Flying Lufthansa: cabins and points from Canada

Flying Lufthansa from Canada means comparing the route, the cabin scheduled for your flight, and the full ticket cost. Frankfurt and Munich offer connections across Europe and beyond, but an aircraft change or connecting flight can change your onboard experience.

This guide covers Lufthansa as an airline. Our Miles & More program guide covers the loyalty program. Information and official sources checked on October 28, 2026.

Plan your next trip with our LOT Polish Airlines guide from Canada: routes, cabins, baggage and options for booking with points.

Flying from Canada with Lufthansa

Start by searching from Montréal-Trudeau (YUL), Toronto Pearson (YYZ), or Vancouver (YVR), then compare routes through Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). The flights marketed on Lufthansa’s Canadian website also include partner flights. A city appearing in the search engine does not prove that Lufthansa operates a nonstop flight from it.

Read the operating airline for every segment. Lufthansa belongs to the Lufthansa Group, which also includes SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. These airlines have their own aircraft and services. Buying a ticket on lufthansa.com does not guarantee a Lufthansa cabin throughout your trip.

Before choosing, compare:

Departure: the journey from home and the cost of any positioning flight.
Connection: airports, terminals, checks, and the time between flights.
Ticket: one booking through to your destination or separate tickets, which carry different connection risks.

To compare an itinerary operated by the Canadian airline, read our Air Canada hub.

Lufthansa cabins: check the product on your flight

On long-haul flights, compare Economy, Premium Economy, Business Class, and First Class where offered. The cabin on your onward European flight may be quite different. An itinerary sold as Business Class can also include a segment in another cabin, so check each flight.

Allegris: the aircraft type is only a starting point

Lufthansa Allegris is a range of cabins being introduced on selected aircraft. Lufthansa A350s and Boeing 787s do not all necessarily offer the same product. First Class is not available on every aircraft equipped with Allegris.

The official Allegris destination list separates seasons and departures from Munich and Frankfurt. It includes Vancouver from Frankfurt in its winter 2026-2027 schedule, subject to change. A listed destination does not guarantee Allegris on every frequency or in another season.

Allegris Business Class has several seat categories. The Business Suite, Privacy Seat, Extra Space Seat, and Extra Long Bed may cost extra. Check your seat map and the advance seat reservation price for your fare, including when booking with points. Check again after a schedule or aircraft change.

Our Allegris A350-900 Business Class review from Munich to Montréal, published in September 2024, describes the flight tested at that time. Its photos help explain the seat, but its fare and aircraft are not a promise for your booking.

Baggage and fare rules: compare the full cost

Lufthansa’s baggage allowance depends on your route, cabin, fare, and status. Use the airline’s calculator and check the allowance on your ticket. Do not apply long-haul rules automatically to a separately purchased European ticket.

For long-haul flights, the carry-on baggage page lists one carry-on in Economy and Premium Economy and 2 in Business and First, each up to 8 kg and 55 × 40 × 23 cm, plus the permitted personal item. Exceptions can apply, including operating-airline rules and local security requirements. Short- and medium-haul Economy Basic follows different rules.

Add the baggage and seat selection you need to the advertised fare. Compare change rules, any fare difference, and refund conditions. An Aeroplan credit card does not automatically provide a free checked bag on a Lufthansa-operated flight. Air Canada card benefits have their own conditions.

Connections and lounges in Frankfurt or Munich

Check the airport and terminal for each flight, the time needed for checks, and the formalities for your itinerary. A short connection leaves less room when travelling with children, reduced mobility, or a terminal change. With separate tickets, also check baggage collection and re-check requirements.

Lufthansa lounge access depends on an eligible cabin or status and boarding pass. Business, Senator, and First Class lounges have different rules. Premium Economy alone does not guarantee access. Check guest and arrival rules too. Holding a credit card does not by itself establish access to a Lufthansa lounge.

Booking Lufthansa with Miles & More or Aeroplan

Compare the same itinerary in both programs before moving points.

Miles & More: Lufthansa award flights use variable mileage amounts shown during the search. Review taxes, fees, and surcharges separately. An old award chart cannot establish the current price of a Lufthansa flight.
Aeroplan: Lufthansa is listed among Air Canada’s airline partners. Search on Air Canada using points, then check the operating airline, cabin on each segment, and full amount due.
Availability: a seat sold for cash or offered in Miles & More may be unavailable through Aeroplan. Do not count on Allegris, Business Class, or First Class on a given date without a bookable search result.

Our Aeroplan program guide explains the program rules. Aeroplan points and Miles & More miles are separate currencies; you cannot move a balance from one to the other. Check availability and the final price in your chosen program’s booking engine.

Our historical Miles & More article, published in December 2023, provides context on the program’s development. Check the program page and official sources for current rules.

Cobalt: transferable points for Aeroplan

The American Express Cobalt Card earns Membership Rewards points. The Canadian American Express program lists a transfer of 1,000 Membership Rewards points to 1,000 Aeroplan points. This route supports booking Lufthansa seats available in Aeroplan. The Canadian partner list checked does not offer a direct transfer to Miles & More; do not apply US or European card options to Canada.

Welcome offerGet 1,250 points after $750 in purchases per month for 12 months: Up to 15,000 points

The American Express Cobalt^® Card is a versatile American Express card, whether you want points for travel or cash back.

American Express Cobalt^® Card welcome offer

The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer valued at $255.

Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.

You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.

You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:

15,000 Aeroplan points
15,000 Avios points
15,000 Flying Blue Miles
18,000 Marriott Bonvoy points

American Express Cobalt^® Card benefits

Here is what the card gives you, starting with the benefits cardholders use most.

5X points on eligible eats and drinks in Canada: groceries, restaurants and bars, and home food delivery. A spend cap applies.
3X points on eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada.
2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.
1X point per dollar on everything else, with no category restrictions.
Points that hold the same value either way: 1,000 points = $10 as a statement credit, or a 1:1 transfer to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
Front Of The Line^® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.

The 5X categories and where they apply

The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers three kinds of merchants:

Groceries: Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, Safeway, Whole Foods.
Restaurants and bars: sit-down meals, takeout and drinks.
Home food delivery.
Convenience stores (Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven): not part of 5X, 1 point per dollar.

The 2X rate covers gas stations such as Esso, Shell and Petro-Canada, along with public transit and ride sharing.

With the American Express Cobalt^® Card, you earn between 1 and 5 points per dollar:

Category	Points per dollar
Grocery (Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, etc.)	5
Home food delivery	5
Restaurants and bars	5
Convenience stores	1
Streaming services	3
Service station	2
Transport	2
Travel	1
Other	1

That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.

You can also stack these categories with the hundreds of stores that offer 5x points.

American Express Cobalt^® Card insurance coverage

The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.

Travel insurance

Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.

Rental car insurance

Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.

Mobile device insurance

Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.

Purchase protection and extended warranty

Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.

American Express Cobalt^® Card fees

Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.
Additional cards: $0.
Purchase interest rate: 21.99%.
Cash advance interest rate: 21.99%.
Foreign transaction fee: 2.5%.
Minimum income required: none.

Because the fee is billed monthly rather than in one annual charge, you can stop and restart the cost in step with how much you are actually using the card.

Buying Aeroplan points or adding Miles & More miles

If a Lufthansa award is available in Aeroplan and you are short of points, our affiliate link to buy Aeroplan points lets you check the applicable offer. Milesopedia may receive a commission. This purchase funds Aeroplan and does not credit Miles & More miles.

For Miles & More, the official help page distinguishes direct mileage purchases from Bundle&Go, which it links to for earning miles with travel offers. Review bundles and conditions in your account. The price, included miles, and any bonus are those shown in your account at the time of purchase.

Before any transaction, compare:

The cost of missing points: billing currency, exchange rate, card fees, and minimum purchase amount.
The award’s cash cost: taxes, surcharges, booking fees, and any seat selection.
Timing and conditions: points posting, availability while waiting, changes, and cancellation.

Compare the total with a cash ticket. Buying or transferring points does not hold a seat. If no suitable award is available, keep your points and compare other dates or a paid ticket.

Read the Milesopedia newsletter for more advice and compare the best credit cards in Canada for your needs.

Are Lufthansa and Miles & More the same thing?

Lufthansa is an airline. Miles & More is a loyalty program used by several airlines. Check cabins, baggage, and services with the airline operating each flight.

How can I tell whether my Lufthansa flight has Allegris?

Check the official destinations, then the flight details and seat map for your travel date. The A350 or Boeing 787 name alone is insufficient. Check again after an aircraft change.

Can I book Lufthansa with Aeroplan points?

Lufthansa is an Aeroplan partner. You can book seats made available to the program, as shown in search results. A seat sold for cash or offered through Miles & More may be absent from Aeroplan.

Can Canadian Membership Rewards points transfer to Miles & More?

The Canadian American Express partner list checked does not offer a direct transfer to Miles & More. It lists 1,000 Membership Rewards points to 1,000 Aeroplan points. Find a seat before transferring.

Is baggage included with every Lufthansa ticket?

Your allowance depends on route, cabin, fare, and status. Check Lufthansa’s calculator and your ticket, including the rules of airlines operating connecting flights. An Aeroplan card does not guarantee a free bag on Lufthansa.

Does Premium Economy include Lufthansa lounge access?

Premium Economy alone does not guarantee access. Eligibility depends on the lounge, status, boarding pass, and other applicable conditions. Business, Senator, and First Class lounges have different rules.

Should I buy points before searching for a flight?

Find a suitable award first and compare the full cost with a cash ticket. Buying Aeroplan points funds Aeroplan. Bundle&Go concerns Miles & More. No purchase or transfer holds a seat while points are being credited.
