 1.5 cents CA per mile at the current exchange rate). However, certain deals like Flash Sales or partner flights on Korean Air can offer up to 3 to 4 cents CA per mile.

If you hold a U.S. Delta credit card with the 15% discount on award flights, the effective value rises to approximately 1.3 cents US per mile.

Earning Delta SkyMiles in Canada

Earning SkyMiles from Canada requires a bit more creativity than for other programs. Here are the methods accessible to Canadian travelers.

Flying with Delta and Its Partners

On a ticket purchased directly from Delta, SkyMiles members earn miles based on their elite status:

StatusMiles per $1 US Spent
Basic Member5 miles
Silver Medallion7 miles
Gold Medallion8 miles
Platinum Medallion9 miles
Diamond Medallion11 miles

Basic Economy tickets do not earn miles. This is an important point to keep in mind when booking.

For flights with partner airlines like WestJet, Air France/KLM (Flying Blue), or Korean Air, earning is based on a percentage of the distance flown (between 25% and 300%), depending on the booking class.

American Express Membership Rewards Transfer

This is the primary method to fund your SkyMiles account from Canada. The American Express Membership Rewards program allows you to transfer points to Delta SkyMiles at a ratio of 1:1 (1,000 Membership Rewards = 1,000 SkyMiles).

This ratio is comparable to what several other transfer partners offer, making it a reasonable way to top up your SkyMiles balance for a specific booking.

Among the best Membership Rewards credit cards, the American Express Cobalt Card stands out. It earns up to 5 points per dollar spent on groceries and dining, making it a powerful tool for building a balance of transferable points.

The American Express Cobalt® Card is the best credit card from American Express, whether you want points for travel or cash back.

American Express Cobalt® Card welcome offer

The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer we value at $255.

Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.

You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.

You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:

  • 15,000 Aeroplan points
  • 15,000 Avios points
  • 15,000 Flying Blue Miles
  • 18,000 Marriott Bonvoy points

If hotel points are what you are after, our ultimate guide to Marriott Bonvoy and our complete map of Marriott Bonvoy hotels by category show what those points can actually buy.

American Express Cobalt® Card benefits

Here is what the card gives you, starting with the benefits cardholders use most.

  • 5X points on eligible eats and drinks in Canada: groceries, restaurants and bars, home food delivery and convenience stores. A spend cap applies.
  • 3X points on eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada.
  • 2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
  • 1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.
  • 1X point per dollar on everything else, with no category restrictions.
  • Points that hold the same value either way: 1,000 points = $10 as a statement credit, or a 1:1 transfer to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
  • No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
  • Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
  • The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
  • Front Of The Line® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
  • A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.

To see how it compares with the rest of the line-up, read our round-up of the best credit cards from American Express in Canada.

The 5X categories and where they apply

The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers four kinds of merchants:

  • Groceries: Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, Safeway, Whole Foods.
  • Restaurants and bars: sit-down meals, takeout and drinks.
  • Home food delivery.
  • Convenience stores: Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven.

The 2X rate covers gas stations such as Esso, Shell and Petro-Canada, along with public transit and ride sharing.

With the American Express Cobalt® Card, you earn between 1 and 5 points per dollar:

Category Points per dollar
Grocery (Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, etc.) 5
Home food delivery 5
Restaurants and bars 5
Convenience stores 5
Streaming services 3
Service station 2
Transport 2
Travel 1
Other 1

That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.

You can also stack these categories with the hundreds of stores that offer 5x points.

American Express Cobalt® Card insurance coverage

The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.

Travel insurance

  • Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
  • Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
  • Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
  • Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
  • Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
  • Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.

Rental car insurance

Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.

Mobile device insurance

Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.

Purchase protection and extended warranty

Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.

American Express Cobalt® Card fees

  • Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.

  • Purchase interest rate: 21.99%.
  • Cash advance interest rate: 21.99%.
  • Foreign transaction fee: 2.5%.

Transfer from Hotel Programs

Several hotel programs allow you to convert points to SkyMiles. This is generally not recommended, unless your hotel points are at risk of expiring without use.

Buying Delta SkyMiles

Delta allows you to purchase SkyMiles directly on its website, but the base cost is approximately 3.5 cents US per mile. This is almost three times the average value of a SkyMile. This option is only worthwhile if you need a small top-up to reach a specific booking threshold.

Before buying miles, check if it is more advantageous to transfer American Express Membership Rewards to your Delta account.

Delta SkyMiles Shopping Portal

Delta has an online shopping portal that offers bonus miles at over 1,000 retailers. Rates vary from 1 to 15 miles per dollar spent. However, the retailer must ship to Canada to take advantage.

This is a simple way to earn a few extra miles, but Rakuten portals or other programs often offer superior flexibility for Canadians.

Redeeming Delta SkyMiles

The best use of your SkyMiles remains redeeming them for flights. Delta uses dynamic pricing: there is no fixed award chart. The number of miles required varies constantly based on demand, date, and route.

Delta and Partner Flights

Search for award flights directly on delta.com by checking « Shop with Miles. » The flexible calendar helps identify the cheapest dates. Delta award tickets are fully refundable (except Basic Economy), which allows you to rebook if the price in miles drops.

For partner flights, Delta sometimes displays interesting rates on Korean Air, LATAM, or WestJet. Partner pricing is increasingly aligned with Delta’s prices, but some exceptions remain.

Deals and Flash Sales

Delta regularly launches Flash Sales with reduced mileage prices. In the past, we have seen round trips to Europe for 34,000 miles or short flights starting at 5,900 miles. These offers are in Basic Economy class.

Keep an eye on offers by subscribing to our newsletter so you don’t miss anything.

SkyMiles Sweet Spots for Canadians

Here are some of the best uses of SkyMiles from Canada:

  • WestJet flights via Delta: Book WestJet flights with SkyMiles starting at 12,500 miles one-way to Orlando or other U.S. destinations. Only $6 in taxes when departing from the United States. This is one of the best values in the program.
  • Korean Air short-haul: Short flights on Korean Air at 7,500 SkyMiles and $25 CA in taxes offer value that can reach 3.7 cents per mile.
  • LATAM to South America: A round trip from New York to São Paulo in economy costs approximately 66,000 SkyMiles, often on a direct flight.
  • Drinks at the Delta Sky Club: If you have a few SkyMiles remaining and lounge access, premium drinks offer approximately 1.2 cents US per mile.

Other Redemption Options

Delta also allows you to redeem SkyMiles for checked bags, seat upgrades, vacation packages, hotels via Delta Stays, and exclusive experiences. Most of these options offer less than 1 cent per mile, except vacation packages which are around 1.6 cents CA per mile.

SkyTeam Partner Airlines

Delta is part of the SkyTeam alliance, which allows you to earn and redeem SkyMiles with about twenty airlines:

Core PartnersOther Partners
AeroméxicoAirBaltic
Air FranceCape Air
China EasternEL AL
KLMAerolíneas Argentinas
Korean AirChina Airlines
LATAM AirlinesHawaiian Airlines
Virgin AtlanticITA Airways
Kenya Airways
SAS
WestJet

« Core » partners offer better earning conditions and more redemption opportunities than other partners. For Canadians, WestJet is a key partner thanks to its domestic network.

Delta Medallion Status

Delta offers four elite status levels: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Since recent changes, qualification is based solely on Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQD), meaning dollars spent on Delta and partner flights.

StatusMQD RequiredKey Benefits
Silver$5,000 USFree upgrade 24 hours before flight, 1 free checked bag
Gold$10,000 USUpgrade 3 days before, SkyPriority, SkyTeam lounge access
Platinum$15,000 USUpgrade 5 days before, one Choice Benefit
Diamond$28,000 USMaximum priority, free CLEAR Plus, multiple Choice Benefits

All Medallion members enjoy one free checked bag for themselves and up to 8 companions. U.S. Delta cardholders can earn up to $10,000 in « Head Start » MQD, sufficient for Gold status.

For most Canadians, reaching Medallion status through flights alone is difficult. If you travel frequently with Delta, Gold status remains the most realistic thanks to the combination of flights + card spending.

Delta SkyMiles Credit Cards

There is no co-branded Delta SkyMiles credit card in Canada. All Delta cards are issued by American Express in the United States. If you have access to U.S. credit cards, here is an overview of the options:

Delta SkyMiles: Is It Worth It?

For Canadians, Delta SkyMiles is not a priority program. The absence of a credit card in Canada and Delta’s aggressive dynamic pricing make it less attractive than programs like Aeroplan or Flying Blue, even if the Membership Rewards transfer ratio (1:1) is competitive.

That said, SkyMiles remains useful in three specific situations:

  • You have earned miles by flying Delta: You might as well use them on award flights or during Flash Sales.
  • You are booking WestJet flights via Delta: Rates at 12,500 miles with minimal taxes are among the best deals in the program.
  • You hold U.S. Delta cards: Companion certificates and Delta Sky Club access add considerable value.
