The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

What is Series by Marriott?

Series by Marriott is a midscale collection brand. Rather than building hotels from scratch, Marriott converts existing independent properties and brings them into the Marriott Bonvoy network. Hotels keep their local identity while benefiting from Marriott’s distribution system and loyalty program.

In under a year, the brand has opened 37 properties in India and made its US debut with hotels in Miami Beach and Santa Monica. More openings are planned in Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, and Santa Barbara.

Canada is also part of the plan. Marriott has signed 13 agreements to bring Series to the Canadian market in 2025, and two properties are already open.

The European Expansion in Detail

The 11 new European agreements are split between two separate partnerships:

CountryPartnerNumber of hotelsLocations
United KingdomSplendid Hospitality Group5Earls Court, Euston, and Kings Cross (London) + regional locations
ItalyAmapa Group6Montesilvano, Peschici, Pomezia, Rimini, Valmontone, Venice

In Italy, five existing properties from the Amapa Group will be converted under the Series by Marriott banner. A new hotel will also be built in Valmontone. In the United Kingdom, the five hotels from the Splendid Hospitality Group are located in popular London neighbourhoods and other strategic regional locations.

No specific opening dates have been announced for the European properties. Conversions of existing properties typically move faster than new builds.

Marriott Bonvoy Points at Series Hotels

Series by Marriott hotels are an integral part of the Marriott Bonvoy program. You earn and redeem points the same way as at any other property in the network.

Earning Rate

Stays at Series by Marriott hotels earn 5 points per US dollar spent on eligible charges. That’s half the standard rate of 10 points applied across most Marriott brands like Sheraton, Westin, and Marriott Hotels. Series sits alongside brands like Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, and Element in the reduced-rate category.

The 5-points-per-dollar rate applies to Series by Marriott, versus 10 points at most standard Marriott brands. If your goal is to build Bonvoy points quickly, a traditional Sheraton or Marriott remains more rewarding per night.

Reduced Elite Night Credits

Potentially Affordable Point Redemptions

As a midscale brand, Series hotels should rank among the lowest point rates in the Bonvoy network. If the European properties follow a model similar to Four Points Flex by Sheraton, they could offer some of the cheapest free nights in cities like London and Venice. For Canadian members who accumulate points through the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card, this is worth watching.

Current welcome offers on Marriott Bonvoy American Express cards can also help you build your balance faster before these properties open.

Marriott’s Midscale Strategy in Europe

The arrival of Series by Marriott in Europe extends Marriott’s push into the midscale segment. The chain entered Europe’s midscale market in 2023 with the launch of Four Points Flex by Sheraton, which now counts 40 open properties with over 4,500 rooms across seven markets.

Marriott is also expanding StudioRes, a midscale extended-stay brand launched in the US that is drawing interest from European developers.

In total, Marriott International has more than 30 brands and nearly 9,100 properties in 142 countries. The Marriott Bonvoy program has nearly 271 million members.

What This Means for Canadian Travellers

For Canadians planning a trip to Europe with points, these new Series hotels could be some of the most affordable Marriott Bonvoy redemptions on the continent. London and Italy rank among the top destinations for Canadian travellers. Low point rates in these markets are always worth knowing about. Here’s what Series by Marriott actually delivers — and what to watch out for.

  • Point Earning: 5 Bonvoy points per dollar spent, as with other Marriott brands
  • Affordable point redemptions: The midscale positioning should offer free nights at a low cost in points.
  • Strategic central locations: Prime London neighbourhoods (Kings Cross, Euston, Earls Court) and popular Italian cities including Venice and Rimini.
  • Already in Canada: Two properties are already open in Canada, with 13 agreements signed in 2015.
  • Half Elite Night Credits: Only 0.5 credits per night, which slows progress toward elite status.
  • Limited services: Midscale hotels without the extras of a Sheraton or traditional Marriott.
  • Unknown opening dates: No precise timeline for the European properties.

Check out our best credit cards page to find the card that maximizes your Marriott Bonvoy points. Additionally, if you want to earn hotel points, the selection of the best credit cards for hotels is a good starting point.

Conclusion

Series by Marriott adds an affordable option to the Bonvoy network for budget-conscious travellers. The brand targets central locations in popular cities while offering full Bonvoy earn and redeem. For Canadian members, the upcoming European properties could become some of the most accessible point redemption options on the continent.

The trade-off is clear: the 5-points-per-dollar earn rate and half elite night credits limit the appeal for anyone focused on building or maintaining status. For travellers who prioritize value in points, this is a brand to watch.
