There’s only one way to earn HSBC Rewards points: with HSBC Rewards credit cards.

As of September 29, 2023, HSBC credit cards are no longer available in Canada, following the acquisition of HSBC Canada by RBC.

The HSBC World Elite Mastercard and the HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard allow you to earn:

6 points per dollar on all eligible travel purchases
3 points per dollar on other eligible purchases

The HSBC +Rewards Mastercard allows you to earn:

2 points per dollar on eligible food and entertainment purchases
1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases

Finally, with the HSBC Premier World Elite^® Mastercard^® and the HSBC Advance Mastercard^® , you can earn:

0.75 points per dollar on eligible purchases

Points redemptions can be done during a 60 days-period from booking and with this redemption structure:

25,000 points = $125
35,000 points = $175
45,000 points = $225

Financial rewards

If you are a HSBC Bank customer, you can redeem HSBC Rewards points to:

pay down your HSBC residential mortgage
add to your HSBC personal savings account
reduce your credit card account balance

These will not be advantageous solutions in terms of points value.

Gift cards and merchandise

Finally, like any points program, you can redeem your HSBC Rewards for 100 gifht card and merchandise options.

Frequently Asked Questions about the HSBC Rewards program

The HSBC Rewards program was one of the most internationally focused in-house programs in Canada, with airline transfer partners including Asia Miles, KrisFlyer and British Airways Executive Club. Following RBC’s acquisition of HSBC Canada in March 2024, the program no longer exists. These FAQs cover the program’s history, point values and what cardholders should know post-transition.

Does the HSBC Rewards program still exist in Canada?

No. HSBC Canada was acquired by RBC, and the transition closed on March 28, 2024. Every HSBC Rewards card has been migrated to an equivalent RBC product: the HSBC World Elite Mastercard became the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege, and other HSBC cards converted to corresponding RBC products. Cardholders received emails explaining how their existing points were converted — typically into RBC Avion Rewards at a favourable ratio. The HSBC Rewards program as it existed, with its airline transfer partners, is no longer available in Canada.

What was an HSBC Rewards point worth?

Pre-acquisition, Milesopedia valued an HSBC Rewards point at about 0.60¢. On the World Elite Mastercard, 25,000 points redeemed for $125 in travel reimbursement, 35,000 points for $175, and 45,000 points for $225. For HSBC Premier World Elite and World Elite cardholders, transfers to airline partners (Asia Miles, KrisFlyer, British Airways) could push the value up to 1.2¢ per point on strategic Asia-Pacific business-class redemptions. HSBC was one of the only Canadian programs offering direct transfers to KrisFlyer, which made it especially attractive for Asia-bound travellers and one of the best in-house value propositions of the early 2020s.

How did HSBC point transfers to airline programs work?

The HSBC World Elite Mastercard and the HSBC Premier World Elite gave access to three transfer partners: Asia Miles (Cathay Pacific), Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and British Airways Executive Club (Avios). Ratios were fixed and modest: 25,000 HSBC points typically converted to 8,000-10,000 miles depending on the partner, an effective 2.5:1 or 3:1 ratio. That sounds weak, but on high-value redemptions — Toronto-Hong Kong in Cathay Pacific business class via Asia Miles, for example — effective value could exceed 2¢ per HSBC point, one of the strongest returns available in the Canadian market at the time.

Which was the best HSBC Rewards card?

The HSBC World Elite Mastercard was considered the standout: 6 points per dollar on eligible travel purchases, 3 points per dollar on everything else, and access to all three airline transfer partners. The HSBC Premier World Elite added Premier banking benefits (private banking access, multi-currency accounts) but required a $100,000+ deposit relationship. For most consumers, the standalone World Elite delivered the best benefits-to-fee ratio. All of these cards have now been retired, replaced by their RBC Avion equivalents during the final integration that closed in March 2024.

What happened to HSBC Rewards points after the acquisition?

During the RBC transition, HSBC Rewards points were transferred into the RBC Avion Rewards program at a ratio communicated directly to clients by email and letter — typically 1:1 or very close. Cardholders also had the opportunity to spend their HSBC points before the transition date to avoid any conversion at all. Today, former HSBC clients sit inside the RBC Avion Rewards ecosystem, which offers its own transfer partners (British Airways Executive Club, Asia Miles, Cathay Pacific, etc.) and its own redemption tools. For anyone now looking for an alternative to the old HSBC program, RBC Avion Rewards has become the default replacement.

Which Canadian cards now replace HSBC Rewards?

For Canadians who valued HSBC’s international flexibility, the closest current alternatives are: the American Express Cobalt^® Card, which offers 7 transfer partners including British Airways Executive Club and Asia Miles via Cathay Pacific; the CIBC^® Aeroplan^® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card, focused on the 28 Star Alliance partners; and the Scotiabank Passport™ Visa Infinite +* Card, ideal for international travellers thanks to its zero foreign transaction fees. No current Canadian card replicates exactly the HSBC combination, but Cobalt comes closest for Asia-Pacific frequent travellers.
