My trip to Thailand ended in Bangkok, where I attended Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2023, an event for tourism professionals where Milesopedia was invited as media.

SO/Bangkok was one of the event’s partner hotels, hosting us for four nights. This hotel is part of the SO/ banner, which belongs to Sofitel. This collection of eight hotels around the world is rooted in the world of fashion, and stands out for its design and avant-garde approach to luxury.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 01

Inspired by the four elements, this hotel offers an eclectic urban decor created by Thai designers and the famous fashion designer Christian Lacroix.

Milesopedia was invited to stay at this establishment as part of a trip organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in Toronto. No remuneration was received for the realization of this review. The opinions remain mine and were not influenced in any way.

SO/ Bangkok – Booking

During high season, January 2024 in this example, the price of a SO Cozy room ranges between $200 and $250 per night. Accor ALL program members benefit from a preferential rate.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO bangkok simulation

If you wish to include breakfast (which is definitely worth it), the price increases to $254 for one night.

It is also possible to book through platforms like Expedia, Booking.com, and Agoda. By participating in their rewards programs, you can obtain status giving access to advantageous prices. You can also combine this with a travel credit card. For example, you could book with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card to avoid the 2.5% foreign currency conversion fees. By booking via the Expedia site dedicated to Scene+, you can earn or redeem your points for your bookings to save.

Earn Accor ALL points

By staying at SO/ Bangkok, you can earn Accor ALL points and possibly bonus points if you are registered and travel during the promotion period. Since July 22, 2026, there is now a Canadian card that transfers to Accor: the American Express Platinum Card®, at a ratio of 2 Membership Rewards points for 1 Reward point (minimum transfer of 1,000 points). A SO Cozy room at SO/ Bangkok costs around $200 to $250 per night in high season, and a reserve of points already accumulated on the Platinum Card can now cover part of the bill. Amex has also confirmed that these cardholders, including business versions, will automatically receive Gold ALL status later in 2026, with free Wi-Fi, welcome amenities, late checkout, and upgrades subject to availability. You can also use your points for free nights, or transfer them to other loyalty programs like Aeroplan. Our dedicated article details all the conditions of this new partnership.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 50

SO/ Bangkok – Location

The hotel is ideally located facing the large Lumpini Park, very close to Bangkok’s financial district and Chinatown, a few minutes’ walk from the MRT Lumphini metro station and the Sala Daeng BTS skytrain. The city of Bangkok is very well served by public transportation, and you can also take a tuk-tuk or book a Grab (the equivalent of Uber) to get around by car or motorcycle and scooter. Note that there is a lot of traffic in Bangkok, which is why the metro is sometimes a better alternative.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 58

SO/ Bangkok – Check-in

Upon arrival at the hotel, you need to go up a few floors to reach the lobby and reception where check-in takes place. You immediately notice that each space in the hotel displays its own identity, and the same is true with the staff dressed in traditional Thai outfits that are both sophisticated and different from one another.

During the check-in process, we were able to wait on the many couches that furnish the room. Behind us, a bar has been set up, and the glass wall already offers a beautiful view of Bangkok.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 03

SO/ Bangkok – Room

Each room is represented by one of the four elements at SO/Bangkok, offering eclectic decor for all tastes. My room category was the SO Cozy and exists in three versions associated with the elements: metal, wood, and earth. As you can guess, my element was wood, much to my delight.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 04

Spacious, the room offers a large window with a stunning view of Bangkok and Lumpini Park. It is furnished with a very large bed, a flat-screen television, a desk area and a sitting area with a small sofa, a mini-fridge, and a closet. You’ll find the usual necessary accessories for a five-star hotel: bathrobe, iron and ironing board, coffee machine with capsules, safe, etc.

Although very well decorated, the furniture has had a long life, with a few minor signs of wear.

Covered in marble, the bathroom is large and divided into several sections with a Japanese toilet, shower and bathtub. Toiletries and bath salts are available in dispensers.

As a welcome gift, I received a bracelet as well as treats.

SO/ Bangkok – Dining

Breakfast

Having had lunch at several excellent luxury hotel buffets during my trip to Thailand, I have to say that the one at the SO/Bangkok stood out for its quality and variety. Asian, American and European food was served. A barista was on hand to serve coffee to taste, and it was the same for the eggs, which we could get to taste.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 33

From pastries and viennoiseries to cold cuts, cheeses, fruits, and coconuts; every imaginable option for breakfast was offered. Here’s a glimpse:

What impressed me most about this buffet was the healthy options available: smoothie bar, gluten-free options, and much more.

Hotel Restaurants

SO/ Bangkok does not lack on-site dining options. Here they are:

  • Red Oven: Breakfast buffet and international menu for lunch and dinner
  • Soshi: Japanese cuisine and sushi
Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 40
  • Mixo: Bar and afternoon tea service on the 9th floor, where we checked in
Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 02
  • The Water Club: poolside bar hosting a pool party every first Saturday of the month
  • Chocolab: Space hosting chocolate-making workshops on the hotel’s ground floor

Roof terraces

Bangkok is renowned for its numerous rooftop bars and terraces that offer panoramic views of the city. With its two rooftop bars, SO/ Bangkok has nothing to envy other terraces. I visited HI-SO on the 29th floor to sip a cocktail and admire the view at sunset. The mixology menu was very interesting with its original cocktails inspired by astrological signs. You have to pay around $15-20 for a cocktail, but the view was worth it:

In the evening, the bar transforms into a nightclub for partying. It’s possible to move upstairs to the Cassette Music Lounge, where the décor and menu change with more food options.

SO/ Bangkok – Other services

SO/ Bangkok – Swimming pool

To cool off during very hot days in Bangkok, SO/ Bangkok offers an infinity pool on the 10th floor with panoramic views of Bangkok and Lumpini Park. 32 meters long, the pool is located on the same floor as the spa and fitness center.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 63

There are sun loungers and a bar service with plenty of places to sit.

SO/ Bangkok – Lounge

Located on the 25th floor, the Club Signature lounge is accessible for 1,700 baht (approximately $65 CAD), for Platinum members of the Accor ALL program and for guests who have booked one of these rooms: SO Club, SO Studio, SO Suite, SO Lofty, and SO VIP Duplex Suite. Access was not included in my reservation but I was still able to quickly visit the lounge, which offers a terrace with a view and a space with unique decor, as shown in these photos:

In the middle of the afternoon, a buffet with bites, snacks and drinks was available. Here is an overview:

SO/ Bangkok – Fitness room

Adjacent to the pool, the fitness center offers everything you need to stay in shape during a stay at SO/ Bangkok, with cardio machines, free weights, and much more.

SO/ Bangkok – Spa

On the same floor is the SO/ Bangkok’s luxurious, multi-award-winning spa. I haven’t had a chance to try it out, but you can find the treatment menu here.

Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 71
Review: SO/ Bangkok | Accor ALL - SO Bangkok 72

SO/ Bangkok – My overall impression

My experience at SO/ Bangkok went very well. This very trendy five-star hotel is definitely a place that attracts an international clientele. I recommend it to business travelers, solo travelers, and couples who want to experience a refined and trendy experience in Bangkok. The service was attentive, the food excellent, and the hotel offers a very comprehensive range of services and facilities.

My stay at SO/ Bangkok was different from my previous stay in Bangkok at The Sukhothai Hotel, which mainly paid tribute to Thai culture. I appreciated both hotels for different reasons; SO/ Bangkok offers you sophisticated urban luxury while The Sukhothai offers you luxury more focused on relaxation and Thai culture.

The American Express Cobalt® Card is the best credit card from American Express, whether you want points for travel or cash back.

American Express Cobalt® Card welcome offer

The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer we value at $255.

Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.

You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.

You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:

  • 15,000 Aeroplan points
  • 15,000 Avios points
  • 15,000 Flying Blue Miles
  • 18,000 Marriott Bonvoy points

If hotel points are what you are after, our ultimate guide to Marriott Bonvoy and our complete map of Marriott Bonvoy hotels by category show what those points can actually buy.

American Express Cobalt® Card benefits

Here is what the card gives you, starting with the benefits cardholders use most.

  • 5X points on eligible eats and drinks in Canada: groceries, restaurants and bars, home food delivery and convenience stores. A spend cap applies.
  • 3X points on eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada.
  • 2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
  • 1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.
  • 1X point per dollar on everything else, with no category restrictions.
  • Points that hold the same value either way: 1,000 points = $10 as a statement credit, or a 1:1 transfer to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
  • No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
  • Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
  • The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
  • Front Of The Line® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
  • A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.

To see how it compares with the rest of the line-up, read our round-up of the best credit cards from American Express in Canada.

The 5X categories and where they apply

The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers four kinds of merchants:

  • Groceries: Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, Safeway, Whole Foods.
  • Restaurants and bars: sit-down meals, takeout and drinks.
  • Home food delivery.
  • Convenience stores: Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven.

The 2X rate covers gas stations such as Esso, Shell and Petro-Canada, along with public transit and ride sharing.

With the American Express Cobalt® Card, you earn between 1 and 5 points per dollar:

Category Points per dollar
Grocery (Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, etc.) 5
Home food delivery 5
Restaurants and bars 5
Convenience stores 5
Streaming services 3
Service station 2
Transport 2
Travel 1
Other 1

That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.

You can also stack these categories with the hundreds of stores that offer 5x points.

American Express Cobalt® Card insurance coverage

The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.

Travel insurance

  • Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
  • Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
  • Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
  • Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
  • Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
  • Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.

Rental car insurance

Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.

Mobile device insurance

Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.

Purchase protection and extended warranty

Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.

American Express Cobalt® Card fees

  • Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.
  • Additional cards: $0.
  • Purchase interest rate: 21.99%.
  • Cash advance interest rate: 21.99%.
  • Foreign transaction fee: 2.5%.
  • Minimum income required: none.

Because the fee is billed monthly rather than in one annual charge, you can stop and restart the cost in step with how much you are actually using the card.
