RBC Avion vs WestJet RBC World Elite: Which One (or Both)?

Published August 8, 202611 min readEditorial integrity

Two RBC cards chase the same Canadian traveller, but they do not play the same game. RBC Avion vs WestJet RBC World Elite comes down to one thing: how loyal you are to WestJet, plus a bridge almost nobody uses, the transfer of Avion points into WestJet Rewards.

This comparison picks a side. You will find the side by side table, the transfer ratio as RBC publishes it, three worked scenarios and the case for holding both cards. To widen the field, see our page of best credit cards.

The side by side comparison

First, the facts. The table below uses RBC’s published figures for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite and the WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard‡.

Two 70,000 point offers, then, but in two different currencies. An Avion point and a WestJet point are not worth the same thing, and that gap decides the comparison.

Transferring Avion points to WestJet

What RBC actually publishes

RBC converts 100 Avion points into 1 WestJet dollar, which is worth roughly $1 against the base fare. The transfer minimum is 1,000 Avion points. That sentence is the only wording the official Avion Rewards terms support.

WestJet, for its part, states that 100 WestJet points are worth about $1 off the base fare, surcharges, bags and seats. On taxes and fees, expect 105 to 115 points per dollar instead. For the full picture, see our WestJet Rewards program page.

WestJet dollars or WestJet points?

Here is the wrinkle nobody explains. RBC still labels the conversion in “WestJet dollars”, a currency WestJet has since replaced with “WestJet points”. Both documents describe the same mechanic, but the two vocabularies no longer line up.

The only transfer open to Distinction members

Avion Rewards has two membership tiers. Avion Elite members, meaning holders of Avion branded cards such as the RBC Avion Visa Infinite, can reach all four airline partners. Avion Distinction members, meaning holders of the RBC Ion and Ion+ cards, have exactly one exit: WestJet.

WestJet Rewards: 100 Avion points = 1 WestJet dollar, 1,000 point minimum
British Airways Executive Club: 1 point = 1 Avios, 10,000 point minimum
American Airlines AAdvantage: 10 points = 7 miles, 5,000 point minimum, in increments of 10
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles: 1 point = 1 mile, 10,000 point minimum
Hudson’s Bay Rewards: 500 points = 1,000 Hudson’s Bay points, see conditions

Our Avion points transfer guide covers the mechanics.

When the transfer is worth it

Two situations make the transfer pay. First, if you are an Avion Distinction member. In the booking portal, that tier redeems 172 points per dollar, or 0.58 cents per point. Take 10,000 points: the portal returns roughly $58, while the WestJet transfer returns $100.

Second, if you are short of WestJet points on a booking already in progress. The 1,000 point minimum stays low, so you can close a small gap without waiting. However, never transfer speculatively, because the conversion runs one way only.

When it destroys value

If you are an Avion Elite member, the transfer burns value. RBC’s air travel redemption chart returns between 2.00 and 2.33 cents per point. For example, 15,000 points cover a round trip to an adjacent province, territory or U.S. state with a base fare of up to $350, which works out to 2.33 cents per point. The WestJet transfer caps out at 1 cent.

In other words, you cut your value in half at best. Moreover, an Avion Elite member already gets 100 points per dollar in the booking portal, the same rate as the transfer. Our Avion Rewards program page lists the full chart.

Three worked scenarios

The WestJet only traveller

You fly WestJet four or five times a year. The WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard‡ pays 60,000 points in year one, then 10,000 more on your first anniversary. At the Milesopedia valuation of 1.0 cent per WestJet point, those 70,000 points represent $700 against a $139 annual fee.

Now assume $20,000 of annual spending, with $8,000 on gas and groceries: 16,000 points at 2 points per dollar, plus 18,000 points on the remaining $12,000 at 1.5. Total: 34,000 points, or $340 a year.

The multi airline traveller

You compare fares before picking a carrier. The RBC Avion Visa Infinite pays 55,000 points in year one, then 15,000 on your first anniversary. On the fixed chart, 55,000 points already cover a round trip with a base fare of up to $1,100. At 65,000 points, Europe opens up with a base fare capped at $1,300.

Take the same $20,000 of spending, with $6,000 on travel. At 1.25 points per dollar, travel returns 7,500 points; the remaining $14,000 at 1 point per dollar adds 14,000 points. Total: 21,500 points. Fewer raw points, yet each is worth 1.5 to 2.33 cents. Annual value therefore lands between $322 and more than $500.

The family of four

Here the WestJet card pulls ahead on something points cannot measure. The first checked bag is free for the cardholder and for up to 8 guests on the same booking. Four people, round trip, means eight bags covered by one benefit. We do not put a dollar figure on that saving, since WestJet does not publish a baggage rate in our reference data.

The annual companion voucher starts at $119 in economy across Canada and the continental U.S. Alternatively, you can exchange it for 30% off a solo flight, a $200 credit on a package, or 2 lounge passes. Our ranking of the best WestJet credit cards puts that perk in context.

The both cards strategy

Which one to apply for first

Start with the WestJet card, for two reasons. First, its offer expires on November 4, 2026, three weeks ahead of the Avion offer set for November 25, 2026. Second, its $5,000 threshold must be hit within 3 months, against 6 months on the Avion card. So attack the tighter clock first.

The income requirement confirms that order. The WestJet card asks for $80,000 personal, against $60,000 on the Avion card. Clear the first filter and you clear the second.

What your credit file absorbs

Two applications mean two credit checks. Space them a few weeks apart. However, do not assume anything about RBC’s internal rules, because our sources contain no published limit on how many cards you may hold with the issuer. Confirm that point with your advisor.

On cost, budget $259 in combined annual fees, meaning $120 plus $139. Add $50 and $59 if you want an additional card on each. That recurring bill belongs in the maths, not just the first year bonuses.

How the two offers stack

The two bonuses do not overlap, since they live in separate programs. In total, you are chasing 70,000 Avion points and 70,000 WestJet points. At Milesopedia valuations, that is $1,050 on one side and $700 on the other, so $1,750 against $259 in fees.

On spending, you need $5,000 in 3 months, then $5,000 in 6 months. By staggering the applications, you therefore spread $10,000 of purchases across roughly nine months. Finally, the Avion to WestJet transfer becomes a safety net, though at 1 cent per Avion point.

The two current welcome offers

The verdict by profile

You almost always fly WestJet: take the WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard‡. The 2 points per dollar on flights carry the card on their own.
You travel as a family: same card. The free checked bag for up to 8 guests is the most valuable perk across both products.
You compare carriers: take the RBC Avion Visa Infinite. The fixed chart returns 2.00 to 2.33 cents per point.
You are aiming for Europe: Avion again. At 65,000 points, a round trip with a base fare of up to $1,300 comes into range.
You already hold an RBC Ion or Ion+ card: the WestJet transfer is your best exit, since the Distinction portal returns only 0.58 cents per point.
You can route $10,000 of spending over nine months: take both, starting with the WestJet card.

You want lounge access: neither card includes it. The DragonPass membership grants access to the program, not to the visits.
Your income sits below $60,000 personal: neither card clears the eligibility filter.
You planned to move Avion Elite points to WestJet: reconsider, because you give up at least half their value.

Conclusion

The question is not which card is better, but which currency serves you best. WestJet rewards loyalty and family travel; Avion rewards flexibility and long haul. The bridge between them exists, yet it runs one way.

If you are still torn, pull up your flight history from the past two years. A majority of WestJet segments settles the debate. Finally, to catch the next bonus, sign up for our newsletter.

Frequently Asked Questions about transferring Avion points to WestJet

Here are the questions readers ask most often about moving Avion points into WestJet Rewards, and about choosing between RBC’s two travel cards.

Can you transfer Avion points to WestJet?

Yes. WestJet Rewards is an official Avion Rewards transfer partner. You request the transfer from your Avion account after linking your WestJet member number. The conversion runs one way only: once the points land at WestJet, you cannot move them back. Our Avion points transfer guide covers every step.

What is the Avion to WestJet transfer ratio?

RBC converts 100 Avion points into 1 WestJet dollar, which is worth roughly $1 against the base fare. Watch the terminology: RBC still says “WestJet dollars”, while WestJet now talks about “WestJet points”. Neither company publishes the equivalence “100 Avion points equal 100 WestJet points”, so we do not repeat it.

What is the minimum Avion transfer to WestJet?

The minimum is 1,000 Avion points, the lowest threshold among the Avion Rewards transfer partners. By comparison, British Airways Executive Club and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles require 10,000 points. That low floor makes the transfer handy right before a booking.

Can Avion Distinction members transfer to WestJet?

Yes, and it is their only transfer option. Avion Distinction members, meaning holders of the RBC Ion and Ion+ cards, can convert points to WestJet and nowhere else. The other three airline programs stay reserved for Avion Elite members. For this tier the transfer makes sense, since the Distinction portal redeems at 172 points per dollar.

Is transferring Avion points to WestJet worth it?

It depends on your membership tier. For an Avion Distinction member, yes: 10,000 points are worth roughly $58 in the portal, against $100 after the transfer. For an Avion Elite member, no: RBC’s air travel redemption chart returns 2.00 to 2.33 cents per point, while the transfer caps at 1 cent. See our Avion Rewards program page.

What are the other Avion Rewards transfer partners?

Besides WestJet, Avion Elite members convert to British Airways Executive Club at 1 point for 1 Avios, to American Airlines AAdvantage at 10 points for 7 miles, and to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles at 1 point for 1 mile. Hudson’s Bay Rewards accepts 500 Avion points for 1,000 of its own points.

Should I pick the Avion card or the WestJet World Elite?

If most of your flights carry the WestJet logo, take the WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard‡ for its 2 points per dollar, its free checked bag and its companion voucher. If you compare carriers before every purchase, take the RBC Avion Visa Infinite instead, since its fixed chart returns up to 2.33 cents per point.

Can you apply for both RBC cards at once?

Nothing in the published terms stops you, but two applications trigger two credit checks. Space them a few weeks apart and confirm with RBC. Start with the WestJet card, whose offer ends on November 4, 2026.

1 This offer only applies to new applications for an RBC Avion Visa Infinite or RBC Avion Visa Platinum credit card (each, an “Eligible Credit Card”) received between “August 13, 2026” and “November 25, 2026” (“Offer Period”) and approved by Royal Bank of Canada (“Royal Bank”) subject to the conditions below. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the Eligible Credit Card account, as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account transferring to an Eligible Credit Card account during the Offer Period, are not eligible for the offer.

35,000 welcome Avion points (“Welcome Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty (60) days after your application has been approved, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Welcome points are credited to your account, “good standing” meaning that your Eligible Credit Card account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive credit card account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status.

You will receive 20,000 bonus Avion points (“Bonus Points”) if a total of $5,000 or more (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transactions”) are posted to your Eligible Credit Card account within the first six (6) months from your Eligible Credit Card account opening date (“Period”). The Bonus Points will appear on your monthly credit card statement within sixty days (60) after you reach $5,000 in Qualifying Transactions, provided your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Bonus Points are credited to your account.

Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges and fees. Credits for returns and adjustments posted to your Eligible Credit Card account during the Period will reduce the amount of your Qualifying Transactions. The Qualifying Transaction Amount is based on the transaction posting date of each Qualifying Transaction, not the transaction date. This means that transactions that take place prior to the last day of the Period will not be considered for the Qualifying Transaction Amount if they have not yet been posted or processed by the merchant, the payment network (Visa) or Royal Bank by the last day of the Period.

15,000 additional Avion points (“Anniversary Points”) will appear on your monthly credit card statement within twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks after the one- year anniversary of your account opening, provided that your Eligible Credit Card account remains open and in good standing at the time the Anniversary Points are credited to your account.

If you close or change your Eligible Credit Card Account for another type of RBC Royal Bank credit card before the Welcome Points, the Bonus Points and/or the Anniversary Points have been credited to your account, you may lose the benefit of this offer. This offer may not be combined or used in conjunction with any other offer. Royal Bank reserves the right to cancel, modify or withdraw this offer at any time without notice, even after your application has been approved, including if we suspect that you may be manipulating or abusing it, or engaging in any suspicious or fraudulent activity, as determined by Royal Bank in its sole discretion. For complete terms and conditions that apply to the Avion Rewards Program, please visit www.avionrewards.com or call 1-800-769-2512.

^Point redemptions for flights under the Air Travel Redemption Schedule start at 7,500 points for a short-haul one-way Economy Class flight priced at no more than $175 (and start at 15,000 points for a short-haul round-trip Economy Class flight priced at no more than $350). The traveller is responsible for all applicable taxes, administration fees and surcharges. 2 Avion points are earned on qualifying net purchases only; they are not earned on cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant) interest charges or fees, and credits for returns and adjustments will reduce or cancel the points earned by the amounts originally charged.

4 To participate in this offer, you must have an RBC debit card or a credit card which is issued by Royal Bank of Canada (excluding RBC commercial credit cards) (“RBC Card”). RBC business clients will only be able to link up to two (2) RBC business credit cards and one (1) RBC business debit card to a Petro-Points card.

You must be enrolled in RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app in order to link your RBC Card to your Petro-Points card. Card linking may take up to 2 business days to process before savings and bonus points can be applied to purchases. A linked RBC Card means an RBC Card linked to a Petro-Points Account. Your linked RBC Card acts as your Petro-Points card. You will automatically earn Petro-Points when you pay for qualifying purchases with your linked RBC Card at Petro-Canada locations and you do not need to swipe your Petro-Points card before you pay. You can redeem your Petro-Points at Petro-Canada using your linked RBC Card. Each time you use your linked RBC Card to purchase any grade of gasoline, or diesel, at a Petro-Canada location, you will save three cents ($0.03) per litre at the time of the transaction.

6 Each time you use your linked Eligible Avion Rewards Credit Card to pay for purchases at a Petro-Canada Location, you will earn a bonus of twenty percent (20%) more Avion points than you normally earn for every $1 in purchases in accordance with the Avion Rewards Terms and Conditions. Authorized Users are excluded from earning Avion points bonus.

Even though some merchants may sell travel products/services, purchases made at these locations may not necessarily qualify for the 1.25 Avion points per dollar if the merchant is not classified with a “travel” MCC. Also, merchants that are not classified by a “travel” MCC may be located on the premises of merchants that are classified with a “travel” MCC, and purchases made at these locations may not qualify for this added benefit. You can redeem the Be Well points you earn for eligible purchases—see section 5 of the Be Well terms (available at https://www.letsbewell.ca/terms-conditions)—or for another purpose that we may provide from time to time.

You must have joined the Be Well program and registered your Be Well card, or otherwise called customer service, to redeem Be Well points. Any Be Well points earned on a Be Well card will remain the property of the Be Well administrator until the enrollment and registration process is complete.

You must redeem a minimum of 25,000 Be Well points at any time, which are worth $10. Be Well points can be redeemed in $10 increments, up to a maximum of $200 (500,000 Be Well points) in a single transaction. A maximum of 500,000 Be Well points can be redeemed within a 24-hour period.

In Ontario and British Columbia, Be Well points cannot be redeemed for prescription drugs. As the laws of each province and territory may change from time to time, you are encouraged to consult your pharmacist for more information in this regard.

Be Well points you earn when you make a purchase cannot be redeemed immediately for that same purchase. They can only be redeemed for a future eligible purchase that must be made at least 12 hours after earning those Be Well points.
