How PayPal Works: A Guide for Canadians

How PayPal Works: A Guide for Canadians
Share

PayPal Canada is one of the most widely used online payment platforms in the country. It allows you to send money, receive payments, and make purchases on thousands of merchant sites. Whether you’re buying on eBay, paying for a Netflix subscription, or reimbursing a friend, PayPal acts as an intermediary between your bank account (or credit card) and the recipient.

This guide covers everything you need to know: account creation, fees, buyer and seller protection, transfer times, and alternatives. As a bonus, some tips for reducing costs related to international transactions.

What is PayPal Canada

PayPal is a digital wallet that serves as an intermediary during your transactions. Instead of sharing your banking information with a merchant, you log in to your PayPal account and authorize the payment. The merchant receives their money but never has access to your card number.

The platform has been active in Canada since 2006 and has approximately 6.4 million active accounts in the country. PayPal accepts payments in Canadian dollars (CAD), US dollars (USD), and over 100 currencies. You can use it on a computer, tablet, or via the mobile app (iOS and Android).

Creating a PayPal Account in Canada

Registration is free. PayPal offers two types of accounts depending on your needs: personal or business.

Personal Account

The personal account is suitable for individuals who want to pay online or send money to friends and family. To create it, you must provide:

  • Your email address
  • Your full name
  • Your postal address in Canada
  • Your phone number

Next, link a payment method: a Canadian bank account, credit card, or debit card. PayPal uses this source to fund your transactions.

Business Account

The business account is intended for merchants, self-employed workers, and SMEs. In addition to personal information, PayPal requests:

  • The legal name of the company
  • The type of business
  • The business number or SIN (as applicable)

This account provides access to invoicing, integration with Shopify or WooCommerce, and the ability to receive credit card payments. Additionally, PayPal Complete Payments allows you to accept Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other methods.

Account Verification

PayPal may ask you to verify your identity and bank account. Verification typically takes 2 to 3 business days. It confirms that you are indeed the holder of the associated bank account.

Without verification, your sending limits remain low. With a verified account, you can send up to $60,000 USD per transaction, according to PayPal. However, the platform may apply lower internal limits depending on the risk profile.

How to Pay with PayPal

PayPal sits between you and the seller during an online purchase. The process takes place in a few steps.

  • 1. Choose PayPal at checkout: on the merchant’s site, select PayPal as your payment method.
  • 2. Log in to your account: enter your PayPal credentials.
  • 3. Select your funding source: PayPal balance, bank account, or linked credit card.
  • 4. Confirm the payment: PayPal authorizes the transaction and the merchant receives confirmation.
  • 5. Transaction completed: the merchant ships the order. PayPal may temporarily hold the funds before releasing them.

Sending Money to a Friend or Family Member

To send money to a friend or family member, use the « Send and Request » feature. Enter the recipient’s email address or phone number, the amount, and choose your funding source. The transfer is instant between two PayPal accounts.

Two options exist: « Friends and Family » (personal transfer) or « Goods and Services » (purchase). The distinction is important because buyer protection does not apply to personal transfers.

PayPal Fees in Canada

Creating a PayPal account is free. However, certain transactions incur fees. Here are the details.

Fees for Individuals

Commercial transaction from the United States2.90% + $0.30 CAD + 0.80%
International commercial transaction (outside US)2.90% + $0.30 CAD + 1.00%
Micropayment Canada or US5.00% + $0.05 CAD/USD

Currency Conversion Fees

PayPal applies a marked-up exchange rate when a transaction involves currency conversion. For sending and receiving money, the markup is 4% of the amount. For other conversions (purchases, withdrawals), it is 3%. These fees are in addition to the base transaction fees.

If you frequently make payments in foreign currencies, a credit card with no foreign transaction fees can save you money. Also consult our comparison of the best cards with no foreign transaction fees to find the best option.

PayPal Transfer Times

Transfer times vary depending on the type of transfer:

Transfer TypeDuration
PayPal to PayPalInstant
Bank account to PayPal3 to 5 business days
PayPal withdrawal to bank account1 to 3 business days

Withdrawal times depend on your financial institution. However, most major Canadian banks process PayPal transfers in 1 to 2 business days.

Buyer Protection

PayPal’s Purchase Protection program covers two situations: the ordered item never arrived, or the item received is significantly different from the description. To benefit from this protection, the payment must be listed as a « Goods and Services » purchase.

Protection is not automatic. Each case is evaluated individually by PayPal. In other words, paying via PayPal does not guarantee a systematic refund.

Resolution Center

If a problem occurs with a purchase, you can open a dispute in PayPal’s Resolution Center. You have 30 days after delivery or 180 days after payment (whichever comes first) to report a problem.

PayPal then requests evidence from both parties (buyer and seller) and makes its decision. The process typically takes a few days to a few weeks depending on the complexity of the case.

Seller Protection

PayPal also offers protection to sellers in two cases: unauthorized transactions and claims for items not received. To benefit from it, the seller must keep proof of shipment and delivery (tracking number, delivery confirmation).

This protection does not apply to all sales. PayPal evaluates each claim on a case-by-case basis. Digital items and in-person services are generally excluded.

Advantages of PayPal Canada

  • Accepted almost everywhere: thousands of online merchants in Canada and abroad accept PayPal (Walmart, eBay, Airbnb, Netflix, etc.).
  • Protected banking information: the merchant never sees your credit card number or banking details.
  • Free domestic transfers: sending money to a friend or family member in Canada costs nothing via your PayPal balance or bank account.
  • Buyer protection: a dispute resolution program helps you recover your money if an item does not arrive or does not match the description.
  • Compatible with major banks: PayPal works with bank accounts and credit cards from major Canadian institutions.

Disadvantages of PayPal Canada

  • High conversion fees: the 3 to 4% markup on the exchange rate makes international transactions expensive.
  • Inactivity fees: an account unused for 12 months incurs fees of $20 CAD per year.
  • Conditional protection: Purchase Protection does not cover all transactions. « Friends and Family » payments are excluded.
  • Withdrawal in CAD only: you cannot withdraw funds in USD to a Canadian bank account. PayPal automatically converts to CAD with its own fees.
  • Possible account freezes: PayPal may temporarily freeze funds or limit an account in case of suspected fraud, sometimes without clear notice.

Where to Use PayPal in Canada

Many Canadian and international merchants accept PayPal:

  • Major online retailers: Walmart Canada, Amazon, Best Buy, Canadian Tire
  • Commerce platforms: eBay, Etsy, AliExpress
  • Subscription services: Netflix, Spotify, Adobe, PlayStation Store
  • Travel and accommodation: Airbnb, certain airlines
  • Peer-to-peer payments: reimbursements between friends, donations, service payments

PayPal is also used by self-employed workers and freelancers to receive payments from clients in Canada and abroad.

How to Reduce PayPal Fees

A few strategies can help limit costs related to PayPal:

  • Use your bank account as the source: personal transfers in Canada funded by bank account or PayPal balance are free.
  • Avoid PayPal currency conversion: if possible, pay in Canadian dollars to avoid the 3 to 4% markup.
  • Pay with a card with no foreign transaction fees: certain credit cards for foreign currencies do not apply any conversion fees. You can then pay directly with the card rather than via PayPal for international purchases.
  • Close unused accounts: to avoid the $20 CAD annual inactivity fee.

To compare your payment options, consult our credit card comparator. Some cards offer cash back on all purchases, including those made via PayPal.

Alternatives to PayPal in Canada

PayPal is not the only option for sending money or paying online in Canada. Here are some alternatives:

  • Interac e-Transfer: the Canadian standard for peer-to-peer transfers. Free at most major banks, fast (often instant), and accepted by all Canadian financial institutions.
  • Wise (formerly TransferWise): ideal for international transfers. Wise uses the interbank exchange rate (without markup) and displays transparent fees. Relevant if you frequently send money abroad.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: for online and in-store purchases. These services use your existing credit or debit cards and offer an additional layer of security through tokenization.

Bottom Line

PayPal Canada remains a convenient tool for paying online and sending money. Domestic peer-to-peer transfers are free, buyer protection offers a safety net, and the platform is accepted by thousands of merchants.

However, fees accumulate for international transactions and currency conversion. If you frequently pay in foreign currencies, a card with no foreign transaction fees or a service like Wise can save you money.

PayPal Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Is PayPal free in Canada?

Creating a PayPal account is free. Online purchases in Canadian dollars and personal transfers in Canada (via balance or bank account) are also free. However, PayPal charges fees for international transfers, credit card payments, and currency conversion.

How do I create a PayPal account in Canada?

Go to the PayPal Canada website or download the mobile app. Choose a personal or business account, enter your information (name, email, phone), and link a bank account or credit card. Bank account verification takes 2 to 3 business days.

Can I use PayPal without a bank account in Canada?

Yes, you can link a credit card instead of a bank account. However, some features remain limited. Without a bank account, you cannot fully verify your account, which reduces your sending limits. Withdrawals are also more restrictive.

What are PayPal’s currency conversion fees?

PayPal applies a 4% markup on the exchange rate for sending and receiving money, and 3% for other conversions (purchases, withdrawals). These fees are in addition to the base transaction fees. To reduce these costs, you can use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees.

Does PayPal work between Canada and the United States?

Yes. You can send and receive money between Canada and the United States via PayPal. The transfer costs $2.99 CAD (via balance or bank account). Currency conversion fees are added if the amount is converted from USD to CAD or vice versa.

What is the difference between Friends and Family and Goods and Services?

« Friends and Family » is for personal transfers (reimbursements, gifts). « Goods and Services » applies to purchases. The distinction is important: PayPal’s buyer protection only covers « Goods and Services » payments. « Friends and Family » transfers are not protected in case of a dispute.

Is PayPal safe in Canada?

PayPal uses data encryption and two-factor authentication to protect transactions. Each payment requires your approval. The platform also offers protection against unauthorized transactions. That said, for large international amounts, a direct bank transfer may offer additional security.

How do I contact PayPal Canada customer service?

You can reach PayPal Canada by phone or chat via the online Help Center (paypal.com/ca/smarthelp/contact-us). The Resolution Center also allows you to report a problem related to a transaction. PayPal also has a community forum for general questions.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.
