A Guide to Married Flight Segments

What are Married Segments?

Married segments are two or more flights that airlines package and sell exclusively as a bundle. When flight segments are married, you’ll be able to find and book the multi-leg trip, but you won’t be able to book one or both of the individual legs on their own.

These married segment flights can be found for both cash fares and award bookings, and we’re seeing them show up more frequently than before, particularly with award bookings.

Some reasons married segments are worth knowing about are:

• Married segments have different change/cancellation rules that can complicate any adjustments to your travel plans.
• If segments are married, it will affect how award fare availability shows up in your searches.
• Understanding that married segments exist gives you additional insight into airline pricing strategies, which hopefully helps you better plan your bookings.
• Flight segments can also be married at any point before the flights occur. This means that even two flights purchased separately could potentially end up married.

How To Identify Married Segments

Unfortunately, identifying married segments is quite difficult, and there’s no way to search specifically for them or to avoid booking them. This is because the booking codes that identify if a segment is married are typically only visible to airline booking agents and select other travel agencies.

Here is how the mechanic plays out on a route Canadians book constantly:

Let’s say that you want to book a business class award fare using your Aeroplan points and searching across the entire Star Alliance network, flying from Toronto (YYZ) to Frankfurt (FRA). You search around your desired travel dates, but you don’t find any available business class seats.

Frustrated, you change your plans and decide you’ll fly to Munich (MUC) instead. You search for a business class award fare from Toronto to Munich and what do you find: business class space from Toronto to Munich via Frankfurt on the exact flights that showed no availability before.

This seeming discrepancy is because the Toronto–Frankfurt and Frankfurt–Munich segments have been (at least partially) married as a way to limit how/when these award fares are redeemed (more on this in the next section).

Perhaps most frustratingly, there’s no way to know that these segments are married other than searching alternative routes and noting patterns. Since most travellers can’t dedicate that much time or energy to searching for flights, and equally most travellers approach their redemptions with fairly fixed travel ideas/plans, spending time trying to find availability with married segments is probably not something many people will do.

What you can control is how much room you leave yourself. A larger points balance means more dates, more connecting cities and more programs to try when one route is bundled shut.

Why Do Married Segments Exist?

Married segments are one of many tools that an airline uses to control inventory and pricing. Each airline chooses which flights to marry as part of their revenue-earning strategy, and these bundled segments are reflected across all booking portals including partnered loyalty programs and relevant codeshare flights.

From the perspective of the airline, the purpose of married segments is to help them control their inventory, maximize profits, and manage the potential value of award flight redemptions. From the perspective of the traveller, married segments are mostly just a slightly confusing reality.

Airlines understand that many customers will pay more for a direct non-stop flight than for one with a connection as a matter of convenience. Using this logic, airlines will hold back award flight space on direct flights (since they’re confident that they can sell these at a good price) and instead push customers to book a connecting flight if they want to enjoy a lower fare or access a specific award seat.

Essentially the airlines are trying to make sure that all those Aeroplan points you earned with your co-branded credit cards and welcome bonuses don’t result in too much value exchanged from their end, and that they can potentially bolster patronage on their less popular routes.

Can Married Segments Be Split Up?

Now, if you’re trying to book a specific award flight and you’re coming up against the reality of married segments, you may be wondering: can married segments be split up?

Unfortunately, the answer nearly all of the time is that there’s no way to split up married segments. In very rare cases, a booking agent may be able to unmarry segments, but realistically nearly 100% of the time if you call up the airline and request to split them and/or cancel one segment, you’ll be met with either an error message disallowing this change and/or a need to reprice and rebook the segment you want to keep.

Skiplagging / Hidden City Tickets

An important concept that ties in with married segments is skiplagging also known as hidden city ticketing. Skiplagging or hidden city flights have been a known part of air travel for a number of years – ever since savvy travellers noticed that it was sometimes cheaper to book a flight through their desired destination rather than to it.

Specifically, skiplagging is when a traveller purposefully misses a leg of their itinerary because the connecting airport was actually their desired destination.

Similarly, in cases where a connecting flight with married segments is cheaper than the direct flight, it may be tempting to book the lower-cost connecting fare and then just skip the second leg of the itinerary, exiting the airport halfway through your trip in the destination you actually wanted to visit. However, this is actually a very risky move that can get you banned from an airline.

Just like with skiplagging or a “hidden city” flight, choosing to skip part of your flight on purpose is against the rules that airlines attach to their fares (known as a contract of carriage). Since an airline is a business, if it feels you’re violating its terms of sales, it can choose to ban you from purchasing a flight in the future.

Additionally, if you skip a portion of your flight, there’s no way to retrieve any luggage that you’ve checked, as it will be forwarded to the ticket’s final destination. Plus, by failing to make your full flight without explanation, any portions still scheduled in the future (like a return ticket booked on the same fare) will be cancelled.

Ultimately, this manual unmarrying of segments is probably not going to be worth the risk or hassle.

How to Work Around a Married Segment in 5 Steps

You cannot unmarry the segments, but you can change where you look. Here is the sequence to run the next time an award seat refuses to appear.

1. Confirm the pattern before you plan around it. Search the non-stop across a full week of dates. A cabin that is closed every single day, while the same seats sell for cash, points to held-back inventory rather than a full aircraft.
2. Search past your destination, through the same hub. Ask for Toronto to Munich instead of Toronto to Frankfurt. If space appears on the exact flight that showed nothing a minute earlier, the segments are bundled.
3. Price the longer itinerary before you commit. The extra leg is part of the ticket and you are expected to fly it, so compare the full points cost against your original plan and drop the idea if the detour costs more than it saves.
4. Turn the connection into a stopover. Aeroplan charges 5,000 points per stopover, one per direction of travel, for up to 45 days, in cities outside Canada and the United States. The leg you did not want becomes a second destination.
5. Widen the search before giving up. Other dates, other hubs and other programs release seats separately, so a partner may have opened the space your first search hid.

Do You Need to Care About Married Segments?

Generally speaking, you really don’t need to care much about married segments since there’s nothing you can do about them and there’s no way to use them to your advantage.

That said, it’s worth being aware of them to avoid confusion when searching for award flights. By understanding married segments even a little bit, you won’t be that surprised if you can find award availability on a multi-leg itinerary but not on single segments of the same route, or if you have a problem changing/cancelling part of a multi-leg itinerary.

Using this knowledge

Now that you have a bit of an understanding about married segments, here’s what can you do with it:

Bottom Line

Airlines use married segments to help control their inventory and revenue, particularly when it comes to award flights. For travellers this means that you may be able to find specific award availability when you search a connecting itinerary, but that you’re not able to find availability on a related non-stop flight.

Although married segments are seen more often now than before, there’s still nothing you can really do about them. That said, there’s value in knowing that they exist since it can help explain odd search results and seemingly disappearing award availability.

Knowing the mechanic will not open a seat that an airline has decided to hold back, but it does tell you where to look next: a connecting city, a stopover, or a different date. FAQs

What are airline married segments?

Married segments are two or more flights that airlines package and sell exclusively as a bundle. When flight segments are married, you’ll be able to find and book the multi-leg trip, but you won’t be able to book one or both of the individual legs on their own.

Do all airlines use married segments?

Married segments come from the revenue-management systems airlines use to control seat inventory, so the practice is widespread rather than specific to one carrier. What varies is which routes an airline chooses to bundle, and that changes over time without ever being published.

What’s the point of married segments?

Married segments are used to help airlines control their inventory, maximize profits, and manage the potential value of award flight redemptions.

What happens if I skip part of my flight on purpose?

If you skip a leg of your flight on purpose (or by accident but you don’t inform the airline), your checked luggage will be sent onward to your final destination and all future flights on that ticket (such as your return flight) will be cancelled. Additionally, if an airline feels like you are abusing the rules associated with their fares/bookings, they can choose to ban you from flying with them again.

Why does award space show on a connection but not the non-stop?

Because the airline is holding the non-stop seat back to sell it for cash, while the connecting itinerary is bundled and released as a package. The same physical flight can therefore be closed as a single leg and open as part of a longer trip.

Can I cancel just one leg of a married-segment booking?

Almost never. A request to drop one leg usually returns an error or forces the remaining segment to be repriced and rebooked at the fare available that day, which can cost far more points than the original booking.

Do married segments affect Aeroplan bookings?

Yes. Aeroplan sells award seats out of the operating carrier’s inventory, so a bundle set by Air Canada or by a Star Alliance partner shows up the same way in an Aeroplan search as it does on the airline’s own site.

Can I add a stopover to a bundled itinerary?

Often yes, and it turns the constraint into an extra destination. Aeroplan charges 5,000 points per stopover, one per direction, for up to 45 days, but only in cities outside Canada and the United States.
