Flying with Air Canada: plan your trip
Loading article…
Booking an Air Canada flight involves more than comparing the displayed price. The operating carrier on each segment, fare, cabin and connection time all shape your trip. This guide brings together the checks to make before paying and the reading that will help you prepare for departure.
For earning or redeeming points, understanding status and choosing a card linked to the program, use our Aeroplan guide. That page covers loyalty rules; the advice below focuses on flying with Air Canada.
Before booking: five checks
- Compare the total cost for everyone, including the bags, seats and services you need.
- Read the operating carrier’s name on every segment, including itineraries sold by Air Canada.
- Check the cabin and seat map on each flight, rather than only the longest leg.
- Review connection time, airport departure areas and the formalities along the way.
- Keep the chosen fare conditions: changes, refunds, baggage and any lounge access.
A more convenient schedule can be worth more than a small fare difference. For a family trip, a time-sensitive event or travel from another city, also compare the number of connections and any hotel nights you will need.
Air Canada, Rouge, Express and partner flights
Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and flights under the Air Canada Express banner do not necessarily offer the same aircraft or cabin. A marketing flight number alone does not identify the onboard product. Check the “operated by” information and each segment’s details when booking.
The fleet is changing: Air Canada has announced a renewal of Rouge and Express aircraft. An upgrade announcement does not establish that your particular aircraft has already been fitted. The seat map and booking details are more useful than a general fleet promise.
If a partner airline is involved, check its check-in procedures and the baggage conditions too. The seller’s name alone does not establish every rule that applies.
Choose the fare that fits your needs
Cabin and fare are separate choices. The cabin describes features such as the seat and onboard space; the fare family sets commercial conditions. Two tickets in the same cabin can therefore offer different flexibility.
In the official fare comparison, focus on change fees, any fare difference payable when changing flights, refundability and seat selection. Read the conditions displayed for your itinerary and ticketing date before deciding that a higher fare is worthwhile.
Our guide to Air Canada fare classes explains the comparison method. Fare names and benefits in an older example do not replace the conditions of your new ticket.
Baggage: do not assume a carry-on is included
The official carry-on rules distinguish a personal item from a standard carry-on bag. For Economy Basic tickets bought from January 3, 2025, some itineraries include only a personal item, including travel within Canada and to the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. An onward international connection can affect the allowance; check the complete trip.
For dimensions and exceptions, read our Air Canada baggage guide. For checked bags, use the official baggage calculator with your itinerary, fare and eligible benefits. Before buying an extra bag, check whether an existing benefit covers it and which travellers qualify.
Economy, Premium Economy or Signature Class?
In Economy, start with the seat map and the options actually available on your flight. A Preferred seat in Economy does not turn the booking into Premium Economy.
Premium Economy is a separate product with a larger seat and priority airport services. It may suit travellers looking for more room without moving to Business Class. It is not offered on every aircraft.
Signature Class has a seat that converts into a fully flat bed. Do not infer that product from the word “Business” alone: check the aircraft, seat map and every flight in the itinerary. An aircraft substitution can also change the product.
For specific experiences, read our dated reviews:
- Boeing 787-8 Business Class, Toronto–Vienna, May 2024.
- Airbus A330-300 Premium Economy, Montreal–Nice, October 2024.
These reports describe flights taken on particular dates. Their seats, meals, schedules and points prices are not guarantees for a current booking.
Connecting in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver
Minimum connection times depend on the airport, origin, destination and carriers. They establish whether a combination can be booked; they do not guarantee a wait-free transfer.
Before choosing a short connection, identify security checks, border formalities and any changes between airport areas. If you are travelling on separate tickets, ask the carriers about baggage transfer and what happens to the second ticket if your first flight is late. Allow time for those steps rather than applying a single-ticket minimum to separate bookings.
Maple Leaf Lounges, Cafés and Signature Suites
Check which lounge is in your departure area and what makes you eligible. A ticket, status or card can provide different access depending on the location and flight. Our Maple Leaf Lounge access guide complements the official conditions.
Access to a Signature Suite follows separate conditions. An upgrade or Business Class ticket does not, by itself, establish eligibility for the Suite.
Checked on October 26, 2026: Air Canada announces a temporary closure of the Toronto Signature Suite from September 30, 2026, for approximately two months. Check the official notice before travelling; this guide does not promise a firm reopening date.
For a lounge example, read our Montreal domestic lounge review from June 2026. Recheck access and opening hours for your own departure.
Book with points and choose a card
For an Air Canada flight, search for availability with Aeroplan points and compare the total, including taxes and fees, with the cash fare. Points prices and availability vary by trip; detailed pricing rules remain in the Aeroplan guide.
The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card earns Aeroplan points directly. The American Express Cobalt Card offers another path through Membership Rewards points transferable to Aeroplan. Compare fees, spending requirements, and benefits that matter for your itinerary. Check reward availability before transferring points.

Prepare for departure and choose your next guide
Review the check-in and boarding deadlines for your journey. Online check-in opening 24 hours before departure is different from the recommended airport arrival time. Keep travel documents, your boarding pass and booking conditions accessible.
To compare options to Europe, our Air France–KLM hub for departures from Canada follows the same practical approach. To decide how to pay for the trip, return to the Aeroplan guide and the points or cash calculator.
Official sources checked on October 26, 2026. Recheck your booking’s conditions before purchase and departure. Linked reviews retain their historical context.
Should you buy points or Miles?
You can view Aeroplan points purchases through our affiliate link. The store requires an Aeroplan account login. Check the final price, currency, taxes, limits, and displayed conditions. Buying points can top up a balance for a specific booking; it does not hold the flight or its price.
Compare the cost of missing points, plus the award ticket’s taxes and charges, with the full cash fare. Include posting time and any card currency conversion fees. Our guide to buying Aeroplan points explains the method; confirm the store’s current promotion rather than relying on an old bonus. This affiliate link may pay us a commission, without changing our analysis.
Questions before you book
For a trip to New Zealand, also see our Air New Zealand guide. It distinguishes the airline’s cabins, its Koru program and partner-award searches through Aeroplan.
Are Air Canada and Aeroplan the same thing?
Air Canada is an airline. Aeroplan is its loyalty program. Use this hub to plan your flight and the Aeroplan guide for earning, redeeming points, status and cards linked to the program.
Does Economy Basic include a carry-on bag?
Not on every itinerary. For tickets bought from January 3, 2025, some trips include only a personal item. An onward international connection can affect that allowance. Check the complete journey’s conditions and applicable exceptions before buying.
Does every Business Class flight have a lie-flat seat?
No. Signature Class has a fully flat seat, but the word “Business” does not guarantee that product on every flight. Check the cabin, seat map and aircraft for each segment.
Does Premium Economy automatically include lounge access?
Do not assume that access is included. Check your fare, eligible benefits and the lounge conditions for your departure area. Signature Suite access follows separate rules.
How much time should I allow for an Air Canada connection?
There is no single connection time. The minimum varies by airport, origin, destination and carriers. Check the formalities along the way and allow an appropriate buffer, especially on separate tickets or when baggage transfer needs arranging.
Is the Toronto Signature Suite open?
As checked on October 26, 2026, Air Canada announces a temporary closure from September 30, 2026, for approximately two months. Check the official notice before departure; the estimated duration is not a firm reopening date.
